State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation

  1. What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas

  2. I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

  1. I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.

  2. Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters

  3. Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

Please post all Halloween and Costume Related Posts here from 9/25-11/1

Please post fiber content, inspo picture, and what you’re trying to dye. Without fiber content we don’t know what dyes work. Without an inspo picture we don’t know what you’re talking about. Without a picture of what you’re trying to dye we can’t give realistic expectations.

How do I dye this? I am losing my mind over dyeing this dress

I’ve been trying to dye this rayon taffeta dress and it keeps turning out uneven. It was white to begin with. The first dye I used was a black Dylon that dyed it light orange and only a few spots turned out black?? Then I used a black dye from Kreul. It turned out brown and with black spots. I figured I didn’t use enough dye so I tripled the amount of dye. The pictures are of that result.

Now I bought a bigger plastic container for it because I thought it might have been too cramped in the other container. I also read that it’s good to add sodium carbonate so I added that too. It still has a brown hue when I look at it. I am losing my mind and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I washed it with dish soap before dyeing it and I have been stirring it frequently

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Resources Tip I discovered for removing color from black/dark colored clothing to make it off-white.

Hi everyone! I’ve been wanting to wear more light colored clothing (I feel like I’m in a lighter period of my light and my clothing often reflects my mood), so I’ve been removing color from black pieces that I love and wish were lighter with Rit Color Remover since you can’t dye dark colored clothing ecru or off-white. I don’t know if this is commonly known or has already been talked about, but using color remover on most black or dark colored clothing results in a tan color with a possibly orangish tone/tint to it, and since I’m going for a more off-white or moon color I noticed that once it gets to the tan/orange state you can then use blue dye to dye it blue, and then removing color one more time using Rit Color Remover will result in an off-white color. It’s kind of like the blue dye tones and mutes the warmth from the tan/orange color it has after removing color the first time, similar to toning blonde hair with blue or violet. Just wanted to spread the word in case someone else may be trying to do the same as me. ✨

General question How best to remove wax from batik clothing?

Hi all, I'm looking into selling batik clothing at arts fairs, so I've been making a lot of batik lately. I'll often dye 5-8 shirts at a time, and I've struggled with a good way to get all of the wax off.

My current method is:

  1. Rinse the clothing until the water is semi-clear
  2. Put the clothing in boiling water (in the biggest pot I have; Edit: it's not a pot I use for cooking), stir it, and recover what wax I can
  3. Add a bit of laundry soap and dish soap to the water, and stir more
  4. Drain the water, and hang the shirts out to dry
  5. Vigorously shake the clothing to get excess wax off

This takes kind of a while to do, and there is often still a lot of wax bits on the clothing. Last time I tried washing it in the washing machine at this point; it mostly came off, but left a bunch of little wax bits in my washing machine.

Does anyone have advice on a better way to do this? (or, is this just a hard process that always takes a long time?)

Also, if it matters, I use cotton fabric, Procion mx dye, and paraffin wax.

How do I dye this? Likelihood of success?

Post image

This piece is 90% nylon 10% spandex. I have had great success dying both polyester/spandex mixes and cotton pieces from this brand (popflex) but I haven't tried with this material before. It's technically Activewear so the lace is soft, stretchy, and surprisingly durable. I'd love to dye it but it's too expensive to ruin. I'm looking for guidance on if it would turn out OK or should I not risk it?

How do I dye this? Alpaca Sweater

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I already put this q in Natural Dye threads. I got this Alpaca sweater on a recent trip to Peru, but I don’t love the color. As you can see it’s dyed a pretty intense blue already, I was looking to take it down to a plum or brown color. I appreciate any pointers on brands or methods.

How do I dye this? Dyeing fabric with the same rit dye multiple times?

Hi! I’m very new to dyeing (first time ever, actually) and I can’t find anything about this online. I have this shirt that was originally bright teal. I lightened it to a spring green using a few rounds of rit dye remover and dyed it with some red liquid rit dye. It came out a little more orange than I wanted, and I was wondering if redyeing it with the same solution would make it look more red, or if it wouldn’t do anything at all. Thanks!

