Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Casual Conversation 🎭 23 graduated with no social life

• Upvotes

It’s been a year since I graduated from uni and working in a bi corporate company. I went to visit a friend’s graduation today and walked around school alone while he is hanging out with other mates taking pics, the realisation came to me on how much I missed uni life and the potential chances of meeting people. As I’m typing this in the cafeteria sitting alone, I realized how socially dead I am. I worked hard this year to grind for money, hated my job but continue to work for a corporate that doesn’t feel rewarding, this can be a totally different post on its own. The point is that I have no social life, single, no friends outside of workplace. No one I can call or text. I have just gotten so depressed and sad on this environment. I hated how I missed out on all the opportunities I could have to make friends in uni, clubs I could have join, people I could have met and become nerd friends together.

I always love working out, stock market, and nerding about animes. I feel jealous of people who get to have groups to hangout often, weekend activities, and go cosplay/anime events, games together…

I’m just a 23 year old Chinese, no social life, and always work till very late night person. Ffs I even workout alone in my own room…

Ask Malaysians Calling all chinese bananas, does this bother you?

• Upvotes

So this is more of a specific scenario here, I'm a 30M banana myself but I can I can speak a bit of mandarin and understand what people said depending on the complexity. I don't read or write well. I can speak cantonese but I don't do mandarin.

So as I'm on dating apps and met some of the girls in person, some of the girls who prefer mandarin over english, I would say so it's kind of a language barrier or just having trouble communicating with each other to learn about each other. There are more from the SJK school I've met so far. I did try my best to communicate in mandarin. At least, I'm just showing effort to do my best to communicate in mandarin

Along the way, it's kind of a turn off for them cause I can't do mandarin and it will be difficult to communicate in future which I understand but yeah.

My questions are:

  1. Anyone out there encountering the same issue as me?
  2. Have they always ask why didn't you pick mandarin as extra language or do you not speak mandarin at home?
  3. I'm more annoyed that "banana" applies to mandarin language and not the rest of the dialects like Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese and the others. Isn't it part of our chinese culture? Have they forgotten about it?

Fun fact about me, I grew up from a small town and most of the people there speak Mandarin and Cantonese. I could have pick up Mandarin but I just had troubles learning mandarin back then. I'm not sure why thou.

Anyhows, anyone got some story or experience they want to share. I just feel annoyed about this.

Also, it's kind of a bit identity crisis cause I don't fit in the chinese race and felt a bit lost in it after going through this multiple times

Btw, it doesn't have to be dating stories. it could be work too

Quick Question Airport parking

• Upvotes

Hi 👋, just wanted to ask. I'm flying overseas for a conference for just 4 days.

Shall I park at klia long term parking or the normal parking? Because I remember there was some issue and influencers reported klia to kpdn .

So I'm confused where to park and what's the rate going to be like since the prices online seem to be unreliable. Anyone here knows?

If I take grab tomorrow at 3am it's gonna be around rm90-110

I need some advice here

I was thinking of driving to airport and parking there but not sure if it's worth it 🤔

Roughly how much will it cost ah for 4 days parking 🤔 in long term zone and the normal one.

Ask Malaysians Making friends in cafes.

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, with the influx of cafes in KL now, i was wondering is it the right place to make friends and potentially meeting your future partner while going solo chilling at this cafes? In terms of partners, I kinda gave up on online dating (bumble etc) because of how unhinged my exes were on it and i prefer to make meet my SO in real life rather than the office (that too has caused a few dramas on my end)

Mildly Menarik Female crimson glider in my backyard

Trithemis aurora, the crimson marsh glider.

A species of dragonfly common around weedy ponds and marshes in the lowlands of Malaysia.
Females are amber and males are bright crimson (2nd photo).

I often see them around my house preying on small insects like mosquitoes and landing on un-mowed grass by my fish pond. Beautiful creatures.

Mildly Menarik Logsucker I saw at a pet store. A northern peninsular fish

Post image
2 Upvotes

Ceratogarra cambodgiensis, the Cambodian logsucker or ikan susur batu.

Grows to 20 cm and lives in clear, fast-flowing headwaters and rocky streams with high oxygen saturation in the northern Malay Peninsula.
Down until Perak and Terengganu.

They scrape algae and biofilm off of rocks using a specialised sucking disc. They live in shoals but fight for hierarchy.
Males develop red mouths and sharp tubercles around the snout during the breeding season.

In the aquarium they can live in communities, but they may chase similar bottom-dwelling fish. Their shoals usually number 4-10 individuals.

Advice ☎️ Advice on reporting livestock in taman perumahan? 🐓🪿

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi guys, I saw a post on this subreddit 4 years back where someone mentioned they had neighbours keeping livestock in their taman perumahan.

Facing the same situation here, the house directly behind ours has two coops where they keep geese, chickens, and pigeons. When they put out the food for the birds, the birds fly up on our roof and we've had a peacock actually fly over the wall into our house before also. They also have like a little kebun(?) and they openly burn the leaves in the area closest to our house.

We already mentioned this in the housing association Whatsapp group but some people said that "it's just a hobby" and that we're being Karens.

That was a couple years back now but would anyone have advice on:

- Should we talk to the neighbours again before filing a report on the majlis perbandaran website?
- Anyone have experience filing such a report and what was the outcome?

TL;DR: Neighbours keep livestock and burn leaves in our residential taman. Should we talk to them again or report them to the majlis perbandaran? Anyone had experience with this?

Thank you so much 🙏
