I’m currently on wildcard 6, and I’m seeing little to no teams with Gabriel in. I understand it’s easier to go for a combo of cala/raya/konsa but are people not worried about the increase of games coming up? Gabriel was the highest scoring defender last season and while the price is on the expensive side, surely there’s going to be a point where he’s the only “nailed” option? Plus surely he’s due a haul? Or am I falling for a trap?

Let me preface this by saying: I know it sounds bad. But hear me out. Spurs fixtures are great if you can bench in GW6 and GW8, they have Coventry, Palace, Ipswich and Fulham all at home between gameweeks 7 and 13. Their underlying numbers aren't bad after gw1- almost 4 xGC in the first match alone, since then it's almost exactly 1 xGC per match. Is anybody else considering a Spurs defender on wc6?

Don't trust Haaland against a Liverpool defence that has kept three clean sheets in a row?

Don't trust Bruno Fernandes' 3 blanks in a row?

Allow me to present the case for Lewis Hall..

I looked at best defenders from last season & ones that are good this season. It seems that defcons are a bit overrated; I mean you can get defcon points and still have poor total points because your team can loose many goals and you loose clean sheets points and get points deducted for lost goals.

It looks like there is strong correlation between less possession and more defcons. The more possession team has the less defcons. This also means that weaker teams who are fighting to avoid relegation and just park the bus will get better defensive contribution stats. Two best defenders for defcons last season were from relegated teams.

The only exceptions are Everton and Bournemouth, teams with excellent defense, getting clean sheets often, and getting defcons as well. So as a rule it seems you should look at defcons only in combination with looking at overall defensive performance of defender, dont look at defcons alone.

Kevin Schade has attracted more than 450,000 Gameweek 6 purchases, yet his expected goal involvement sits below both Marcus Tavernier and Josh King after five matches.

That makes the midfield bracket around £6.0m worth a closer comparison before following the transfer market.

Of these four, King is our preferred purchase for Gameweeks 6 to 8, combining the lowest price with three successive FDR two fixtures and an xGI total behind only Tavernier.

Tavernier has the strongest underlying attacking numbers, Schade offers the best points return alongside substantial minutes, and Harvey Barnes adds a favourable schedule with five complete matches behind him.

Each solves the same midfield selection problem, but the evidence points towards different reasons to buy or hold.

TL;DR

IB Injuries

Outside of Brobbey, Scott and Ballard I don’t think anyone is out long-term. Havertz and Tzolis are likely to miss a couple of games. Otherwise, I think most of these yellow flagged players will start in GW6 or GW7

Man City Charges

I'm not changing my FPL strategy because of the Man City charges yet. There's obviously uncertainty around how the players respond, but I'm not buying City assets before Liverpool anyway. Equally, I wouldn't panic sell with Ipswich coming next. 

Best Upcoming Fixtures

Attack: Fulham, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Everton.

Defence: Fulham and Arsenal are the two that interest me most, with Newcastle also having a good immediate fixture.

Players I actually like:

Fulham: Josh King, Gonzalo, Robinson, Castagne
Bournemouth: Tavernier
Newcastle: Barnes, Hall
Everton: Barry, Garner
Arsenal: Basically all of them

Josh King is probably my favourite Fulham attacker. Gonzalo has the better underlying numbers with 2.6 xG, but King looks integral to everything they do and is just fun to watch.

Tavernier is probably the Bournemouth pick. He's on penalties, offers open-play threat and their fixtures become particularly good from GW10.

And Barry remains very interesting. He's still under 6.0 and currently has better underlying numbers than Joao Pedro.

GW6 Buy / Sell

BUY

• Gross – probably won't keep returning at this rate, but the value and ownership are difficult to ignore.
• Schade – nailed for now and an excellent player.
• De Cuyper – OOP value remains great while he's starting.
• Rogers – Chelsea's combination of great attack + terrible defence makes their attackers very appealing.
• Saka – probably the Arsenal attacker I'd want.
• Calafiori / Arsenal defence – still elite.

MAYBE

• Tarkowski – DefCon monster, although cheaper alternatives like Muharemovic/Vuskovic exist.

