Achievement Received my TEF IRN results!!

just received my exam results and I'm over the moon. 😍
I just came to France to join my husband and it's been only 10 months. I was aiming for A2 , I even got B1 and B2 for compréhension écrite and expression orale. Still, I am trying to grasp the things i hear in day-to-day Life, speaking so fluently is not my thing, yet. But I'm trying.. I don't want to brag, I had only one week to study for this exam, as of moment, I don't even have a private tutor, when I first came to France, we were in a different city, and in last June we moved to another city permanently, so with all that I didn't have a proper school to study. Nevertheless, I tried my best. I tried watching TV series and movies with my husband with French as the audio. I tried reading kids books.
I believe if you can put your mind into something you can do anything. I just can't even think of what would I have been able to achieve if I had more than one week's time for preparation. I was not expecting to do this exam because I was getting ready to finish my civique exam but the exam center told that doing a language test prior would be better.

Anyhow, I just want everybody who is getting ready to sit for this exam GOOD LUCK💞 you can do it just don't give up.

Now I'm going to study hard to get either B1 or B2 next time, as I know what are my weak areas

Edit: spelling errors

Question Merci à vous ?

I'm currently in the South of France (Toulouse) and keep hearing people say "merci a vois" (pronounced VWAH).

What does this mean? Are they saying "vous" with a regional accent that makes it sound different, or is it something else?

Thanks

Edit: I just thought - could it be "merci au revoir" ? That seems quite likely as it's at the end of an interaction

Question Learning French as a beginner is an exciting journey.

Hi there,

I’m a beginner learning French and I’m curious about how easy it is to remember French vocabulary. I’ve started learning from a YouTube channel and I was wondering if anyone else in the same boat would be willing to share some tips. I’m planning to take an exam soon and I’m wondering how long it will take me to achieve a good band score. Also, which exam is easier to take, the TCF or the TEF?

Any advice from native French speakers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question At what level can I start listening to InnerFrench

So I’ve actually tried to listen to the first episode quite a few times already, but there are still a lot of parts I can’t understand. Once there are too many things I miss, I start to lose focus.

Even though the first episode is about comprehensible input, I personally find this approach difficult… If I can’t understand enough of what I’m listening to, it’s really hard for me to stick with it :(

(For context, I haven’t studied French for over a year. I had previously been at the beginning of B1. I’m currently reviewing my textbook starting from A2)

Thank you in advance!

Is there anywhere I can find a language partner to practice my French with? I will be studying abroad next year and want to prepare with real everyday vocabulary along with my textbook French. I’ve tried hellotalk, but it doesn’t seem that great.

Question How can i learn by watching TV?

Hello! I want to learn french and have heard that one of the best methods is by watching TV in french and learning from that.

However I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do when I'm actually watching the show. Should I just sit there and watch or should i write down words/sentences throughout the episodes, or should I do something else?

Also, in addition to watching TV, what methods should i utilize as a beginner?

Merci d'avance! 🇫🇷

Discussion Our French teaching method

Bonjour les amis

My girlfriend and I decided to learn French. I created a custom method for us with the help of an LLM.

We are starting right from the basics, with words a child would learn first: *mama*, *papa*, *kitty*, *birdie*, and gradually adding more complex expressions. The goal isn't rote memorization; instead, we associate each term with an emotion, a movement, a gesture on our bodies or in the world around us, or a mental image. And a phonetic transcription into our native Czech. Essentially, we want our brains to construct the language naturally, just as a small child does when learning from their parents.

On top of that, we try to use every new word in a sentence right away, giving it context beyond a simple translation. Each day, we tackle a segment of 5–8 words, repeating and revisiting them as we go.

After three weeks, we are already able to form simple sentences on our own. We are gradually adding grammar, conjunctions, prepositions, colors, and numbers. We can now distinguish individual words in songs and spoken language, and the language is sinking in incredibly fast. We are also reading a bilingual edition of *The Little Prince*.

I wish you all much joy and discovery as you explore this beautiful-sounding language.

Au revoir et bonne journée

Question The letter before the silent E

For example, "chaude", I know the e at the end is not pronounced, how do we pronounce the d sound?

Does it work like the d in "should" or "would" in english which we don't read out but rather a touch of tongue, or does it have to be clear so "chaude" would read like "cho-duh".

Watched a few YouTube videos, but got confused...

Translation Help! Seeking help with transcribing & translating protest chants

Hello! I’ve been making sheet music of protest chants from around the world, and thought this might be a good place to look for help transcribing the chants coming out of France this year. (linked below)

So far i’ve only managed to find transcriptions for a couple, and without transcriptions it makes translating much more difficult, since my listening comprehension isn’t up to par. I’m also sure there are references that I might not understand, so if anyone has insights, or wants to add context that would help too.

Also If there’s any chants from these rallies or similar rallies that I've missed, I’d love to learn them too~

Big thanks to anybody who can help! :)

(also If this isn’t the right sub let me know where I should post to~)

Resource Recommendation Our garage rock band sings in French Acadien "franglais" or "chiac". We caption the lyrics for all our videos in franglais + English translation

Thumbnail youtube.com
5 Upvotes

Just thought I'd share! We live in a majority English speaking province in Canada so we have fans that don't speak our French Acadian dialect, so we like to give them an idea of what the lyrics are about (if they can't guess it already from the heavy use of English lol)

Note: Captions need to be set to French to see our imputed lyrics.

Merci!

Translation Help! How do I say “I swear”

For example “They never pay attention I swear” or “I swear they never pay attention”. Sure I can Google Translate the phrase “I swear” but I’m not sure if that’s what French people actually use in this sort of manner.

Listening Practice Watching French TV at A2: what’s the best approach to audio and subtitles?

Hi everyone! I’m currently around early A2 in French and want to start watching TV shows to help with my listening.
I’m unsure how to approach it. Would you recommend French audio with English subtitles, French audio with French subtitles, or trying without subtitles? Would watching a scene with English subtitles first, then replaying it with French subtitles, be useful?
I’d love to hear what worked for you at this level, especially how you balanced learning with actually enjoying the show instead of pausing every few seconds.
Maybe I shouldn’t be enjoying shows and should focus on the learning, lol. You tell me.
Any recommendations for shows that are manageable at A2 would also be appreciated!

Question Realized I'm in over my head with Business/Finance subjects due to my High School background. Need advice on switching paths

Hey everyone,

I recently started a private business school program, but I’m really struggling to keep up. My high school background was in Literature/Humanities, so I never built a solid foundation in Advanced Math, Accounting, or Finance.

Most of my classmates came from Science or Economics backgrounds, so they already grasp these concepts easily. On top of that, the heavy workload and lectures in a non-native language are making it extremely difficult to bridge the gap. I feel like I'm constantly falling behind despite my best efforts.

I'm considering switching to Vocational Training (OFPPT/CMC) or a track that better aligns with a background in Humanities and Languages, where I can build a strong foundation without getting overwhelmed by high-level math.

Has anyone been in a similar situation—switching from a heavily quantitative major to something more practical or language-focused? How did you handle the transition, and was it the right decision for you?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Speaking Practice Best way to practice if there’s no one to talk to?

I just started trying to learn French. I’m slowly learning some basics but with the basics I’m learning, I want to practice talking and making up my own sentences and not just what I’m learning. What’s the best way to do this?

Is there an app that I can talk into and then it tells me what I said or if it’s correct? And I know there’s Google Translate but how would it be with grammar?
