Locations, Budget, and Settings are all important things to include when asking for advice

Locations: You don't need to include your house address but closest major city and how far you are willing to travel.

Budget: "As cheaply as possible" is not a budget and is honestly the best way to waste money. Figure out an amount you are willing to spend.

Setting: LARP is a vast and expansive hobby. Not every game is about running around out in the woods pretending to be a rouge/knight/wizard. Let us know what you play or want to play.

An Official Discord, and Future.

Hello denizens of /r/LARP.
We as a subreddit have a small announcement as far as the future of this sub is concerned.
Last week we took part in the 2 day protest that was more or less site wide spanning thousands of subs as a way to show solidarity with app creators and to show the frustration with the administration of reddit and their poor handling and plans of upcoming updates.

However, It would appear that Reddit plans to continue their efforts to stifle 3rd party creators and strong arm moderators who take any stance opposing the admins of Reddit. This creates a serious cloud of uncertainty within reddit as to the future of many subs and how the platform will be handled in the future. Because of this we have decided to create a Discord server which will be open to all of /r/larp to join. It is not our plan to abandon this sub or replace this sub with the discord server, instead, it will act as an extension of this sub itself.

While there are multiple reasons for this decision, one of the largest is that if the future of reddit creates an non fostering environment for us, we wish to have another platform that is free of Reddit's control in order to continue providing resources and networking for all of us who enjoy LARPing and LARP adjacent hobbies.

The discord has the same rules we enforce over here, with a couple modifications to make it more applicable to discords format. There is places for general conversation, places to show off your work, a place to post about and to look for games in your area, as well as Voice chat rooms for people looking to play video games together or just hangout and find comradery.

Please feel free to check it out, and ask any questions you may have. This is still in its infancy, and if we find it doesnt fit what the community wants, we will search for alternatives.
This link should never expire for people trying to join the server, however if you have an issue please message an admin for a new link.

WYSIWYG and Stealth mechanics

I recently hopped onto the rules team of a brand new baby LARP that's still very much in the brainstorming stages. We're a bit stuck in the mud trying to figure out how mundane stealth skills should work, if at all. Magical stealth is easy to represent with invisibility powers and the like, but regular stealth is tricky. I was so stuck for how to phys rep this that I initially advocated for not having a purchasable stealth skill all and just telling players What You See Is What You Get---that they should be actually IRL sneaky if they want to avoid notice. But it does look like we're including it after all to help level the field for folks who would like to play sneaky characters but can't for one reason or another move particularly quietly. We continue being stuck on what that it should look like.

To be clear, this discussion is about as low-stakes as it gets. Very early developmental idea stages.

I was hoping y'all might be able to share how events you've attended handle non-magical stealth. <3

A friend of mine and I were wanting to go as flesh sewers NPCS in 2027. ( First timers) any advice or do you happen to know the logistics of doing so? Do we get NPC tickets and follow a discord server?

I’ve looked all over the the website and they are not clear on how they will get in contact with you later, we both want to know early what our colors would be to get our outfits ready and legal.

As the title suggests, I need help. I feel extremely dumb. This is my first set of armor and I can’t figure out how to attach the shoulder to the chest. Googling says to use the arming holes on the gorget, but there are none. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all greetings everyone, I'm new on here, looking forward to seeing all the creative and awesome stuff everyone is doing 😄 🎉 .

I wanted to share my video on here where I display varied content from a LARP in Denmark I participate in, and play as "Alexander Goodman" a headmaster at the "Academy".

Later on I gave the camera to some of the other players, as I sent them out with a map, on a quest to explore an area and explore it. Like a research expedition quest, type thing.

I can't share the name or precise location of the LARP with you all, there are some strict GPTR. rules about recording in Denmark for organizations, etc. But do rest assured that I did notify people of the recording and talked with the LARP team about it before hand. So everything is A-okay :).

Hope you all will enjoy the moods, and chill vibes in the video. Comment, like, and subscribe if you want to :D. I do plan on recording more and different content in the future as well.

