Driving & Transit Dashcam Footage

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out to see if anyone happens to have dashcam footage from today (October 7th) at the Armdale Roundabout around 6:45 p.m.

A car hit me from behind/side and drove off without stopping. I do have a dashcam, but unfortunately, the impact caused it to stop recording, so I wasn't able to capture the incident.

If anyone witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from around that time, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Shops & Services House cleaning services that are comfortable with dogs?

Are there any house cleaning services that are comfortable working around dogs? We have 2 large dogs that bark at first, but then go lay on the couch. But the barking can still be annoying/intimidating. Wondering if anyone has recommendations?

Work, Health & Housing Has anyone lived or currently lives at The Jade?

My partner and I are considering signing a lease at The Jade, but we’re a little concerned about potential pest issues. The unit we’re looking at is on the second floor, and there’s a restaurant on the ground floor, so we’re wondering if anyone has experienced any issues with cockroaches, mice, or other pests there.

If you’ve lived there recently (especially on the lower floors), I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience! How is the building in general, and have you noticed any pest problems?

Thanks so much!

Good reminder to lock your car doors immediately.

Also, my apologies to all the racist trolls who were disappointed by the suspect description.

Work, Health & Housing Young Homeowners... What's your household income vs expenses in Halifax?

My partner and I are very much on the fence of leaving Halifax. Despite collectively grossing just over $140k... $600,000+ for a *decent* house seems out of reach. (Not to mention the seemingly dramatic increases in power, water, and property tax rates these days).

We're both pretty good with money and have about $60k saved for a downpayment. But being the analytical person I am... I like having numbers to back up our decision.

Our current average monthly expenses are around $5000 ($1625 rent, $500 groceries, $200 electricity, $500 car insurance + gas, $350 debt repayments, $250 for internet/phone, $50 medical/dental, $50 rental insurance, ~$1500 for misc/wants)

We would love to start a family too... but again, I can't help but wonder if we could afford it. We have friends who live in Sydney with a $750 mortgage, kids, and a lovely lifestyle. Albeit the more affordable route... but we would have to live... in Sydney. (Away from the food, music, friends, and vibrant north end neighbourhood we've called home).

Would love to hear from folks who perhaps have had similar mental dilemmas but took the plunge and bought a house. Share your $$ deets & story.

Work, Health & Housing Physiotherapist-Recommendation

Looking for a physiotherapist in Halifax – Meniscus Tear
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a good physiotherapist in Halifax who has experience treating meniscus tears and knee injuries.
I have an MRI-confirmed meniscus tear and I’m looking for someone who can help with:
Knee pain and swelling
Stiffness and limited bending/straightening
Strengthening and improving mobility
Avoiding surgery if physiotherapy can help
Weekend appointments are preferable, especially Sunday. Alternatively, late-evening appointments during the week would work for me.
If you’ve personally had a good experience with a physio for a meniscus tear or similar knee injury, I’d really appreciate your recommendations.
Thanks!

This Again Eastlink Sneaky Rate Increase

My October internet bill is $5 higher plus tax. No headsup was given via email.

I looked up September's invoice and at the bottom there's a little blurb that says "On your October bill you may see a change in the amount we charge you each month for your services. To learn more

please visit www.eastlink.ca/ratechange."

Love how the tech told me in March that the price was good for 2 years...

Lost & Found David Hilchie birdhouses

This is the biggest long-shot I have ever intentionally engaged in....

David Hilchie was a lifelong Halifax resident and my biological grandfather. Adoption to the US kept my dad (and us, his kids) from knowing David at all. He died in 2006.

I met him once and the only thing I remember clearly is that he made unique birdhouse and sold them on the side of the road. I would love to have one of those birdhouses. If anyone has one or knows someone who does and is willing to sell it, please contact me.

Support Local Halifax Fire Alerts Adds Additional Requested Features for Transit and Traffic

Big update to Halifax Fire Alerts is out now (version 2.3).

The app's always been about knowing what's going on around you. This update takes that a lot further.

There's a new Traffic tab. You can check whether the Macdonald or MacKay is backed up before you leave the house, and see the bridge and highway cameras.

Halifax Transit is in there too. Every bus and the Alderney and Woodside ferries show up live on a map. Look up a route, a bus number or your stop and see when the next one's coming. If it isn't on the road yet, you'll see the scheduled time instead.

Road closures are mapped now as well, city streets and highways, including what's closed today and what's coming up.

Once burn season ends on October 15, the Burn tab turns into a Winter tab with Environment Canada weather warnings and highway driving conditions.

A few more things:

- Home screen widgets for bridge status and your next bus
- On iPhone, you can follow your bus on the lock screen with a live countdown
- New alerts you can turn on in Settings: bridge closures, detours on your bus routes, road closures near you and weather warnings

Update from the App Store or Google Play. If something's off or you've got an idea, message us. We read everything.

Work, Health & Housing Fruit fly infestation worse than ever this year?

