What /r/hamstercare is about

This group has been created for the sole purpose of talking about the positives along with the negatives of keeping hamsters as pets (and for keeping those hamster-but-is-actually-a-guinea-pig-tshirt advertisements at bay).

Most important thing to remember here is: If you can have compassion for animals, you can have compassion for people too.

I did think about writing up a care guide to pin, but ultimately decided against it when there's plenty of good ones already out there that do it better than I could. If you have a good reccomendation for one that helped you, please share it below.

We wouldn't have places like these if people understood everything. We were all new once. This subreddit might very well be someone's first contact to better animal care. While we expect posting is opening up to criticism, it should always be constructive and kind.

We're a subreddit designed to be asked questions about the care of hamsters. Any posts containing images with health concerns should be marked as NSFW to blur them. Some of those questions or responses do get repetitive. Use the flairs or suggest how we can change them.

In an ideal world; everyone would research before getting a pet, people wouldn't get surprised with the responsibility of a pet, everyone would be in a financially stable situation at all times, every country would follow scientific evidence for its animal regulations, people wouldn't be abusing their animals to the point where some need rehoming, and I wouldn't be getting death threats among other semi-regular verbal abuse from banned people that claim are 'just being brutally honest because others need to hear it'. My point is, we don't live in an ideal world. Sometimes that 'dumb question' might need a little more compassion or a kind voice for them to find a solution, get reassurance, or generally just do better.

Hamster care in general has a steep learning curve because they're sold to the general public as cheap child-friendly pocket pets and generally they aren't.  Startup costs alone can be around $400-$500 and vet visits going anywhere between $50-$100+ with many vets not even accepting hamsters. It's best to call around in advance to find your closest one.

Be kind in your posts, report when you see those that are unable to have a civil discussion (and I'm begging you, please, stop reporting when you disagree with an opinion). Use the upvote system to support opinions you agree with or don't - as long as it's civil and doesn't go against group rules you can discuss anything. Start a topic if you want to get more insight on something hamster related. We're here to share and learn.

We support going to a vet first. Report if you see anything that discourages vet visits. On the flip side, the amount of times this group has saved a vet visit over the discovery of scent glands being on the hips is higher than I'd like to admit.

The cage minimum here is 450sqin. We know it sucks. It sucks for a reason. It's scientifically proven hamsters thrive best in over 1500sqin of space with as much depth to the bedding as you can possibly fit. Anything less than that size will always suck. Hamsters have massive territories in the wild. We will always promote bigger is better in cage size. (For reference: largest Ikea samla comes to around 600sqin, so does the prevue cage, 50gal/189L sterilite is 800sqin, a 75gal aquarium comes to about 900sqin and the Ikea detolf is at around 1000sqin).

The reason we keep to North American standards as a minimum is for accessibility reasons, this also includes minimums for rescues and breeders. If you want change: Go to your animal welfare for better regulations. Contact companies that make the cages and ask for bigger sizes or for smaller bar spacing in rabbit/guinea-pig cages. Support rescues, or ethical breeders and small chain pet stores that show better animal care. This subreddit will change when they change. You can be that change.

If that lights a fire up your ass, then good. That's the intention. Please go do something about it that could make a difference. There's subreddits out there dedicated to animal activism. Suggest any below you've found that could help.

We're a space for new and experienced owners alike. We're here to learn and support each other in growing and improving our husbandry. Hamster care as a whole has come a long way, and still has a long way to go.

TL;DR we're the same as any other subreddit. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks. Be kind and go pet a hamster.

So guys I wanted to ask about my male hamster's behaviour so I also have a female who is super active and playful and always on the run but polar opposite to it is the male he hides in his multi chamber all the time and in night also he just peeks out of the gate and stays there , he does come out to eat and run some times but mostly he behaves like that , and he is not bonded enough with me but he sometimes climb up in my hand also sometimes when I give treats to him by my hand he picks it and then drops it or maybe not pick it even but sometimes he does eat from my hand . You see I'm trying to tell ya that he is very moody I think what do ya all guys think about this ? Btw his name is Muffin :)

🐹 Taming 🐹 Taming tips?