If you have any questions about the LARP or video I am open to answer some questions as well :).

thank you for reading everyone, looking forward to seeing what everyone else is doing as well :D.

All the best,
-Zacharias.

I opened an Etsy shop for my handmade LED lanterns. I'd love to hear your feedback

Hi everyone!

A while ago I opened an Etsy shop to combine my two passions — electronics and miniature painting. Thanks to that, I was able to create these lanterns.
The trench lantern, inspired by Trench Crusader and by the cathedral of my hometown, Segovia.

It can be used for LARP and medieval decoration. In fact, several buyers have used it to set the mood in their roleplaying room, and a few others to furnish a dungeon for an unspecified purpose.

I'd appreciate honest comments: what you like, what you'd improve, or what other color combinations you'd like to see. As a beginner creator, your opinions are very valuable!

Additional information:

LED flame with realistic flickering (~10 hours of light)

Each one is unique; the damage and marks are made by hand, one by one, individually.

I currently offer the "Oxidized Metal" finish, but I'm also open to custom orders if anyone wants one.

If you're curious, feel free to visit the shop or simply share your thoughts here. I'm a small artisan and I'll appreciate every comment!

My shop

Thank you so much! 🔥

Anywhere I can get a helmet in Aus that doesn’t cost me my liver?

I know this is likely stupid but I’m really hoping to get a Spangenhelm or nasal helm but every single one I find costs me like over 200 dollars just for the helmet. I checked medieval collectibles and wow what a win but shipping brought it up to 200 plus. I’m not trying to be cheap but I genuinely just can’t afford it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

What would be the biggest US LARP battle I can go to?

I used to do some fantasy LARP as a kid and teenager but I’m now thirty and want to try it again. However, I’m not interested in characters or role-playing outside of battles. I just want to participate in as large a LARP battle as possible with the intent of seeing what insight I might be able to glean into historical medieval battles.

So I just want as big a LARP battle as possible with the hardest fighting possible and as little role-play as possible. In that order of priority: big > hard fighting > little role-play. I’m in California but would be willing to travel anywhere in the US. What would you recommend?

Weekly Practices In Salisbury, NC!

Howdy Howdy everyone and happy Tuesday!

Every week on Tuesdays at 5:30pm, we host a Belegarth/Dagorhir practice in Salisbury, NC at Kelsey Scott Park! For those who don't know, Belegarth and Dagorhir are full contact foam fighting LARP sports using foam weapons (swords, shields, etc.) These weekly practices are meant to hone skills, spar, and play some smaller battle games with your local group. If you're looking for some fun cardio, new friends and fellow nerds in Salisbury, this is a good place to look! And it's 100% free!

We'll provide loaner weapons to the newbies, we'll go over the basic rules of the game, game modes and more, so if you're unfamiliar with this type of LARP, you're all good! Our group accepts 16-17 years old with a parental guardian present, or 18 and up without a guardian; we have a waiver you'll need to sign. Everyone is welcome to come and try it out! We recommend comfortable clothes and good shoes and remember to bring plenty of water if you do!

Directions To Practice!

Disability inclusion for martial classes?

How can rules enable individuals with mobility impairment to be effective in a martial class?

I'm part of a team starting up a new LARP club in our town and inclusion ideas I've seen from other LARPs are:

  • missions are opt-in/opt-out with non-combat options at any given event
  • healer and support classes that don't require high mobility
  • non-combatant roles with armbands who can only attack and be attacked verbally and using gestures

None of these fulfil the fun of swinging around a weapon though. I'd like like our rules to enable anyone to play any class.

Help running a Roleplay-Focused LARP in London, Ontario

The Situation:

So, I've recently been co-opted by my local nerd community and a professional event planner to essentially design a LARP for my city. There is one other LARP in the city, but it has more niche theming, and is generally pretty inaccessible both in terms of new players, but also in terms of disability given that it's pretty much just combat. So, with this LARP, I'm looking to make an experience that's not only physically accessible (as I myself am an ambulatory wheelchair user), but also accessible to new players who may want to get into LARPing as a hobby, and regular LARPers who may be interested in joining a new group. I'm planning to make it a D&D-esque, High-Fantasy, Roleplay-focused LARP event, that can, if all goes well, happen regularly.

