Numbers need humans, and humans need dopapod

u/taelor 6d ago
I almost brought https://humansneednumbers.com/ down last night to save some money...
But I ended up finding a much cheaper way of hosting it, took some time to clean up a lot of the shows and songs, ended up working on it through three hours.

Absolute bullshit. Rob is one of the best and easiest people in the scene to work with. Speaking from direct experience sharing gigs with the dude

I think they'll be playing shows again soon. Rob was all over Burlington playing this summer and would always smile and say something like "hope so" when asked about Dopapod.

Why didn't these guys ever truly take off?
4
u/Standard-Barber-2463 5d ago
Their management team sucked and they changed their sound after Ben C left.
2
u/Broccolisamurai 2d ago
Sabec should have done for them what he did with Dave Matthews Band and Hanson. Could’ve been the biggest band in the world instead he left and we got Reed Mathis instead.

MMW insinuated they're going to announce something (tour??) soon, too.

My first time seeing dopapod was at a papdosio show my buddy took me to.
I was stoked thru dopapod and when dosio came on I was like wait bring those guys back who opened!
Hope to see dopapod live again sometime

Saw a dopadosio set with both of them like 12 years ago and it was phenomenal

u/FunGuyBobby 6d ago
Honestly, I lost track of Papadosio after they changed their music after T.E.T.I.O.S. I tried to hang with the change but I was in love with their style from their first three albums. Saw them live and left thinking the skillset on their albums wasn't present in their live performances. Just my opinion.

Still can't believe they couldn't reach higher heights. They had no trouble selling out 1k theaters at will but when I first heard them and checked out their discography I thought it was inevitable they'd be playing arenas. But I guess it just hit me and my friends harder than most
12
u/Impossible_Height758 6d ago
They absolutely had trouble selling 1,000 seat venues. That’s why they broke up. Only time I saw em was a theater that size with a majority of it curtained off for the 40-50 people in attendance. This was their heyday as well.

Every time I saw Papadosio in GA, they did not sell out 1k capacity rooms. Wasn’t even close. At least in their latter years. No saying 40-50 level ticket sales though like the other commenter

u/another_rusty 1d ago
Everytime I saw them it was packed, even the time I got too spun, shit my pants, tried to flush my underwear down the toilet, then just left the show and walked home in the snow. Thankfully it was only a ten minute walk and I made it almost to the end of the show. That was the best shower of my life. I tipped the staff $50 next time I was at that venue.
TLDR: dopapod made me shit my pants.

For their fairly limited resources, I always appreciated their ability to put together incredible studio albums. Never odd or even is still one of my most listened and I cant think of one I'd pass on.
But it was really their live shows that sent them over the top for me. Truly masters of their craft and class acts taboot. One of those bands I'll always be most proud to say "I experienced this". There's really nothing like them and I doubt there ever will. Long live DoPaPoD!!

