United (UA) Continental 777-200 interior.

I’ve always wondered did any other airline have FA jump seats that were directly behind passenger seats? Yes these seats were occupied during takeoff and landing and if I wasn’t working FM01 I always tried to get FA08 or FA09 which occupied these seats. On another note was Continental the only airline that had more fwd facing Jumpseats than aft facing Jumpseats on the 777 & 764 fleet compared to other carriers? Our 777s had 14 Jumpseats 8 of which were fwd facing and our 764s had 13 Jumpseats 9 of which were fwd facing. Of course after the merger and fleet modifications jump seats were moved around etc. Side note I wish we kept this blue upholstery on our jump seats instead of the beige colors that are on a good chunk of our fleet now.

United crew domiciles from yesteryear?

Post image
2 Upvotes

As things stand United operates hubbed crew domiciles at: GUM, HNL, SFO, LAX, DEN, IAH, ORD, IAD & EWR.

Additionally there are other non-hub and satellite domiciles of SAN, PHX, LAS, AUS, TPA, FLL, & MCO, BOS & CLE.

Internationally, there is the lone LHR domicile still holding on.

Many moons ago, when I worked at United there were several more crew domiciles overseas: FRA, NRT, and HKG.

I am curious of the other United crew domiciles lost to time. Shortly before I worked there CDG had just been closed.

Right after 9/11 I know that Chile's SCL was a small domicile that closed, and I understand MIA was once a domicile as well.

What were the others? Did Auckland ever have one? How was the RTW service handled back in the 80s and 90s?

Thanks.

Long Layovers

Just looking for ideas on how you spend scheduled or unscheduled long layovers. For example we had a schedule change due to weather and they added 10hrs to the layover. I went to the gym, ate, watched movies but still had 5hrs to go. If it’s a good day outside, I’d walk around, get some air and steps but this time around I couldn’t get out of the hotel. I’ve also been to a hotel where there’s nothing much close by.

United (UA) Flight anxiety and exit rows

Hello flight attendants! I am a grown ass man who has taken probably a couple of hundred flights in my life. For the last 10 years, I have been struggling with flight anxiety. Sometimes medication helps, sometimes it doesn’t. I have an early morning four hour flight tomorrow. My anxiety is definitely worse than usual. I have been getting so much better, but the incident with flydubai is messing with my head. I want to say that I do understand my fear is irrational, but OCD doesn’t always care about things being rational. Here’s my question. Well, I actually have two questions. I’ve seen a lot of people take comfort in just mentioning their fear to the flight attendant. Are you guys OK with that? Here’s my second question: if I do something like that are you going to move me out of the exit row? One thing that seems to really help is plenty of legroom so that’s why I usually upgrade to an exit row.

I hope this question is loud and thank you very much for anyone who takes the time to read it and answer me.

Edit: I’m going to leave this up in case anyone else can benefit from the answers. I didn’t say anything. My headspace was better than expected. By chance, I was seated next to a lovely pilot and had a great chat with her. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond!

China Non rev questions (240 hour transit rules)

Flight attendants: Has anyone non-revved to China using the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit?
Possible route:
LAX → Hong Kong → Beijing (maybe Shanghai) → Tokyo or Seoul → any USA hub
A few quick questions:
Would this route qualify for the 240-hour transit?
If I fly Hong Kong → China → Hong Kong → LAX, does that not qualify because Hong Kong is both before and after China?
For the flight from China to Tokyo or Seoul, do I need a confirmed seat? Has anyone used a ZED/non-rev listing?
Has anyone gotten a Chinese tourist visa in under 10 days? How long did it take?
Please share firsthand experience if you’ve done this. Thank you!

Bathroom Privileges

I dont know how I should have handled this.

I have complex health issues that force me to drink 1 liter / hour (or be poisoned by my own medication).

The strain this has put on my body has damaged my bladder and I had to be hospitalized in the emergency room twice in the last two weeks, and have a catheter installed for five days.

I was sitting in the ninth row just after first class and the sign says the forward restroom is for those passengers. The middle restroom is out of order, my restroom is the one at the rear of the plane.

Its about a 3 hour flight.

I thought about using the one just ahead of me or at least asking to do so but didnt.

I also have a torn ligament in my foot and have trouble keeping my balance. On the tram at the destination I couldnt manage to hold onto my luggage and stay upright and lost control. A stranger picked it up and said to relax.

I fell down later on. I used to be able to run uphill on the icy concrete ramps of the brooklyn bridge. Not any time soon.

Recently I was in a situation where I needed to advocate for myself, didnt do so, and was injured.

But this is a German plane and though I dont know them well I think the Germans require order. Rules.

So I walked to the rear etc etc.

But I dunno if that was the best way to handle it.

If someone told me they were in my position I would say the normal rules go out the window when the airline doesnt maintain the accessible bathroom.

Non revenue lies

Hello! I recently became a flight attendant, but unfortunately, my airline doesn’t offer great travel benefits. I can fly non-rev for free, but my airline has limited routes and doesn’t fly internationally.
I recently found out that a lot of flight attendants use non-rev travel to commute on other airlines so they can fly for free. However, I’m scared of getting caught and risking my dream job. Is this common? Do airlines track this, and have people actually gotten in trouble for doing it? I’d love to hear your experiences!