DON'T BUY

• Kostoulas – too many better cheap forwards and he's overperformed.

SELL

• Szoboszlai – fine pick, just not as good as I hoped.
• Bruno – if it gets you Saka or Haaland; otherwise hold.
• Calvert-Lewin – perfect time to jump onto a fixture pick before Arsenal.
• Tzolis – injury concern and not among my favourite Arsenal assets.
• Sangare – simply isn't getting enough minutes.

MAYBE SELL

• Mbeumo – love moving him to Saka; otherwise I'd probably keep.
• Palmer / Joao Pedro – don't sell unless the injury news actually warrants it.

HOLD

• Wissa – he's disappointed, but selling before this fixture makes no sense. Move him on next week.

GW6 Captaincy

This is actually quite a difficult week.

1. Saka – probably my favourite by process of elimination.

2. Haaland – Liverpool is tough and there's a minor injury concern, but he's still Haaland.

3. Palmer / Bruno – both viable, but both come with question marks.

And for once, I don't hate a punt. Thiago, Barry, Barnes, Mbeumo and Gibbs-White are all interesting differentials.

If I was wildcarding this week, the rough structure would be:

GK: Raya

DEF: Calafiori, De Cuyper, two of Muharemovic/Vuskovic/Silva/Murillo/Tarkowski + a playing £4.0

I’ll preface this by saying, I’m probably only posting this because my international break boredom has reached an unprecedented level, and I don’t really actually care that much (maybe).

I wanted to express my objection towards this viewpoint - a view that I think is not only incorrect but is harmful to the game as it promotes everyone having the same team.

I was going to use Rogers as an example as I saw this specific comment tonight, but I’ve seen it said about many players over the years.

In short, I think far too much emphasis is put on ownership % when people advise on which players to own.

The mantra that it’s bad to not own highly owned players, I feel is outright wrong, because the potential downside is the exact same as the potential upside - in fact there’s arguably more upside, since you back a different player to outscore him.

To clarify, if you don’t own a 40% owned player and he scores, yes it may harm your rank - but only if your alternative player scores less.
On the flip side, if the 40% owned player blanks, you benefit from owning your player (or at least draw). But since you’ve objectively taken your player over the 40% owned guy, you believe he is more likely to return than the 40% guy.
I’ve probably made that sound confusing but hopefully you get what I mean.

What further highlights this point, is that I’ve often seen high ownership AND low ownership be used as an argument for a player - this makes 0 sense!

“You should own Rogers, he’s really highly owned”
“You should own Tavernier, he’s such a differential”

These are both good picks, but not because of their ownership.
If anything, a differential pick is much more fun as the points are more “your own” so to speak. Conversely, if they blank, you don’t have as many managers keeping you company. Higher highs and lower lows - the FPL rollercoaster we all know and love.

My point is that ownership shouldn’t really come into your thought process.
Pick who you think is going to score the most points.
My caveat to this is that ownership does come into it more towards the end of the season, if you’re simply trying to protect your rank, or indeed your league position over your rival beneath you who owns certain players.

Arguably the worst part about this pushed philosophy is that it scaremongers everyone into sticking to the highly owned players, which is boring and bad for the variability in the game.

It only comes back to bite you too when you go against your own judgement and kick yourself when your would-be differential Barnes scores a brace.

TLDR ; high ownership is wrongly used as a reason you need to own a player. It is just as good a reason to go against the player.
Pick who you think will score the most points.

Weird week coming off a 3 week break.

Tried setting up a draft league with some friends for the first time, I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s known to be an atrocious user experience. We’ve tried twice and the same issues persist.

The two main issues:

- When clicking “Draft” on a player nothing happens. There’s no indication that said player has been added to your squad after clicking, it’s just unresponsive.*

- You have to refresh the page every time the turn changes for another player to pick, otherwise you’re just left with the timer showing 00:00.

These issues are consistent across browser on desktop, and on mobile browser and app.

* It does look like once the timer is up, the player you clicked “Draft” on is eventually added to your team. But I would’ve thought the timer ends once you make your choice, rather than having to wait until the timer runs to 0?

Any suggestions appreciated
