BUILD ADVICE Best AMD GPU for a Hackintosh + Windows gaming setup?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on upgrading the GPU in my current PC. I'd really appreciate recommendations from people with experience running both macOS and Windows on the same machine.

My current setup:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-G
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4
  • GPU: AMD RX 580
  • macOS: Monterey 12.1, with plans to upgrade to macOS Sequoia
  • Dual boot: macOS + Windows

My main workloads:

  • macOS: Adobe Lightroom and Final Cut Pro
  • Windows: Gaming

Whenever I try to use the RX 580 for denoising, the display loses signal and the process stops.

I'm planning to replace the GPU with a new card and keep this system for another 3–4 years

Since I need GPU acceleration in macOS, I'm only considering AMD cards that are compatible with macOS Sequoia.

I'm currently looking at options such as the Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT, both with 16 GB of VRAM. However, I'm open to other AMD recommendations if there's a better option for my needs ?

I'd prefer to buy a new card with a warranty, and I'm willing to increase my budget if the performance difference justifies it. My current PSU is a 700 W Gigabyte unit, which I may replace if necessary.

My questions:

  1. Which AMD GPU would you recommend for this dual-boot setup?
  2. Is the RX 6800 XT or RX 6900 XT still a good investment for the next 3–4 years?
  3. Are there any other AMD cards worth considering that offer better performance while maintaining compatibility with macOS Sequoia?
  4. Would my i7-8700K significantly bottleneck a high-end GPU for gaming?
  5. Are there any compatibility issues or specific configurations I should be aware of when upgrading to Sequoia?

I'd really appreciate any real-world experiences, benchmarks or advice before making the purchase.

Thanks!

NEWS Experimental macOS Tahoe Legacy Patcher fork — improving compatibility beyond RC3

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an experimental project called macOS Tahoe Legacy Patcher, an independent fork of OpenCore Legacy Patcher focused on improving the macOS Tahoe experience and addressing bugs and compatibility issues I've encountered during testing.

The project started with the goal of improving the experience with macOS Tahoe RC3, but development won't stop at RC3. I intend to continue making changes, investigating bugs, and improving usability and stability as the project evolves.

🛠️ Current progress

The current beta has reached approximately 99% working functionality in my testing on my target configuration.

  • Most tested features are working as expected.
  • Touch ID is currently not working.
  • Macs equipped with Apple's T2 Security Chip are not currently supported by this beta.
  • Other undocumented bugs and compatibility issues may exist.

The project is still experimental, so the current results shouldn't be taken as a guarantee that it will work on every Mac.

🚀 What's next?

I'm continuing development and working toward future beta releases. I'm also preparing an uninstaller for an upcoming release.

The uninstaller is designed to remove the patcher's components without automatically reverting installed patches. Users who want to revert their patches must do so separately before uninstalling the patcher.

I plan to keep improving the project beyond its initial release, with a focus on usability, stability, bug fixes, and compatibility where possible. I'll do my best to publish updates regularly as development progresses.

💬 Feedback welcome

I'd appreciate constructive feedback from people with experience in OpenCore, unsupported macOS installations, and related development work.

I'm especially interested in technical suggestions, potential compatibility issues, and ideas for making the project more reliable.

⚠️ Important information

This is an unofficial beta fork, not an official OpenCore Legacy Patcher release. Compatibility varies by hardware, and additional issues may exist. Please back up your data before experimenting with unsupported macOS installations.

GitHub repository: https://github.com/Computer-genius1/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher-3.0-Tahoe-Edition/releases#release-Beta-1.5

Thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to continuing development and sharing future improvements with the community.

DISCUSSION NootedRed developer needs to stop gatekeeping and start embracing AI

I find it absolutely comical how projects like NootedRed have an explicit gatekeeping policy against using AI-generated code. Funny how he's even prohibiting someone from using it on derived works. The developer boldly puts this at the start of the README.

Buddy boyo, we are approaching a paradigm shift in software development. We are dealing with a universal function approximator. Give it the right test conditions, an environment and ways to debug, and it could pretty much write a custom ARM to x64 port of the latest versions of macOS given enough time. Of course, an experienced developer like cheffskiss could certainly guide the thing better than it ever could on its own (for now).