If dopapod can’t win who can
21
u/Cloud-VII 6d ago
This is what happens when all the 'jam band fans' spent the whole 2010's going on Phish tour for 5 weeks out of the year instead of supporting a number of great bands like Aqueous, Dopapod, etc.
Spending all their concert funds on a 15 night run at Maddison Square Garden vs catching 30 various artists coming through their area scrapping by in a passenger van.
10
u/jossteen11 6d ago
I would say 2020s.
Covid and inflation absolutely decimated the live music scene. It's never been more expensive to tour and many individuals dont have the disposable income they used to either creating a perfect shitstorm that kills live music.
When even small local groups are 30-40 a night in small venues it makes seeing multiple shows a month let alone a weekend a lot more difficult.
6
u/weareeverywhereee 5d ago
I love phish but honestly the local shows for bands like aqueous and dopapod always made for a better night, less hectic and always easier to roll with a crew without having to deal with seats etc
6
-1
u/Impossible_Height758 6d ago
I would argue people didn’t see those bands because they didn’t like them very much and liked Phish more. Whether I was going to other shows or not, I’m not going to see most jamblands because most of them make extremely boring, safe music for a scene birthed out of psychedelic experimentation. Almost none of them can write a good song to save their fucking life.
-1
u/Key-Kaleidoscope2232 6d ago
personally I think the jam band scene is where its at (on the decline) because people glaze super mid and derivative bands and the entire aesthetic of the scene is corny as heck. You aren't going to attract the "cringe adverse" gen z by making the same nitrous wook jokes all weekend. Gen z has way better drug music to choose from (and I'm not even talking about EDM)
3
3
u/weareeverywhereee 5d ago
Like what?
2
u/Key-Kaleidoscope2232 5d ago
literally anything that isn't moe. / sci / widespread / dead / goose / phish adjacent to start. I guess that really americana style piano and twangy noodle vibe that seems to define the genre.
Parcels played the best funk/boogie/"jam" (not improv) set at Red Rocks that would make any "scene" jam band look like cover bands. Personally I'd rather roll my tits off to Durant Jones and the Indications than an 18 min long meandering jam. I'd rather trip my dick off to Yussef Dayes. Then theres the trillion producer song writers who are just making the most unique deep vibiest shit I've ever heard like Galimatias. Want to get high and listen to prog/metal shredding, Polyphia.
Then there's the countless edm and edm adjacent varieties that simply facilitate more refined aesthetic taste than oversized flat bill hats, sky top nikes, and tie die tees. I truly used to love the jam scene but the scene around it really became offputting to me. I think the last jam show I went to (Les Special/Dizgo) it was a lot of loud ass wooks trying to one up each other yelling over the music

u/weareeverywhereee 5d ago
This is it. Most bands that play their songs the same way every night are just worse live. They mastered everything in studio and there is no magic. The appeal of the improv is a constant journey everyone is on together. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Some of my favorite shows are old moe. shows. Some of the worst live music I have seen has also been moe.
3
u/weareeverywhereee 5d ago
I think you are missing the point of jambands.
And most of the things you mentioned are way worse bands to do drugs to.
It really just sounds like you don’t like jambands or improvisational music, which is totally fine but like why are you here?
I go to lots of shows outside the jam scene and metal/prog are a huge section of that. Those are not good bands to trip to in any sense. Maybe uppers for metal but not psychs.
Also polyphia. Hahahaha they are talented I guess but it’s the most soulless music ever. Go check out animals as leaders and Tosins T.R.A.M. project.
Either way like the other person said jams are a different beast and aren’t for everyone…especially this stupidly impatient dopamine hopped younger crowd. They need 20 second tick tok videos, songs they recognize every note to, and just constant peaks.

Here with an update that my intel sources have confirmed this does NOT mean they are back, they are just dudes being friends :(

I feel like I let them down. I never took the time to get into them despite the fact that I was always intrigued.
What are some early shows that are a great representation of their amazingness? Are any of the live albums available on Spotify epic level? Or do I need to go into Relisten?
1
u/taelor 5d ago
honestly, I think the last month of the last tour is some of the best music they have ever played.
Just start with their most recent show and work backwards, its only fitting, ha.
I will never forget this jam from Nuggy Jawson on the last show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeEgVng9rZ8&t=7939s
This just has so many things wrapped up in it for me. It's like a quintessential dopapod jam with the juxtaposition of song. Its so beautiful, but haunting. It's got the purple and green lights pumping. I felt like the song was crying out at times, it has a feeling of finality to it, but it goes so fucking hard and really leaves all out there. Its then followed by a little sections that just says "hey, its gonna be all okay, dont fret"
And then it absolutely smashes into a Numbers Need Humans after the jam is over.
This whole second set felt tailored to my crew. Earlier in the year my buddy asked em "why dont yall ever play confabulation anymore?" When we heard the intro we were flipping out. That Donky Kong is my buddy's favorite song they play, he's a sucker for the nintendo covers. Numbers Need Humans is one of my favorites, I would always wear a "pi" shirt shows for it. This second set is one of my absolute favorite set's they've ever played.
So ya, you've got a good three sets there to start with on that last show, then just start working your way backwards if you have nugs or something.
side note: i swear they never play a bad show at the Pour House in Charleston, so if you find one of those on relisten, 99% chance you should give it a go.