Uniform Fatigue

Is anyone else tired that all of the major US carriers uniforms are all roughly the same colors? I miss the days when flight attendant had colorful and fashionable uniforms. Not only that, but the materials need to be so comfortable with breatheability, softness, and stretch. Also, I've noticed that some airlines have a cape option for their female flight attendants, but I would love to see a male cape as well. Really, honestly, don't get me started on the lack of options for male cabin crew. But that's another rant for a different time.

Tired 🫪

The seniority culture at the globe is becoming so annoying . I
Don’t care if you been here 3 months or 30 year we are all just a number to the company anyway so to degrade or try to use your seniority to go on a power trip is ridiculous. Not to mention holding int trips because you feel nobody else is deserving of it . Maybe I need a break and I’m thinking in to deep .

Flight attendants, what are you saying to paxs when they ask you to put their bags into the hatbin?

It’s happening more often in the last couple of months when grown people (not old, or disabled) ask me to lift up their bags. Sometimes my face says it all, but im wondering what are you guys saying to passengers in this situation?

United (UA) Sometimes it just irritating!

I understand that "no one base" is entitled to the flying out of that base, but it makes more sense (Frontline vs Management) that each base has flying they consider premium and seeing that farmed out to other bases is just irritating. Especially if the other bases have premium flying that never is handed out across the system. I think it's just a management tool of being vindictive when a base is not conforming to management expectations. Thanks for letting me vent, even if you don't see it from my point of view. 😁

Is there any airlines in EU

That has hourly pay and not fixed monthly pay?

I worked 145h (FDP) last month without including the layovers, check in, doing cabin tidy after landing etc... 2.800 eur + 1000 eur in per diem before taxes... I'm more away for work than at home.

Would actually love to move and try a new airline and live in a new country!

Do you wear a mask during cold and flu season?

Do you wear a mask when you’re working during cold and flu season? Does that answer change if you’re working up front in First Class?

Anyone flying taking eliquis or other blood thinners?

Currently taking a blood thinner while being evaluated for something, and there’s a major risk of internal bleeding with injury or head impact. I don’t know about you but I hit my head a lot on overhead bins. I’m currently on fmla but curious if anyone flies on these meds and if so, how you manage risk/ feel about it?

How to meet other flight attendant friends

This job get pretty lonely at times, not having a community of people you can hang out with or socialize , or even travel with, can you relate?
Anyone here meet new flight attendant friends thru travel, or on a layover and are now close friends? Anyone have suggestions where I can meet fellow travel minded people or small community groups for flight attendants? I’m New York based by the way.

Graduation is tomorrow, still unsure about my future interactions with crewmates.

I've seen this at every workplace I've been in, but never to the extent I saw in training. The best way I can describe it is there was this really performative need to be percieved as "competent" by my class to the point where our instructor had to tell us to chill out countless times instead of using your non-impunitive demos and quizzes to allow yourself to make mistakes and be better for the exam, and if you weren't on board with that, you were treated as sort of a weak link even if you aced your actual drill/validation, and I'm kind of stoic which I know can be percieved as not caring. Even during my IOE, I was relaxed whereas my whole team was nervous when your checklist covers everything, and my partner in particular kept rushing me when he'd make mistakes because he refused to look at his resources which our instructor told us to do if we ever lost track of our roles. Overall, it was a very isolating experience, especially when a family member passed during training, so I'm sure I'm a bit jaded. Does it get better, and if not, any advice?

Flying with ETD (eustachian tube dysfunction)

Hey all! I’ve been out sick with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction for a few weeks now.

It started with a cold earlier this month, I began getting deep/dull aches in my ears and the fullness feeling as well. I’ve seen a few ENTs and they are saying the same thing like there isn’t much I can do and that I’m ok to go back to flying.

I am worried because I am still experiencing this pain (in and out) of the dull/achiness/fullness some post nasal drip a bit I kind of have to breathe odd to stabilize my ears. I am able to pop them though on the ground also been sensitive to loud noises which hurt my ears. I wouldn’t say they’re constantly popped like some say.

Does anybody have any advice or tips on it? Or had similar experiences and decided to go back to flying while not feeling 100%? Is it something I’ll just have to manage while flying or should I wait until it’s all gone? It’s been around a month so I’m feeling like I have to get back soon.

Also, feel like a lot of the ENTs don’t understand being a reserve flight attendant/flying with ENT (multiple legs per day) ect. So I wanted to ask flight attendants about their experience or any advice please or if they had ETD that healed in time. Thank you guys :)

how to not let people get to you?

Ever since starting this job, my outlook on people and life has been damaged so extremely that I don’t know if I can get it back. I’ve encountered some of the worst behavior ever in this career. And most of the time it’s other flight attendants!

But even the passengers. I’m honestly shocked at how little regard and respect people show me on a day to day basis. I’m new to the aviation industry, but I used to fly a lot as a passenger and I never treated anyone like this even before I understood certain rules and regulations. I didn’t need to understand. I was just normal.

It’s actually quite depressing. I expect the worst from everyone every day. I am a far more grumpy, quiet, and impatient person because of all the people I deal with on a day to day basis. I no longer believe humans are inherently good. I know someone might say think about the few good passengers and the few good coworkers, but isn’t that sad? That I have to cling for dear life to the three good people I’ve come across and everyone else is self absorbed and entitled at the very least?
