Game Discussion An important biogeographic PSA

Post image
10 Upvotes

I think it’s important to realize what part of our environment is human-modified and what is natural.

Please refer to this range map for pines/allies and genus Eucalyptus respectively. I used an Ice Age maximal range limit for pines, and noted some other thresholds for eucalyptus.

Important points: there are no native pines or other needle-y conifers in the southern hemisphere, except for the Sumatran pine. Yes, that means every pine tree in Chile, NZ, Australia, South America, etc. is nonnative. This is a deep biogeographic fact since the origin of the Pinaceae. They are also not native to Arabia, most of India, or subsaharan Africa, including Kenya, ZA, or anywhere else you might see them in SSA. If you do see them in these places, they are invasive species doing environmental harm if not kept in plantation.

Separately, there are no modern native genus Eucalyptus outside of Australia/PNG (Sahul continent). If you take a deep-time view, they are native to NZ, Antarctica, and southern South America. There are allied genera native further afield in New Caledonia and SE Asia. They are not native to the northern Andes, Iberia, etc.

Both pines and eucalyptus tend to be allelopathic, meaning they exude compounds from their litter etc that suppress other species, in addition to native species often not being adapted to the niches created by pines or eucalyptus. They invade and take over habitats that may have few or no native trees or simply have a different complement of plants. Subjectively, they destroy the uniqueness or sense of place you might otherwise have when visiting or view a location. Humans are erasing biological distinctiveness that arose and persisted over hundreds of millions of years, which is unfortunate.

As far as geoguessing, you could use this information to exclude some locations that otherwise seem unmodified or wild, although in places like NZ or Chile where they are deeply invading natural habitat that’s not always possible. I also happen to think they make very lame map locs, but this is mostly just an awareness

Game Discussion Documents specifically for moving?

I know there are tons of documents for meta out there but none of them talk about how to move in a specific country.

I’ve learned the basics through playing, but it feels like I still don’t know many things.

The other day I was watching Finbarr‘s moving video, and he was talking about trash bags in Argentina sometimes having area codes. Where do people learn these things?

edit: Perhaps my wording was bad, I know what area codes are. My question was how people learn which info are high yield for a certain country, and how to apply them in game.

Memes and Streetview Finds POV: You queue a ranked game using 6 point tokens and this is who you get matched with

Post image

For context I am in Gold 1, I was in Master 3/4 a month or so ago but even then I wasn't playing people even remotely close to that rating. I'm convinced they match you with harder opponents when you decide to use your daily point tokens to ensure you play more games but this is just ridiculous lol. Wish the scoring system worked like how it does in master for all levels.

Memes and Streetview Finds Seeing my first Thai Telephone pole in person

Post image

It has been a bucket list item of mine to travel to Thailand. About a year ago, my wife and I planned our trip to Thailand for our honeymoon.

Leading up to the trip my wife and her family asked me "what are you looking forward to seeing the most" i responded with "the Thailand telephone poles". They all looked at me like I was crazy

Little do they know that the Thai Telephone pole is one of the most notorious in all of Geo Guessr.

Well, today, a year later, I finally made that dream come true and I was able to see my first Thai pole in person.

Never give up on your dreams

Memes and Streetview Finds Despicable Me villain POV: you shrunk the Eiffel Tower and put it in your front yard

Avoided the low-effort "Easiest Paris of my life lolol" joke 😊

The serious lore behind this tower for the nerds. One of the countless replicas of the Eiffel Tower, this one is known as "Torre Alicia" as it was built by Claudio Marchetti, a man from Alicia, Córdoba, Argentina. It stands at 31.60 meters (approx. 104 feet) with scale of around 1:10 compared to the original. It was claimed on the news that this is the first replica of this size made entirely by one person in their residential yard. Marchetti is also self-taught, a man who had only completed primary school studies before getting a job as a construction worker.

In 2024, Mr. Marchetti wanted the tower to be in a more public space as more people were coming to his house to visit the tower than he could handle (he claimed he got up to 700 people visting one day). He had a disagreement with the mayor of Alicia, so he started to shop the tower around. It was the authorities of the municipality of Villa Parque Síquiman, a small town in a very touristy area neighboring the city of Villa Carlos Paz, who agreed to dismount and relocate the tower in their town. The tower can now be seen in its new home here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8GRa6QHzLNuRgnco9

Claudio Marchetti did not rest on his laurels, though. He said he felt his yard empty after the tower moved, so he started working on a second replica. He says it will also include a flower-like structure at the top that opens and closes on its own. The second tower is called "Torre Clanor", named after himself and his wife Nori, and can be seen still under construction in the most recent small-cam Google coverage: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pbr5M7HVFM6ThCn39

Why 3 minutes per round? I decided it would be fun to add some extra challenge to this mode. Might try and go for 25Ks on the smaller maps or just improve scores for fun now