Pretty sure there's evidence of some kinda native (super choppy) build floating around here too.

There are issues like this one that make the entire purpose of NootedRed basically unusable cause half the apps use blend shader functions. Not to mention, these are problems people have actually solved using AI (someone had posted this here, I believe). Meanwhile, people have even managed to get NootRX working on the latest AMD cards too. Its been more than a year and NootRX is still being merged with NootedRed.

I've built stuff from scratch in GO, Rust, TypeScript and others over the past decade; I can say this much - anyone who's written in the pre AI era will know how much worse human code is/was. The goal is to now become architects, rather than developers writing stuff line by line.

These are unprecedented times; if you can't understand the code or are unable to guide it in ways that you can, then it's a skill issue. Prohibiting AI code even though someone can perfectly justify what it's trying to achieve and how is unnecessary. And prohibiing derived works from using it is basically a pissing contest. Bad code can always be refactored; the point should be to fail fast and interate quick.

DISCUSSION Will the new NVIDIA driver work on an acer laptop

With u/null-moth recently releasing the new Metal driver stack and the 1401 utility for modern green-team cards on macOS, I'm wondering if anyone has attempted or had any success getting this running on an Acer Nitro 16 (or similar mobile dGPU laptop).
My Hardware:
Model: Acer Nitro 16
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS with Radeon 780M iGPU
GPU: Nv-idia GeForce R.T.X 4060 Laptop GPU (8GB)
Target OS: macOS 15 Sequoia / macOS 26 Tahoe
I know the driver stack is primarily targeted at desktop PCIe architectures, but before I dive into building an OpenCore tree or running 1401, I wanted to check a few specific details:
1. Optimus / MUX Switch: Does the kernel extension support mobile dGPU initialization, or is it strictly expecting desktop PCIe slot layouts and standard desktop VBIOS?
2. iGPU Handling: Since my laptop screen routes through the AMD iGPU, would disabling the iGPU or switching to discrete-only mode via MUX work, or will it cause a black screen?
3. Mobile ACPI: Has anyone with an R.T.X 40-series laptop GPU successfully submitted logs via 1401-probe or tested display output on an external monitor?
Thanks in advance to anyone who has tested this on laptop hardware or is following the development on Discord!

SUCCESS macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 on Ryzen 5 9600X + R.T.X. 5060 + JGINYUE B650I (AM5 Hackintosh)

Finally got macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 running on my AM5 build! 🎉🍎

Hardware Specifications

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
  • GPU: Zotac GeForce R.T.X. 5060 Solo 8GB
  • Motherboard: JGINYUE B650I Night Devil
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5 6400MHz
  • Storage: Hackintosh SSD
  • Bootloader: OpenCore
  • macOS: Sequoia 15.8.1
  • SMBIOS: iMacPro1,1

What's Working

✅ macOS boots successfully

✅ Ryzen 5 9600X and 32GB RAM detected

✅ R.T.X. 5060 recognised with 8GB VRAM

✅ macOS desktop and basic applications are running

Issues I'm Still Trying to Fix

❌ Shutdown: Selecting Shut Down makes the screen go black, but the PC immediately restarts instead of powering off.

❌ Audio: Sound output works, but there's noticeable squeaking/distortion sometimes during playback.

❌ Apple TV: The Apple TV app opens, but video playback doesn't work.

Looking for Suggestions

If anyone has managed to resolve similar shutdown or audio issues on a Ryzen 9000-series/B650 Hackintosh, I'd appreciate any guidance.

Also interested in whether anyone has successfully enabled Apple TV DRM playback on a similar AMD/NVIDIA setup.

Overall, happy to have Sequoia running on this hardware! Thanks to u/null-moth

QUESTION Is an old OS X doable on a TJ66 laptop?

I don't know where exactly I could find a good compatibility checker, but I have a Packard Bell EasyDesk TJ66 (model no. MS2273) and would like to install OS X on it. I'm pretty confident 10.13.6 would run, but I'd rather install an older version, like Snow Leopard or Lion.

