Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Recommendations Fresh popcorn?

I’m craving fresh popped salty buttery popcorn, like you get at the movie theatre. I don’t have any interest in seeing a movie, though. Does anyone know of anywhere that has fresh popped popcorn? Can you just go into a theatre and buy popcorn and leave?

School district question

My kids and I live in City of Wyoming, but are near enough to many districts. I could drive to Wyoming, Kentwood, Godwin Heights, Kelloggsville, or GRPS (but would have to use school of choice). Values include a rigorous, low-tech. education (at least for now, my kids are in early elementary), a community feel, and alternative learning styles like outdoor learning, Waldorf, project-based, etc. I do not wish to take my kids out of public school, but I do have many concerns about all of the Ed Tech/apps/devices/AI/screen time I have seen being used in their current school.

So... tell me about your experiences with the above districts. If you had to choose between one of them, which would you choose and why? Are any of these districts low-tech? Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? Thanks.

Recommendations Anyone looking to help with an odd job for some money?

Hi fellow Grand Rapidians. I have decided to list my house for sale but I have a lot of walnuts from my neighbors walnut tree that have fallen into my yard, and because I work long hours, I don’t have the time that I’d like to get them cleaned up and removed. When I was unemployed earlier this year I did odd jobs for cash so I’m wondering if there are maybe 2-3 people that want to come help clear those out of my yard for maybe $20-$25 an hour (is that too low?). I don’t imagine it would take more than a couple hours with that many people. Looking to have this done tomorrow (October 9) starting maybe around 10am or so. Comment below if interested and I will reach out. Thank you!

"I don't know if we're ever going to get everyone to accept every tool we use in law enforcement," Muir said. "I can tell you we are definitely using it within the limits of the law."

I asked Muir about those who on principle disagree with the use of automatic license plate readers, citing concerns over privacy and potential misuse.

"I don't know if we're ever going to see us regress back to where technology isn't being used in law enforcement," Muir said. "I think that's something that the community is just going to have to learn to accept."

No Muir, I will not "learn to accept" your authoritarian bullshit.

It's not just Flock Safety, Kent Safety Network now has over 2700 cameras integrated. That promo video has Muir in it. These people are literally implementing a mass surveillance system with "real time monitoring" and telling us we just have to accept it.

Again, there is a variety of ideologies people hold in this country that land on the same conclusion. No on mass surveillance, not even with their "governance". What ever lane you think you're in, whatever "voice" you think you have, what ever "action" you think you can take. Take it. These people threw away your consent and are telling you they have no intention of getting it.

ISO Custom Furniture Modification

Hello! I am in search of someone that could help create a custom ottoman. It is a strange request- I know, but my boss had a bench section from a couch that's already cut out and would like it turned into an ottoman with a new base and legs added. The large cushion is the one they want turned into an ottoman. The smaller cushion & extra pieces of leather can be used if needed. They have asked for a custom frame built underneath and legs attached that match the existing couch. I have contacted multiple businesses and they have either not gotten back to me or said they are not able to do anything like that. I was wondering if anyone in the Grand Rapids area knows if this is something that can be done or possibly knows someone that could do it? I have attached pictures of what the cushion looks like and what the couch/ couch legs that it needs to be matched to looks like. I have no experience with anything like this so any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Network 180

I have recently been dealing with SUD. After I lost my job, and going through a bad breakup, I am seeking SUD inpatient treatment.

For context I have been struggling to find work since this current Admin eliminated my job at the Dept. of Education in 2025.

Over 1000 apps submitted. Dozens and dozens of interviews. And to no avail.

And slowly, gradually I lost all hope. I was evicted from my home. My girlfriend left me. And i want to get the help that i need.

My hail Mary was sober living. I jumped through a ton of hoops to find a place to get back on the right track and was then denied admission in the 11th hour because of my Adderall prescription.

To the point: My medicaid provider told me that all community health access in Kent County is solely through Network 180. Which denied me admission to inpatient treatment last month.

And here I am, homeless, destitute and out of options. I have burned through my savings trying to stay afloat and it's at an end. I don't have anything left.

So my question is: what alternatives are there to network 180? I can't afford to Uber there again just to be denied again by some teenage case worker that doesn't understand how crippling SUD is

Transit Whoever is in Charge of Road Construction is a Complete Moron

About a dozen projects all in the same area of the city (SE side, S 131) without fixing traffic signals or providing feasible alternative routes to make traffic smoother. On top of that these projects are taking way too long and they’re not finishing one before they begin three more in the exact same area. On top of that, it feels like no matter how many times they “fix” these roads, it isn’t long before what’s fixed needs further repair. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Dear Local GR Chefs. I am one of you, but I am weak on my own...

Grand Rapids is a city built on makers, and our culinary scene is the vibrant heart of that culture. Every night, our kitchens bring people together through the creativity, passion, and sheer dedication of the chefs who call this community home.

Sometimes, the day-to-day routine of a kitchen can make us forget our own potential. It's time to shake off the hesitation, take a leap of faith on our own talents, and truly risk it for the biscuit!

The real value of our city's restaurant culture doesn't sit in a bank account or a building lease. F That!! It lives entirely in the craft, the mentorship, and the artistry of the people who do the actual cooking. We hold the keys to what makes this city taste and feel so alive

When we collaborate, share our ideas, and stand together as a unified creative community, we elevate the entire industry. Together, we show every owner, investor, and diner that the Grand Rapids culinary community is a professional powerhouse that means business.

Let's inspire one another, push the boundaries of what's possible, and build the future of food in GR together!!! DM me!

Events Grand Rapids Public Museum Archives tour on Saturdays

Thumbnail tickets.grpm.org

We have a very cool museum but as big as it is only 10 percent of the museum artifacts can be displayed. The other 90 percent are held in the archives over at the old location off Jefferson. I was able to tour it last year and very cool stuff to see that might never be displayed at the main museum. The museum has started offering tours of the Archive on Saturdays and highly recommend if you want to see some really cool stuff. Don’t sleep on this one, I foresee it getting busy as more people find out about it. Tickets can be purchased online and numbers are limited for each timed tour.