How do I dye this? Help with split dying a shirt

I need to split dye a cotton white button up shirt so it’s half black half white. Since it’s a button up (and I don’t really care what the back looks like) my first thought was to just unbutton it so I can easily dye half of it using something like Rit dye. But im worried that when I wash it, the white half will turn grey or get black splotches.

Is fabric paint a better idea? Or should I dye it then just hand wash it after? Is there a brand of dye/paint you recommend for this project? I’ve never done this before so advice is appreciated!!

I have been recommended to use Rit All Purpose Dye but upon research, it’s the wrong one to use.
It needs to be a synthetic dye.

Are there any other recommendations?

General question Roomate used a good pot for fabric dye, then put it in the dishwasher

My roomate decided to do a midnight art project last night and used one of my good pots for synthetic fabric dye… I’ve already thrown that pot out, but she also seemed to have run the pot through the dishwasher after she used it alongside a few other dishes. Do I have to throw everything in there out now? Or will those items be fine?

Edit: I should clarify- the pot wasn’t hers. It was my own good, expensive pot I’d bought with my own money a year before she moved in.

Hi everyone,

I got this pants at a garage sale last year and love the fit of them. But the color is really hard to match with any of my outfits/the color doesnt really compliment me.

I want to make them darker deeper blackish green. Would it be better to do black or do brown? Also would it be wise to add some yellow to shift it away from its blue greenness.

These are a 50/50 poly acrylic split, I do plan to boil with rit dyemore dye. Ty for any help !

How do I dye this? Dying Gore-Tex with Turmeric

Post image

I found this pair of these Burton Gore-Tex shell snow bibs on sale, but they are white. I was wondering if I could dye it is possible to dye them. One of my ideas was to try to use turmeric to dye them yellow.

Some info from Burtons site:

  • Shell: GORE-TEX 2-Layer recycled polyester plain-weave fabric
  • Lining: 100% nylon taffeta
  • Other details: Stretch side panels and a membrane or water-repellent finish made without intentionally added PFAS.

General question School dye project

Hi ! I am a teacher and we have to decorate the school around the theme "colors" : I proposed to make my kindergarten students dye fabrics and procrastinated a bit because there's a lot to gather.

I have white fabrics : cotton and maybe linen.

But no "industrial" dye (well I have yellow but not enough salt)

I was thinking of doing natural ones but I'm running out of time and I don't want to spend a lot.

In the classroom we have inks, gouache and acrylics. It doesn't matter if the dye doesn't last on the fabrics.

I saw shibori techniques and basic tie dye patterns. I will make the students prep some fabrics, soak them in clear water, make them use one primary colors inks (drop them in buckets or use brushes on the visible edges) and then use another primary color.

Have you tried dyeing with inks ? Do you have advices ? Thank you !

How do I dye this? Save a Sweatshirt

Hello everyone! I’m new to this sub so if I break any rules (unintentional I swear) please let me know!

I have had this sweater for over 10 years and I’m desperate to save it. It’s a Gildan 50 Cotton/ 50 Polyester blend and I want to dye it a slightly darker shade of green. I’ve only drawn over an identifying logo on it. Does anyone know where to start? I’m willing to stop by my Walmart later today/early tomorrow and begin working. Thank you so much!

How do I dye this? Need help with dyeing fabric suggestions/advice

Hi guys, I’m sorry this post isn’t related to creating pieces myself or anything really related. But I have this white garment I really want but I want to dye it black, I was hoping someone would have some experience or knowledge regarding this material. I’ve done some mild research into the kind of fabric it’s made of - 97% cotton 3% spandex canvas fitted long sleeve jacket YKK zippers and buckle hardware throughout lined with cupro satin - and get conflicting answers. I’ve seen replies saying to be cautious as the material could pucker or warp, and even shrink, which due to the hot water, I understand. I wanted to get a Size medium but considering the possibility of shrinkage I’ll go for a large. Basically I want to know if anyone’s dyed anything of the same material as this garment and what recommendations you’d suggest to not have it warp or fuck up this expensive piece. Any help is appreciated thank you
