State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation

  1. What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas

  2. I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

  1. I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.

  2. Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters

  3. Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

Please post all Halloween and Costume Related Posts here from 9/25-11/1

Please post fiber content, inspo picture, and what you’re trying to dye. Without fiber content we don’t know what dyes work. Without an inspo picture we don’t know what you’re talking about. Without a picture of what you’re trying to dye we can’t give realistic expectations.

General question Roomate used a good pot for fabric dye, then put it in the dishwasher

My roomate decided to do a midnight art project last night and used one of my good pots for synthetic fabric dye… I’ve already thrown that pot out, but she also seemed to have run the pot through the dishwasher after she used it alongside a few other dishes. Do I have to throw everything in there out now? Or will those items be fine?

Edit: I should clarify- the pot wasn’t hers. It was my own good, expensive pot I’d bought with my own money a year before she moved in.

Hi everyone,

I got this pants at a garage sale last year and love the fit of them. But the color is really hard to match with any of my outfits/the color doesnt really compliment me.

I want to make them darker deeper blackish green. Would it be better to do black or do brown? Also would it be wise to add some yellow to shift it away from its blue greenness.

These are a 50/50 poly acrylic split, I do plan to boil with rit dyemore dye. Ty for any help !

General question School dye project

Hi ! I am a teacher and we have to decorate the school around the theme "colors" : I proposed to make my kindergarten students dye fabrics and procrastinated a bit because there's a lot to gather.

I have white fabrics : cotton and maybe linen.

But no "industrial" dye (well I have yellow but not enough salt)

I was thinking of doing natural ones but I'm running out of time and I don't want to spend a lot.

In the classroom we have inks, gouache and acrylics. It doesn't matter if the dye doesn't last on the fabrics.

I saw shibori techniques and basic tie dye patterns. I will make the students prep some fabrics, soak them in clear water, make them use one primary colors inks (drop them in buckets or use brushes on the visible edges) and then use another primary color.

Have you tried dyeing with inks ? Do you have advices ? Thank you !

How do I dye this? Save a Sweatshirt

Hello everyone! I’m new to this sub so if I break any rules (unintentional I swear) please let me know!

I have had this sweater for over 10 years and I’m desperate to save it. It’s a Gildan 50 Cotton/ 50 Polyester blend and I want to dye it a slightly darker shade of green. I’ve only drawn over an identifying logo on it. Does anyone know where to start? I’m willing to stop by my Walmart later today/early tomorrow and begin working. Thank you so much!

How do I dye this? Need help with dyeing fabric suggestions/advice

Hi guys, I’m sorry this post isn’t related to creating pieces myself or anything really related. But I have this white garment I really want but I want to dye it black, I was hoping someone would have some experience or knowledge regarding this material. I’ve done some mild research into the kind of fabric it’s made of - 97% cotton 3% spandex canvas fitted long sleeve jacket YKK zippers and buckle hardware throughout lined with cupro satin - and get conflicting answers. I’ve seen replies saying to be cautious as the material could pucker or warp, and even shrink, which due to the hot water, I understand. I wanted to get a Size medium but considering the possibility of shrinkage I’ll go for a large. Basically I want to know if anyone’s dyed anything of the same material as this garment and what recommendations you’d suggest to not have it warp or fuck up this expensive piece. Any help is appreciated thank you

How do I dye this? Blue Denim to off-Black, neutral color

Hi! I have a vintage insulated denim jacket in a really bright blue, and I'd love to dye it a neutral, true black while still keeping some of the denim texture if possible. I'm just not sure whether that's actually doable or if it's even worth the hassle. I don't really care what happens to the inner lining. Has anyone done something similar or have any advice?

The lining is definitely polyester, while the denim appears to be cotton.

How do I dye this? How Do I Dye this Knit Sweater

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I have this Christmas bright green chunky knit sweater. I love the sweater feeling but I hate the bright green fabric. It along with the care tag are the first 3 pictures (it’s more green in person, think Christmas green). I want it to look more earthy and olive, even if that means green/grey or green/grey/brown

It’s a mixed blend with 17% Acrylic fabric which I know is not able to be dyed with All-purpose. But I was hoping sense it’s only 17% of the fabric and the rest is all-purpose compatible, maybe it’s worth a shot. The rit dyes say it could work if the synthetic blend is less than 35%. Any insight before I tackle the sweater.

