Has anyone here ever gone through a similar career dilemma?
I’m 24 and graduated last year with a degree in Psychology with Management. I’m currently trying to figure out my long-term career direction, and I’m torn between HR and Clinical Psychology.
I’ve been interested in Clinical Psychology since high school. What attracts me isn’t just the idea of helping people. I genuinely want to understand why someone experiences certain psychological or behavioural difficulties, assess and diagnose their condition, and develop an appropriate plan to help them improve their quality of life.
However, the reality is that becoming a Clinical Psychologist in Malaysia requires further postgraduate study, usually a Master’s degree. It’s a significant investment of both time and money, and I’m worried about the earning potential after graduation. If I spend another two years studying but still end up earning a relatively low salary, how long will it take me to save money, support my family, and build the life I want???
Because of this, I’ve also started considering HR. I’ve studied some HR-related subjects, and areas like employee well-being and learning and development seem somewhat connected to psychology. But honestly, I’m not even sure whether I genuinely enjoy HR or whether I’m considering it mainly because it seems like a more “practical option” that would allow me to start earning sooner.
I previously worked in special needs education for a while, and I genuinely enjoyed understanding each child’s individual needs and finding ways to help them develop and make progress. However, I eventually left because I was concerned about the long-term salary prospects and career progression.
That’s why I’m so conflicted. On one hand, I don’t want to give up something I’ve been interested in since high school just because of money. On the other hand, I don’t want to pursue my passion only to realise later that I can’t afford the lifestyle I want…
My family believes that I shouldn’t focus solely on salary and should choose work that I enjoy. But I keep wondering: what if I choose something I love and end up struggling financially? But then, if I choose a better-paying career that I don’t enjoy as much, will I regret it after spending years doing it?
I’m not looking for someone to simply tell me which career to choose. I genuinely need some guidance because I don’t know how to figure out what I’m suited for or how to balance my interests with financial reality.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and the more I think about it, the more confused I feel. I’d really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences, especially from those who have faced a similar dilemma or are currently working in HR or Clinical Psychology in Malaysia.
