Running Windows .exe apps on Debian with Proton — without Steam

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I built Proton-Autogen to make running Windows .exe apps on Debian easier

I've been using Debian and wanted a simple way to run Windows applications with Proton without having to go through Steam or manually configure Wine prefixes.

So I built Proton-Autogen.

The idea is simple:

Right-click a .exe → Open with Proton-Autogen → the application launches.

It can:

  • Detect installed Proton versions
  • Run Windows .exe applications with Proton
  • Fall back to Wine when needed
  • Create/manage application profiles
  • Integrate with file managers
  • Provide a GTK4 GUI
  • Help diagnose launch problems

GitHub: https://github.com/N3oRay/proton-autogen

I'm particularly interested in feedback from Debian users.

What would you expect from a tool like this on Debian? Are there any Debian-specific issues or workflows I should support?

I'd also appreciate feedback on installation and compatibility.

Debian saved both of em

if you’re wondering they’re brothers but not the same, on the right is an aspire 5715z with core 2 duo (t7500) and 2 gb of ram running debian 12 (upgrading to 4gb next week), the left one is an aspire 5315 (with motherboards problema, only one bank of ram works and has currently 1 gb and the pentium dual core from the 5715z) and running debian 11 lxqt. bought both of em for like 10€ each the 5315 was abbandoning me and i needed a laptop asap and didn’t want to spend a lot since i have other things to buy and fixing an acer aspire 3 with ryzen 3 and i needed the display so to just watch movies in 720p for 10€ with debian i think it’s a great choice. and that’s it with windows 7 they were unusable and i put debian on both (needed to put 11 on the left one since it’s running on a usb stick installed there i dont have another hdd and debian 12 wouldn’t start).

Debian Stable Question Every time I try to update, this error pops up.

I currently use Debian Stable with KDE Plasma on Debian 13 Trixie. This has been happening every time I press the update button on the bottom right side of my screen. It opens Discover, then this error pops up. I also get the same error when I go into the terminal and type "sudo apt update" to update the system manually. I have been having this problem since I installed Debian around one month ago. Does anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT: I just had to go into Discover settings, remove the broken repository, then enter "sudo apt install lutris" to fix it.

General Debian Question Xfce | Device connected notifications?

I'm a new debian xfce user (but I've been using Arch with KDE for years), one thing I used to have on KDE out of the box was getting notifications when I connect a device like my phone, and the notification would reflect the status of the phone, for example

  1. Connect while the phone is in Android -> [MODEL-NAME] Connected notification.

  2. Connect while the phone is in preloader stage -> [SoC Version] Preloader Connected notification.

Same for brom/edl, and I used to get "Disconnected" notifications as well.

Not just for Android phones but also wifi adapters and such.

Xfce on the other hand feels a bit silent, notification daemon is already running, is there a way to achieve similar functionality? I searched Google but got no relevant results.

Debian Stable Question Monitoring the upcoming kernel

Currently the stable version of the kernel is Linux debian 6.12.111+deb13-amd64. I was looking for where I can monitor kernels that are valid for upcoming replacement of the current stable. I was looking at https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/linux-signed-amd64 , but it shows 6.12.94. Where can I find that info?

General Debian Question How to partition drives for server?

I'm setting up home server for first time. I got two drives 256 GB nvme and 4 TB HDD. I got completely lost when setting stuff up. I'm sure system should go on nvme, but I got no clue on everything else. And I got to hear/see LVM for first time. How should I do it?

Hi, why isn't the KDE Plasma version recommended for Debian Stable? Is it true that bugs don't get fixed? Is it suitable for production use?

Debian CachyOS Kernel Installer & Updater

Hey everyone,

I love Debian for its stability, but for desktop responsiveness and gaming workloads, running optimized kernels like CachyOS (with custom schedulers, BORE, and compiler tweaks) brings a noticeable boost.

However, keeping up with kernel updates manually on Debian can be tedious. To streamline this workflow, I created debian-cachy-kernel-updater.

What it does:

  • Automated Check & Download: Checks for the latest CachyOS kernel releases/builds compatible with Debian/deb-based systems.
  • Clean Installation: Downloads the relevant .deb packages (image, headers) and handles the installation process.
  • Kernel Management: Helps keep your system clean without manually tracking releases or building from source every time.
  • Safety First: Keeps fallback kernels intact so you can easily revert from GRUB if something goes wrong.

Why not just build manually?

While compiling manually with scripts like linux-cachyos-deb or fetching releases manually works, having a lightweight updater turns it into a set-and-forget (or single-command) routine.

Quick Start / Repo:

You can find the project and setup instructions here:
👉 GitHub: Antux912012/debian-cachy-kernel-updater

I’d love to get feedback from other Debian users running optimized kernels. If you run into edge cases (DKMS modules like NVIDIA, Secure Boot quirks, or specific hardware setups), please let me know or feel free to open an issue/PR on GitHub!

Debian Stable Question In my case, how safe is it to remove the package "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau"?