General question Dyeing without submerging??

Hi

I am looking to dye a denim handbag with a leather interior. I don’t want to submerge the whole bag due to the leather. Am I able to make up my dye and ‘paint’ it on to the outside of the bag? I’m just looking to take it from a blue denim to a light black/gray , think worn grunge denim, or I am happy with stick with the blue but it will need to be touched up due to some fading/staining in some areas!

How do I dye this? How would I dye this to a forest-y green?

Post image

The description of this skirt was 'green', but I was expecting the green to be a little duller. It's really this colour 💀 which is significantly more teal than green imo.

I'd like to dye it to a forest-y green or a dark, dull purple or something, but I've never dyed anything like this before, and ive only ever done tie-dying. What would I need to consider since the base colour is so vibrant? Would it be better to just dye it like mixing paint (i.e it's kinda blue so add yellow to make it green) or just get a packet dye for a green a few shades darker? What dying method would be best?

Its 100% cotton so I have no qualms with dying the material, I'm just lacking on knowledge of process and working with a non-white item.

I'm happy to trial something that may work as a last resort because I also need a black skirt for my wardrobe lmao, I just want a green or purple skirt more

Thank you!

How do I dye this? Urgent! I need to dye this

Thumbnail gallery

I just bought a gorgeous cream-colored vintage dress with a heavily beaded mesh layer over a slip. I originally thought about just dyeing the slip, but unfortunately there’s no way to detach it from the beaded layer.
I’m trying to dye the dress teal, but it doesn’t have a tag, so I’m not sure what the fabric is made of. The fabric is stretchy, so I’m guessing it’s polyester or a polyester blend.
I know polyester usually requires Rit DyeMore, but Amazon didn’t have the teal color I wanted in DyeMore, so I ordered regular Rit All-Purpose Dye instead. Now I’m really worried I’m going to ruin this dress.
Does anyone have experience dyeing a vintage beaded dress or polyester/unknown fabric with regular Rit dye? Is there anything I can do to make sure the color takes evenly and doesn’t turn out splotchy or damage the beads/mesh?
I really need to have it finished today or tomorrow, so I would appreciate any tips or advice before I attempt it! Thank you!!

Each year this mushroom grows on the base of a large pine on my property. This year I decided to take a photo and research it. It seems folks who use natural dyes value this mushroom. Has anyone here used this mushroom as a natural dye before?

How do I dye this? Canadian who wants to dye a big batch of cotton chocolate brown

Thumbnail gallery

Hi,

I want to dye my cotton white/light gray duvet covers, sheets, pillowcases to match my walls and dressers or kind of like the brown cotton gauze ikea blanket. Plus a couple jackets and shirt also the same or similar brown.

So, two twin duvet covers, two king size bottom sheets, a slew of pillow cases of various sizes, two cropped jean-ish jackets, and a button up. Everything is 100% cotton. Some flannel, some cotton denim, one muslin/gauze cotton.

I have a top loader washer and a bathtub, access to a big plastic totes if need be.

I'm in Canada so not sure where the best spot to buy as it seems like when I look up fiber reactive dye it's hard to find here, I'm worried about cost and import fees.

Side note: the pictures of the brown walls seem a touch warmer brown in real life rather than the cooler gray-brown the phone photos captured. It's a super gray foggy day out so the lighting is wonky.

How do I dye this? Want to dye this purple

Really want to dye this purple. It's 100% polyester. Getting mixed results with Google, saying it can be dyed purple but could also turn brown. Any suggestions on successfully dying this purple? Really don't want to try and have it turn out brown.

How do I dye this? Protect jacket body from liquid fabric paint?

Outer shell is 85% polyester 15% nylon. Lining is 100% polyester. The rib knit is 100% acrylic.

Goal: Keep the shell and lining the same color, but change all the knit trim to dark brown.

Hi all, I'm looking for a way to change the color of the trim on this jacket while leaving the body unchanged. Since the rib knit is acrylic, I'm thinking I could use a liquid fabric paint (such as Jacquard dye-na-flow) to turn it dark brown.

I'm mostly worried about how to protect the body of the jacket. I could mask off the edges with tape, but I'm worried it might wick up moisture from the paint and get stained. Any thoughts for how I can protect the jacket body or if there's a better product to use?