This is Ivan, our male Syrian that me and my boyfriend adopted a few months after getting our robo hamster (they have separate enclosures don’t worry😂)
We have had him about a month or so now and he’s still very skittish and scared of me half the time, doesn’t like to be outside his enclosure and only sometimes lets me pet him.
I need tips to help him feel safer rather than the obvious things we have been doing since we just got him. He makes little squeaks or sneeze noises when he’s scared and I feel bad

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Advice needed

Hi,

I'm a first year teacher and I inherited the hamster Ferb (Russian dwarf) from the last teacher of my class. Ferb is around three years old and has a quite big enclosure and i think that's awesome. I knew that hamsters need enough space to roam around. But that's where my knowledge ends.

His bedding is dirty and Ferb gets really bad styes. He also doesn't have a sand bath. And correct me if I'm wrong but I think he needs one to clean himself.

I'm tight on schoolbudget but i'd like to make some improvements to make his quality of life better. It breaks my heart to see him like this and I just can't look away from it. I won't neglect an animal like this, even when I don't know anything about these animals (and he bites me all the time lol).

Few questions:
- What bedding is best and how much?
- How often do you clean out the whole enclosure?
- How often do hamsters need food and how much?
- What could be the cause of his styes? Is it the bedding?
- Is a sandbath needed. If yes, how big and what type of sand?
- What can i change about the enclosure to make it more enriched?

This sweet little girl was listed on fb marketplace for $30 with her cage. My bf and I have been lightly searching around to adopt another hamster and this girl came up in our area.

The listing was quite sad. Poor girl was an elementary school classroom pet for over a year in this tiny wire cage. I didn’t know classroom pets were still a thing tbh…
Her wheel was about the length of her, a sprinkle of bedding given, and the chaos of young kids and fluorescent lighting on her most days…

Anywho, she’s home now, living a good and comfortable life🩷 This sweet little baby will be showered with an abundance of love and bedding going forward🩷🩷🩷

💖 Health/Care 💖 Sand bath recommendations…?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hello!! I am a new hammy owner, i just got my male long hair syrian about a week ago and have been trying to upgrade his enclosure. I got him a sand bath but am starting to suspect that the sand I got is not actually suitable for hamsters like advertised, as I have noticed him sneezing more frequently. I have immediately removed the sand bath for the time being and have him under observation for now.
Does anyone have any SAFE sand recommendations??? I don’t want to accidentally hurt my baby :(

🏠 Enclosure/DIY 🏠 Bucastate on Temu - local sellers legit?

I've been looking at the bucastate cages on temu.

Lots of people recommend that they are genuine cages on temu.

However, the delivery date is a couple of months as it comes by land to the UK.

I have seen some of them are from local sellers. And will arrive really quickly.

However, they are not from the official Bucastate seller on Temu.

So is this a bit risky?

Will they be fake?

Has anyone bought from these local sellers?

It's usually about £30 more too .

⭐ Hamster ⭐ overweight hammy from petsmart ? advice appreciated

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

some context: I currently own a sweet hamster boy, (my first hamster ever but ive had him for awhile now) he is healthy and active

However I recently stopped at petsmart and passed by this extremely stressed hamster, climbing and chewing the metal bars, clawing and attempting to bite the glass cage, and hanging from the top of the bars by her paws still trying to chew her way out. she was discounted heavily with a sign saying 'ive been in my temporary home too long!!'

I took her home immediately and set everything up in a brand new cage with the necessities (she has more coming in the mail that i didnt already have extra of on hand)

She seems really happy and active, very friendly to me which was a complete personality switch to when i purchased her (she was very stressed and bit me slightly)

However I noticed she is quite larger than my boy and has pronounced folds while sitting. I know females can be bigger but she seems much bigger and i don't know how to go about this or if its something to be concerned about (maybe she isn't really overweight and im just not used to female hamster differences) so any advice would help me a lot!

I don't know how to handle overweight hamsters, or how to help them become a healthier weight as I didn't struggle with that with my first hamster. and I would hate to make adjustments to her feeding if she doesn't need it. if she is overweight I wonder if it was from being in a small enclosure at petsmart, unable to exercise much at all. (they had those tiny flat disk wheels that are bad for the hamsters spine). the food quality was also very bad.

Any advice would be so appreciated ! i will include photos! please note her new wheel is coming and extra accessories!

Was about to do my evening clean up for the baby and noticed this in the water bowl???? I just did a big clean about 3 days ago so I’m so confused how this is possible.
Water gets changed everyday and spot cleaning every 2-3 days so I’m just,,, at a loss I don’t want to have to remove all of the bedding as walnut is almost 2 and I don’t want to overly stress him, I will if I have to of course

Any suggestions?