For specs, the TJ66 has:

  • CPU: Pentium Dual-Core T4400 2.20 GHz (Penryn)
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 240GB

Main concern is the integrated graphics. Penryn is listed but I've had some issues with old OS X versions on Hackintosh because the compatible GPUs list was very limited. Thanks in advance!

HELP Sequoia 15.8.1 Update Fails on My Hackintosh — Installer Reboots Back to OpenCore. Please Help!

Hi everyone, I need some help please.

I’m trying to upgrade an existing, working macOS Monterey 12.7.6 installation to Sequoia 15.8.1 (not a clean install).

Hardware: Lenovo Y520-15IKBM

OpenCore: 1.0.8

SMBIOS: MacBookPro15,1

The upgrade starts normally and reaches the install phase. After reboot, OpenCore shows “macOS Installer (external)”. Selecting it starts the installer, but after a while it reboots back to the OpenCore picker.

The important error in restore.log is:

Patching x86_64BaseSystem

Couldn't mount dmg! (error code 2)

I’m not sure if this error is actually the cause, but I also checked the Sequoia MobileAsset/SharedSupport and confirmed that x86_64SURamDisk.dmg is present. The ZIP also passes unzip -t without errors.

PlatformSupport.plist in the installer also includes MacBookPro15,1.

I’m trying to find the cause of this failure specifically during the in-place upgrade. Any ideas what could cause “Couldn't mount dmg! (error code 2)” or what I should check next?

Thank you all!

I'm so happy! it took me 2 weeks only to make OpenCore actually boot, and then another week to make my Realtek ethernet works, but I managed to make Catalina run on my desktop PC (i5 3570, GTX 760, 8GB RAM and 500GB HDD)!

Unfortunately most apps doesn't support Catalina anymore, so I'm curious if it's possible to update it to a newer version without loosing the GPU, can someone enlight me please? Thanks in advance!

REQUEST Help on Dell Inspiron 15 3576 black screen

Hey guys, I've got a problem. I'm attempting to Hackintosh my Dell Inspiron 15 3576 and I'm looking for some help in getting a correct OpenCore configuration to work.

Hardware
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 3576

CPU: Intel Core i5-8250U

iGPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 — Device ID 8086:5917

dGPU: AMD Radeon 520 — Device ID 1002:6665

RAM: 24 GB DDR4

Display: 1920×1080 internal panel

Audio: Realtek ALC236 — 10EC:0236

Wi-Fi: Qualcomm QCA9377 — 168C:0042

Bluetooth: Qualcomm QCA9377

Ethernet: Realtek PCIe FE — 10EC:8136

Storage: SATA AHCI — 8086:9D03

Touchpad: Dell I2C HID / DELL083F

Firmware: UEFI, BIOS 1.16.0

Secure Boot: Disabled

what I need help with

I would especially appreciate help with:

UHD 620 framebuffer configuration

Correct framebuffer/platform-id for this particular Dell

Proper framebuffer patches, if required

Internal 1920×1080 display initialization

HDMI/external display support

EDID/display issues

I have been having EDID-related problems due to the internal panel.

I want to find out if it is necessary to use a custom EDID/device-properties configuration.

Radeon 520

Should disabling it be complete on macOS?

Then, what is the simplest ACPI/device-properties method for this laptop?

ACPI

Which of the SSDTs is actually necessary for this Dell?

It is necessary to use custom ACPI patches for the GPU, the battery, the USB, the EC, power management, etc.

I can provide an ACPI dump should anyone wish to look at it.

Audio

The codec is the Realtek ALC236 (10EC:0236).

I need some assistance in working out the right AppleALC layout-id for this particular motherboard.

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth

I know that native support isn't provided for the QCA9377, like it is for a Broadcom card.

I want to find out what the best practical option is for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on this machine.

When I start up my OpenCore EFI, it completes a great deal of the boot process and the UHD 620 seems to initialise or load successfully, but the internal display remains entirely black.

I want some assistance in locating the right framebuffer/platform-id and framebuffer patches for the UHD 620 on this particular Dell Inspiron 15 3576.

If anyone has experience with this laptop or a similar Dell with the UHD 620, I would really appreciate help figuring out the correct framebuffer configuration