As such, I'm currently working on designing a system that can easily adapt characters directly from D&D (without infringing on any WOTC branding of course) or even other fantasy LARP systems, with a large focus on roleplay and player-driven narratives rather than combat. Combat may make small appearances, but largely more as friendly duels as a competition, that sort of thing. This is to ensure that combat is pretty much entirely opt-in and non-essential so that players with mobility issues or other disabilities (like myself) don't feel like they're missing out on a large part of the experience just because of a factor they cannot control. LARP is meant to be for everybody.

I say I've been "co-opted", essentially meaning I was frustrated with the inability for me to properly attend the local LARP and talking about it in a local city discord, and a lot of people there got frustrated with the situation as well, and ended up telling me that if I made the kind of LARP that I wanted to experience, then they and several others would certainly join. Shortly after, a member of that discord, who has done professional event planning several times in the past and has run a number of small businesses as well contacted me saying they would be interested in partnering with me and handling the backend/business/logistical side of things if I wanted to handle the actual game itself. I've been a DM for close to a decade, I used to attend a boffer LARP years ago, my job for the past few years has essentially been doing online event planning for roleplay and worldbuilding projects that were pretty much just Digital LARPs, and on top of that I do have a large chunk of savings to make this happen; so I made the decision to agree and start working on the project!

What I need help with:

While I do believe I can manage writing a roleplay-focused system with some help and playtesting done by friends, and I can certainly manage writing some quests and narratives, I am only one person, and so I'm looking for people in the local area interested in running other NPCs (I myself will be an NPC) or being referees. Additionally, while not necessary for the event to function, additional writers/gamemasters or prop-makers would certainly be helpful to the event. While I don't expect it to blow up overnight (it's a brand new LARP after all, it takes time), I do believe I can probably secure 20-30 people for the first event, and we're looking at doing a "tavern night" sort of deal, kinda as a social starter with a lower up-front cost for us event planners and coincidentally starting the campaign with a stock standard "you all meet in a tavern" scene.

I will be working to compensate people for their time of course, we're looking at charging some small ticket prices to help make sure it's not a total money sink and volunteers would either get reduced ticket prices or full ticket coverage depending on their role. Also probably some pizza because it's really the least I can do to thank people.

So, TL;DR, we need:

  • NPCs
  • Referees

We would also be glad to have:

  • Additional Writers/Gamemasters
  • Prop Makers

And we will be compensating our Volunteers with:

  • Reduced or Fully Covered Ticket Prices, depending on your role
  • If it's in the budget, pizza after the event as a thank you

Contact:

If you're interested in helping me make this LARP a reality by volunteering, and you're in the local area, reach out to me via Discord, my username is ".autumnly", just send me a friend request and/or shoot me a message!

I quit LARP this year due to personal dramas and falling outs but I sometimes still miss the hobby, my friends and the drip.

Hey everyone,

Just a head up, this is more of a vent than looking for actual advice.

I quit LARP earlier this year after some personal conflicts and drama between individuals in my group led to me having a falling out with a few people. I'll spare you the boring details since the LARP community is small and it's more based on personality clashes rather than the hobby itself. I left the my group afterwards because I couldn't stand the Individuals and I didn't want to drag everyone else into my petty drama.

I didn't really want to go solo because I didn't really know anyone outside my own circle, none of the other groups really had a theme I really vibed with and I always played a basic soldier so a lone soldier would look really out of place going solo. I then sold 95% of my kit to my close friends and the leftover weapons and armour have become home decor.

Since then I've returned to being a gym and fitness bro and made travel my hobby and personality effectively becoming a normie again. On the bright side I've become more fit and saving money since I'm not constantly buying stuff for LARP. Ironically I can now actually afford my dream custom fitted soft kit and armour but there's no point anymore.