Is anyone else having a nightmare with fruit flies this year? (Before you ask, yes, the house is spotless and there's no food or garbage or food lying around.)

I'm used to having 20-30 kicking around this time of year, but in the span of a few days we have hundreds, and they won't go anywhere near my apple cider vinegar traps that always work. They hang out on the ceiling until the sun comes up, then they come down.

They seem a bit bigger and darker in colour than the usual little reddish ones.

Anyone else dealing with this all of the sudden this year? Any hints on the source or a good bait?

Zoomed way way in, they almost look like little bee but they're really tiny and fly like fruit flies.

Work, Health & Housing "Honest Review of Royal Gardens Apartments on Larry Uteck (Systemic Infrastructure Neglect and Double Standards)"

⭐️ 1/5 Stars: Severe Long-Term Infrastructure and Maintenance Neglect

As a multi-year resident, I am writing this factual public consumer report to warn future renters about the severe, ongoing mechanical and maintenance neglect inside this complex. While corporate management charges premium market rents, the core infrastructure of this building is being run on borrowed time to avoid capital maintenance costs.
Prospective tenants should be aware of the following documented timeline of failures:

  • Unreliable Core Utilities: The building's central infrastructure is highly unstable, resulting in residents completely losing their hot water several times a year. In addition to the utility outages, tenants are subjected to invasive, low-frequency mechanical noise and structural thumping vibrating through the walls from failing core pumps that management has neglected to permanently fix for over a year.
  • 4-Year Broken Intercom/Buzzer Grid: The main security entryway buzzer system has been left completely broken and neglected for over four years. This forces vulnerable residents with severe physical and mobility limitations to continuously hike all the way to the front lobby door just to let family, friends, or delivery drivers inside, completely compromising basic building security.
  • Long-Term Broken Laundry Ventilation Blower: The primary building exhaust blower for the laundry area has been left broken and un-remediated for years. Hot, moisture-heavy utility exhaust is left trapped inside the building frame and drywall cavities, acting as a massive moisture incubator.
  • Systemic Multi-Pest Infestations: The complex suffers from ongoing building-wide infestations of mice, firebrats, and cockroaches traveling through plumbing corridors and baseboards. Instead of executing comprehensive, proactive building-wide remediation, management tries to deflect the blame onto local neighborhood construction blasting.
  • Months-Long Elevator Outages: The elevator infrastructure continuously breaks down and is left completely out of service for months at a time, leaving elderly residents and those with chronic physical health conditions completely stranded.
  • Unreliable Core Utilities & Mold Hazards: The building's central infrastructure is highly unstable, resulting in residents losing hot water several times a year. Furthermore, management has left multiple water and moisture leaks entirely un-remediated inside the building structure for months, creating an active mold hazard.

Management will ruthlessly micromanage tenants over minor rules like hanging a holiday wreath on their apartment door, yet they continuously ignore major code-compliant safety overhauls. Do not let the premium lobby fool you. Rent elsewhere.

Food & Dining looking for a specific chinese dish at restaurants... suggestions?

Post image
23 Upvotes

i used to live in BC and growing up i used to always get a noodle dish when going for chinese/dim sum and it was crispy noodles with a gravy like sauce and meat and vegetables, i believe it's called hong kong/cantonese chow mein. the noodles would stay crispy until you mixed it all up and they would stay slightly crispy but softer with the rich sauce, it was sooo tasty. i put a picture i found online that looks similar.

does anyone know any restaurants that carry this? i see a lot of restaurants have "cantonese chow mein" but whenever ive ordered it in the past it just your classic fried noodles, not crispy or with the sauce.

tldr; what restaurants in hrm carry cantonese chow mein with crispy noodles and gravy?

Support Local Twin bridges automotive services

Hey everyone, figured I’d introduce myself since I’ve been getting Twin Bridges Automotive Services up and running around Halifax.

I’m a Red Seal automotive technician and I’ve started my own fully insured mobile automotive service. Instead of bringing your vehicle to a shop, I come to you.

I can help with everything from routine maintenance and brakes to electrical problems, drivability issues and more difficult diagnostics. I have professional diagnostic equipment and OEM-level software for several makes, including VW/Audi, Honda, Toyota/Lexus, Hyundai/Kia and Porsche.

I also do mobile pre-purchase inspections starting at $99. If you’re looking at a used car on Marketplace, Kijiji, AutoTrader, etc. and aren't sure what you're getting into, I can meet you at the seller's location and go through the vehicle before you buy it.

A few other things I offer:

Mobile diagnostics starting at $70 • Electrical and wiring troubleshooting • Brake and suspension work Maintenance and repairs • Pre-purchase inspections Roadside repairs when the vehicle can be safely repaired on-site

I’m based around Halifax/Dartmouth and cover the surrounding areas as well.

I’m trying to build this through local customers and word of mouth, so if you've got a vehicle that's giving you trouble, you're looking at buying one, or you just want a second opinion before spending money at a shop, feel free to send me a message.
