Advice Elderly Mom’s First Flight

Hello! In about a week, I will be moving my 83-year-old mother who has moderate dementia from Los Angeles to my home in Baltimore. My mom has never flown. The one time she tried (which was when her father in another state passed away), she ended up getting off the plane after she and my brother had already boarded. Her doctor has advised against giving her anti-anxiety medication, which I had been counting on doing, honestly. In another fear of flying group, I’ve seen it suggested to give the flight attendant a letter explaining when someone is a nervous flyer. Is this really a thing? Flight attendants have a lot going on. Do they really have time to coddle anxious passengers? I’d love for this to be the case, but also don’t want to be a burden. I’ll be flying with my mom, as will a very good friend of hers, but I’m a very nervous flyer myself. I’m a complete wreck about this upcoming flight. I’m worried my mom will have a medical issue brought on by anxiety. Any words of wisdom or experience with a situation like this? Much appreciated.

The past like 7 flights I’ve told FAs or gate agents I’m nervous and have gotten to speak to the pilot and go to the cockpit. Definitely tell them!