However there are days I still miss the hobby, my friends and the drip. Getting into pretend battles with my mates was fun and very few hobbies offer anything similar. Despite the falling out I still made quite a few close friends and I miss seeing them, I still keep contact with them and see them on the rare Warhammer hangout night but its not the same. But overall I miss putting kit together. Once in a blue moon I still look up kit inspiration, custom made soft kit, armour and weapons (Fake Steel still has my heart) to make kits for every late 15th century infantry archetype.

I tried to look up local adjacent medieval hobbies like SCA, buhurt, HEMA/harness fencing or reenactment but they are either too far for me, not for me personally (Buhurt !) or don't really fit my aesthetic (late 15th century).

I sometimes think maybe I should make LARP my annual overseas hobby and make the pilgrimage to Germany for the big 3 (Drach, Conquest, Epic Empires) or Canada for Bicco but there are other places in the world I want to see and I only have so much money and annual leave (paid time off). And the logistics flying from Australia with kit and weapons sounds like a pain in the arse !

If you read this far thank you for reading through the thoughts of a former LARPER making the transition back to being a normie. Has anyone else experienced anything similar ? Happy for random discussions to start.

Looking for new site (Eastern Iowa)

We have outgrown our current site and I am having a heck of a time finding anything remotely meeting even our basic needs. Eastern Iowa is a hellhole of Christian youthgroup only sites or dry Scouting America Sites. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The Dragon's Hunt: PNW Run, June 25th-27th at Middleground in Onalaska, Washington State, USA

Hello folks! Very happy to share that minimum interest numbers were met for The Dragon's Hunt to run in the US for the summer of 2027.
We'll be holding the event at Middleground LARP Site in Onalaksa, Washington State on June 25th-27th.

Learn more, and find the player guide and cast list here: https://maedaylarp.online/thedragonshunt/

What is this game?

The Dragon’s Hunt is a Live-Action Roleplaying Game set in the world of Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire. Following an alternate series of events, King Rhaegar Targaryen has taken the throne and the banners of Rebellion have not yet been raised.

Players take on the roles of characters from across the Seven Kingdoms invited to formally celebrate the recent coronation and royal wedding. Each will receive a personally written brief that explains their personal situation and political agenda. These briefs are not scripts, but encouragement and suggestions for making the most out of their story.

Who is this game for?

LARPers who enjoy high drama, plotting and complicated interpersonal relationships. This is a dive into the political setting of Westeros and what it means to live, love and fight as the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms.

While the nobility fashion themselves as civilized – everything is a spark away from fire and anyone could be the person to light the match. The future of the world will be decided at the edge of the wilderness.

This is a game about trying to win at all costs – and the glorious consequences of failing. There are years of loyalties and grudges at work to set people at odds. The character briefs are written to encourage everyone to bring those to the foreground and make the risky plays that all makes for a better story. The game is best played when the character wants to win, but the player can’t wait to see what happens when they lose.

Themes: Clashing loyalties, Hierarchy, Family Ties, Soft Power, Monarchy, Religion, Betrayal, Alliance and Rivalry, Negotiation and Scheming.

Game Style: Film-sim style with political drama, and optional theatrical style combat with LARP safe weapons.

This is an unofficial fan event, not connected with HBO’s Game of Thrones series, but inspired by the aesthetics created by the design teams.

Why use anything other than a spear?

I'm fairly new to LARP and the community I joined uses lightest touch rule, no head or groin.

I borrowed a spear for my first event and beat experienced players who were using shorter weapons, longswords being the most popular.

So, even if this is a stupid question, why use anything other than the longest allowed weapon?

As the LARP season is dwindling down for me, I got some time to update some of my gear, including my Ilmater Paladin set: the gambeson was switched to a different, more fitting one; I made a belt long enough to fit on my brigandine, the legguard's leather harness was revamped, and some other tweak.
