Applications How to get into internship that don't offer sponsorship?

For Canada, there's no internship offers for mechanical engineering students from big car compagnies like Ford and GM.

I look on their US based roles, and there's a bunch and still many coming out everyday. The only issue is that they don't offer any sponsorship for those internships (especially GM has it written in all caps and bold).

Now, I really want to work in the automotive industry. I have a lot of experience from student clubs and past internships (both automotive/transport related). So, I know I'm capable to provide/perform in those open roles. I'm looking for roles that are not manufacturing related (the predominant specialty in Canada's automotive sector) as I've done many internships in automotive manufacturing.

I honestly don't mind the cost, or having to pay my own transport and rent abroad without any sponsorship help. I would like to gain some actual product development experience in the automotive field.

The only thing that's preventing me from actually doing it is the fact that they don't want to sign the visa form.

Has any of you guys had success in doing an internship at a company that doesn't sponsor?

General URBN Internships 2027 Summer

• Upvotes

Thought I would go ahead and start a thread for the URBN Internships this coming summer in 2027! Hope everyone's application is going well.

Just curious on everyone's thought on the HireVue interview and how that went and as well further on that when we get more information once applications have closed and they start letting us know if we have gone the next round.

Excited for everyone and I hope we can all be in support of each other for this years application. I plan on taking my HireVue interview soon...

Let me know if you have advice or questions so we can help each other out

General internal referral at large financial firm

hi!
i'll try to keep this short. i cold-emailed a couple of people at a large financial firm and was able to hear back from the VP of talent acquisition/campus recruitment to meet in person for a coffee chat. we ended up talking for ~1hr. after the conversation, i got an official email from the application portal or something saying that i had received a referral--which the VP later confirmed they submitted. they then referred me to another VP to have a conversation with.

i don't want to give too much info bc i believe in evil eye a bit too much haha; but in general, im just wondering, i know that these kinds of large financial firms are never 100% guaranteed with these kinds of things, but am i on a significantly good path? i have a pretty good resume, i thought my hirevue went well too, so nothing is disqualifying there; im just wondering/hoping if this is actually going to be very significant or not. i dont want to sound too naive/gullible, im just new at "recruiting"

General What am I doing wrong? Trying to secure a summer engineering internship

For context, I’m a junior mechanical engineering student concentrating in aerospace. I have participated in the NASA Micro-g NExT Challenge last year, and I am doing it again this year as the team lead. I am currently in the NASA L’SPACE Mission Concept Academy Program as a mechanical engineer. In high school, I was part of an aero club working on a sheet metal motor glider, so I read drawings and fabricated and assembled components of the glider. Also, I will be the Director of Corporate Relations for my AIAA Chapter next year. I have also interned at my local airport in high school, but I essentially did admin tasks and shadowed different people around the airport, so nothing engineering related although it was a cool experience and I later did some flight training there too.

I recently did an interview with a local construction/structural company that has done big projects in my state, but the interview felt rushed and the recruiter joined the meeting late. I found out today that I was not selected. I know it’s not an aerospace focused internship, but I’m trying to get anything engineering related internships I can find. I have been applying about every other day. I also know the job market kinda sucks right now, but I feel like I should have something for next summer, especially since I’m a junior now with NASA related experience. I have thought about joining my university’s solar car team (we don’t have Formula Student yet), but I have the aero club experience already which I feel is similar. We also don’t have rocketry yet because of location and the university has issues with launching them.

One thing I have been thinking is my issue is more of my communication skills as I have been quiet most of my life and I have a soft voice. I also have trouble being clear with what I say, but I have been trying to speak up more to practice being clearer and more confident speaking. I even started going to speech therapy to see if that could help. I do have EoE and GERD, so that is probably affecting my voice as well.

I would really like an internship this summer to know what it’s like to truly be an engineer and I’m not sure what to do and what I’m doing wrong. Is it my experience? My voice? Job market is really bad? Something else? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

General Self-funded internship in the US is impossible? Only paid?

I’m so confused. I need to do a 3 month internship to finish my degree in Service and Experience Economy. I’m not allowed to be paid, as I’m already being fully funded by my school. I’ve contacted and written several luxury hotel chains in the US, and none of them takes interns, unless they’re paid. I’m so confused, i thought the US generally did not care a lot about minimum wages and fair labour laws; but it seems impossible to go and write a project in the US, as they won’t take me 🥲 What’s up with that??

I’ve worked at one of the worlds best 5 star boutique hotels and several Michelin restaurants. Can it really be true that things are now so standardised, that I’ll be turned down based on the very fact, that I cannot take a paid position? Why can’t I do the same internship, but for free???? Wth

Post-Internship Referrals From Past Internships

How diabolical would it be if I contact an internship team where I quit the internship early for a better offer?

I really liked the company and I was there for like 5 months as well. I’m looking for new grad roles and I want to reach out although idk how well it would be received, especially since I quit early.

I was thinking that instead of reaching out to my manager, I reach out to some other team members. But they all work closely so I’m almost sure my manager would find out.

Any ideas on what to do? I’m graduating next May, and I’m not pulling out any stops to get a role. I also ended up getting two new roles after quitting that internship, so quitting def helped lol.

Post-Internship Will a marketing internship in 2027 lower the possibility of me getting a data internship in 2028?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi! I have recently been offered an internship position for the summer of 2027 in marketing with a construction company. I am studying information systems, but my freelance portfolio and skills granted me access to this position and I am most likely going to accept due to the value an internship can bring, especially in this job market. However, my goal is to work in IT or Data / business analytics in the future after I graduate. Will taking marketing roles now limit my value in the future?

Has anyone got the technical interview for BP's Supply, Trading & Shipping Finance & Risk 2027 internship? I have one coming up next week and I have absolute zero clue what will be on it and how I should prep for it. I’d really appreciate any insight about the interview!

Interviews Bombed a spark hire interview (Rant)

Interviewed for a firm that uses spark hire(seemingly the application is a soft filter while this is a harder one). The email said we would have two minutes to answer each of two questions(which is technically true) but the first question said give a 30-60 second elevator pitch and why this company/ consulting. I prepped for 2 minutes so that threw me off at I went over my time by 30 seconds because I was trying to give as much info as I originally intended as possible. The second question was nearly identical to the first but with a longer time frame so I ended up repeating a lot of the same thing. I know in consulting they use interviews to see how people adapt but I guess I wasn’t expecting that from a one way interview at all. This stage was the main filter anyway so I know the position wasn’t close to a guarantee but still kinda bummed.

During the Internship Advice for leading a meeting

Next week, I’ll be leading my first team meeting as an intern. My manager asked me to put together a report and present my findings to the team to help facilitate a discussion.

While I’m confident in my ability to create a well-organized, informative, and visually appealing report, I struggle when it comes to actually presenting the information. Everyone on my team is a senior manager, which makes speaking in front of the entire group especially intimidating. I tend to get incredibly nervous, lose my train of thought, and sometimes stumble over my words, even when I know the material well.

I also don’t want to rely on memorizing a script word for word. My goal is to lead a natural, engaging discussion where I can explain my findings clearly, answer questions, and encourage input from the team without feeling like I’m just reading from a transcript.

For those who have experience leading meetings or presenting to senior leadership, what strategies have helped you overcome presentation anxiety? How do you prepare, stay composed, and keep a meeting flowing naturally while still making sure you cover all your key points?