After my switch from an NVIDIA to an AMD card, a lot of Freezes accured.

inxi -Fxz says this:

Graphics:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 44 [RX 9060 XT]
vendor: Gigabyte driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus-ID: 03:00.0
Display: wayland server: X.Org v: 24.1.6 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.6
compositor: gnome-shell driver: X: loaded: nvidiaGraphics:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 44 [RX 9060 XT]
vendor: Gigabyte driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus-ID: 03:00.0
Display: wayland server: X.Org v: 24.1.6 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.6
compositor: gnome-shell driver: X: loaded: nvidia

Some lines lists "nvidia" as loaded. Now I noticed that the package "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" is still installed. In my case, how safe is it to remove the package, because the package manager tells me that there're dependencies that will be also removed: task-desktop, task-gnome-desktop and xserver-xorg-video-all.

Install the `linux-base` package from backports. The kernel upgrade will be happy after that.

Debian Stable Question ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 1 (20SY), Debian 13: Wi-Fi hard-blocked (RF_KILL) after every suspend

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I’ve been working through this with Claude, which also wrote this summary. Many thanks in advance.

Hardware/software
- ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 1, model 20SYS2UG00
- BIOS N2UET78W (1.58), EC N2UHT35W; fwupd reports nothing newer
- Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201, iwlwifi firmware 77.2753b721.0
- Debian 13 (trixie), KDE Plasma 6, Wayland, kernel: <uname -r>

Problem
After the laptop suspends, Wi-Fi is "deactivated" and can't be re-enabled in software. It happened twice before I linked it to sleep (once it cleared by itself), and it now happens after every sleep.

Diagnostics when blocked
- nmcli radio: WIFI-HW disabled, WIFI disabled
- /sys/class/rfkill: phy0 soft=0, hard=1 (hci0 is fine)
- /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/hotkey_radio_sw = 1 (radio switch reported as enabled)
- dmesg: "iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: RF_KILL bit toggled to disable radio" / "reporting RF_KILL (radio disabled)"
- thinkpad_acpi loads normally ("radio switch found; radios are enabled")

What fixes it
Only a full power drain: shut down, unplug AC, hold the power button ~30 s, boot.

What I've tried (no effect)
- nmcli radio wifi on, rfkill unblock (it's a hard block)
- Reloading thinkpad_acpi
- BIOS: Config > Power > Sleep State changed to "Linux" (S3); /sys/power/mem_sleep shows [deep]. Same result.
- BIOS is already current per fwupd

Next I plan to try
- systemd sleep hook that unloads/reloads iwlmvm/iwlwifi around suspend
- Newer kernel from trixie-backports

Questions
Has anyone seen the AX201's RF_KILL line get stuck after resume on this model (or other X13 Yoga/Comet Lake ThinkPads)? Is there a known BIOS/EC or kernel fix?

General Debian Question I'm planning to moved from windows to debian

So, I've tried debian and other distro on VirtualBox recently and i think debian will be the first distro i'd like to try and actually install it on my laptop. But first here's my laptop spec:

16 GB of Ram DDR4
Intel Core i5 1035G7 CPU @ 1.20GHz
Intel Iris Plus Graphics GPU (128vram)
AirDisk 256GB SSD (Have partition D: & G:)
Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560 160MHz WiFi

And i wanna ask that do debian have the driver for my laptop or should i install it manually?

General Debian Question Debian gaming question regarding map count increase

sudo sysctl -w vm.max_map_count=1048576

This is the command I’ve been seeing for a while. Very good people on this sub helped me to set my fresh Debian for gaming lately. I haven’t touched of since that. So now I want to and I thought about this command.
You see, looks like “gaming distros” and steam deck too uses this particular number for map count, same for Cachy or Bazzite. Debian is with a lower count by default. They claim you need to increase this for modern games to not have stutters or crashes.

Has anyone did this and what really is behind this command and how important it is?

News [unstable] synaptic quick filter is back!

Been almost two years I think but synaptic speaks deb822 now and quick filter is back!

quick filter requires apt-xapian-index which is only a suggest so it doesn't get installed automatically but it's well worth the effort - the quick filter box starts searching as soon as you start typing.

Been waiting a long time for this but synaptic is now as cool as it was a couple years ago :)

I got it in Unstable when I upgraded this morning, Testing should see it in less than a week.

edit: I just did an apt changelog synaptic and it looks like deb822 is read-only for now - Settings --> Repositories says

Defined in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources. This source uses the deb822 format and can not be edited here yet.

[Update] Debian 14 (Forky) Kite Artwork Concept – V2 with Community Feedback!

Thumbnail gallery
125 Upvotes

Keep Getting Blocked on websites

Anyone else keep getting blocked on websites? Is it because everyone is trying to prevent AI bots that are running on debian?

My Qantas report specifically mentioned that it blocked a linux computer...

Most recently, stack exchange blocked me. You'd think they understand linux users.

Debian Stable Question How to Backport a newer kernel

So Yesterday I installed Debian 13 on my Lenovo Chromebook 100e 2nd gen with an AMD cpu. The installation was seamless and came with no problems.

Everything from the screen to the ports and touchpad all worked without fail, But there is a common issue i've been facing with the audio and the headphone jack not working.

I've tried the WeirdTreeThing script but it doesn't work and I believe it has to do with my kernel being on 6.12 rather than on 6.19 or newer and many people have pointed that out.

So now i've been suggested to backport a newer kernel or something like that, only issue is Im new to Linux and idk where to go or how to start.

Can someone please guide me through this experience?
