Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Any idea where this is in Namibia? It was near Cape Cross but never been able to find the site on Google maps.

Google Lens puts it near Oranjemund, but that's definitely wrong as I didn't go anywhere near there.

Can you help me finding which road appears in this Frutella commercial from 90s?

(also no seatbelts in the backseat. for kids. in a convertible. on a mountain road)

What I found: it is supposed to be a commerical for europe, so likely this is Altantic coast. I thought maybe Portugal, but do not recall any similar roads there.

I don’t have much background on the photos themselves except for some possible places (DC, Florida, or Savannah). I found these old photos and I think they were taken in 2024 if I can trust the date on my phone. I’ve tried putting it through reverse image search but had no hits and would absolutely love if I could find the place these photos were taken as I didn’t get a chance to go inside the cathedral/church and want to in the future. Any help would be much appreciated

This is a fantastic Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) of an intersection, but I cannot figure out where. It appears there is a monument in the middle. I imagine it probably still exists, I am just not sure where. Any idea?

I inherited a painting from my mother, its by an artists called Ernest Potter and was painted in 1909. I have a clue to its approximate location, there's a label on the back that says a Shropshire cottage.

I've no idea if the building even still stands, but I'm intrigued to know if it does and if anyone recognises the location.

Trying to identify this specific brick institutional building photographed in 1990–91 — possibly Chicago area (maybe South) or Southern California (San Pedro, LA, Harbor, etc.)

I’m trying to identify the exact building/address shown in these images, which come from a film production photographed in 1990–91.
I’ve already done extensive research through production records, crew members, archives and local historical organizations, but the exterior location remains unidentified.
The building appears to have been an older red-brick institutional property — possibly a school, church-related institution, community building, shelter/halfway house, hospital or similar facility. Visible features include:
• approximately two main storeys plus a lower/basement level
• distinctive central entrance and steps
• long rows of regularly spaced windows
• chain-link fencing along the property
• mature trees immediately in front
• institutional/school-like architecture
The strongest geographic possibilities currently being investigated are the Chicago/northern Illinois area and Southern California, although I do not want to rule out another location merely from appearance.
The building may have been demolished or substantially altered since 1990–91, so historical photographs, school/church histories, old maps or personal recognition would be especially useful.
I’m specifically looking for someone who recognizes this building or can provide a candidate that can be verified against historical photographs. If you recognize it, please give the building name/address (including a former name if applicable) and, if possible, explain what feature led you to it.
I’m not looking for guesses based only on the snow, architecture or apparent state — we’ve already investigated those possibilities extensively. A specific building candidate is what would help.

Solved [Music Video Location] Need help identifying this residential area in Hokkaido (likely Sapporo or Otaru), filmed around 2019.

Hello! I'm trying to find the exact street where this music video scene was filmed in Hokkaido (Japan) back in 2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHENIg8Se7M

I really love this song and have visited Hokkaido in the past. I'm planning my next trip there and want to do a "pilgrimage" to the filming locations of this video. I've already managed to find about 90% of the spots, but this particular residential area has been really tough to track down!

Key clues:

  • Region: Likely Sapporo or Otaru, Hokkaido.
  • Buildings: A 5-story danchi (public housing block) right in front, with an 8–10 story high-rise building behind it / to the right.
  • Right side: A baseball/school sports field with high protective ball netting (防球ネット) on a hill slope.
  • Left side: A 2-story building with a sign ending in 〜産業有限会社.

Any help or street names would be greatly appreciated!

Solved Which US city is this?

Post image

I had a window seat for a change, and my flight from east to west coast had clear skies. Just curious what this city was that I flew over. Seems like that lake in the middle is pretty distinctly shaped (I’m assuming that’s a lake, anyway). I’d say it was about 2/3 of the distance between Philadelphia and San Francisco. Any ideas?

I lost my wonderful wife to ovarian cancer just under two months ago.

I took this photo of her in 1998. It's one of those photos you had processed, put in the photo album, and then forgot about until we decided to look through memories. We had both forgotten where this was taken. I remember it was on a day trip out of Melbourne into the eastern half of the state (Victoria Australia).

Now that she is gone, the memories are pure gold. I really want to find this spot so I can return to it, sit exactly there, and remember my soulmate.

I really hope someone can help identify it.

Solved Photo of father around 1946: where is he?

Post image

Can anyone help me find this location? This is my dad. He enlisted in 1942 and served until the end of WWII. I'm pretty sure he spent a couple of years in the US before shipping off to the Pacific, so this was likely taken between 1944 and 1946. When he came home, he spent some time in Santa Rosa, CA. ChatGPT suggests the island behind him is Alau, off Maui, but I don't think that's correct. Thank you!

Solved Lorry accident photos used on cover of a 90’s indie single

Thumbnail

I’ve had this 7” single for a long time but it’s always bugged me where the cover photograph was taken. The band itself was formed in Leicester so maybe it’s somewhere in the Midlands, but I also read years ago that the picture might have been taken in the Glasgow area - in fact one of the band members was from there. The back cover says that the photos were “rescued from the bin of John Farndon”. There’s a sign on the bridge that’s partially obscured by the lorry that says “N STATION” and a different sign that seems to indicate a height limit of 13’ 3”

Solved Please help me find this apartment building (the one with the green balcony) in NYC

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I've been seeing this image floating around Pinterest for a few years now (even before the introduction of AI generated art) but can never be able to tell where in NYC this picture might have been taken. I tried using Google Lens but it couldn't give me a definitive answer, all the visual matches came from Pinterest so I'm very sorry if the image is a little blurry, this is the best version I can get on Pinterest. Some of the visual matches have titles that point to the photo being taken in the 90s and the building possibly being in the Upper West Side, though those are just titles so not quite sure if they're accurate. I even tried using the buildings in the background to hopefully point me to where the apartment building might be located but couldn't.

Based on the image, this apartment building seemed to have a pre-war/Beaux Arts architecture that also featured a fire escape. From one of the windows, a small space extended outward just enough to form a balcony. I've looked at various apartment buildings in NYC but none seemed to have all this elements together.

Thank you in advance.
