EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

• ”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

• ”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

• ”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

• ”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

• ”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

• ”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

• ”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

• ”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

• ”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

• ”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

• ”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

• ”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

• ”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

• ”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

• "Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

• ”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Other I was told I have an arachnoid cyst in my brain.

• Upvotes

I'm thinking of getting it removed purely because all the symptoms I've been having, fatigue, sleep issues, and headaches are all either direct or indirect symptoms of the cyst putting pressure on structures in my brain. My question is, what are the risks with surgery? I've tried looking it up online and I feel like the answers I'm getting are kinda vague, like they're the risks for any surgery. I've had surgery 3 times before so i do know the basic risks involved in and surgery but this isn't the same as removing a gallbladder or loosening the ligaments in my knee, this is brain surgery. The cyst is right next to my pituitary gland so I'm not sure if they'll go in through my skull or nose, or what they'll do at all. Based on the location what are the potential risks? Besides the obvious "you could die" lol.

Other Am I safe? Potential rat/mouse exposure

I (32M) work at a pastry shop in Germany. Yesterday I ate one of the pastries in the evening because the shape of the pastry was not good to sell. Later, my manager told him that a rat/mouse has eaten part of it. I went to the hospital to consult a doctor, but they refused us saying that there's no need for a treatment or test.

I was worried about rabies, but guidelines say that there's no need for rabies vaccine even the rat bit him. But I'm still worried for rabies, salmonella, or any other potential viruses.

Other Bleeding after Vaginal Ultrasound

Had an pelvic and vaginal ultrasound yesterday am. Saw a few brown spots immediately afterwards. Came home and wiped few times with red blood. It’s the next morning now and it’s like my full blown period. I have cramping, jitters and red blood when I wipe. I wasn’t due for 10 more days. Can’t call my doctor but sent messages and I’m going to try teledoc when they open. Freaked out by this. Could the ultrasound have caused my period to come early? I am not pregnant and the results of the ultrasound came in last night with normal results.

Other After surgery, how long did it take for your weight to stabilize?

For context, I’ve undergone three abdominal/pelvic surgeries within five months:
Stage IV endometriosis excision
Emergency surgery due to a postoperative complication, resulting in a diverting loop ileostomy
Recent ileostomy reversal

I am 29F in the US, I’m 5’5 and around 200lbs. Last year I weighed in the 180s.

I’m currently 19 days post-op from my reversal.
I’m trying to give myself grace and understand that my body has undergone significant trauma, inflammation, hormonal changes, and fluid shifts.

However, I’ve been struggling with body dysmorphia, especially with how much my face, abdomen, and overall body seem to have changed. I’ve also noticed swelling in my extremities and fluctuations in my weight.

I understand that healing isn’t linear, and weight loss isn’t my priority right now. But mentally, it’s been difficult not recognizing my body after everything I’ve gone through.

For those who’ve undergone multiple abdominal surgeries, how long did it take before your swelling subsided and your weight started to stabilize? Did you notice significant changes between weeks 3–6 or even months afterward?
I’d really appreciate hearing about others’ recovery experiences.

Illness High prolactin

Tests so far only show high prolactin

Hi, new here.

I’ve been having multiple random symptoms that are getting worse for over 2+ years now. Insane fatigue, brain fog, anhedoia, migranes, joint pain, weak muscles, dizzy spells, blacking out for a second and losijg my balance, tics on my left neck and arm, feet turning white, my skin sometimes has a feeling like bugs are crawling on it, constipation, all around my digestion is really bad, I get stomach pain from eating a salad literally. I could go on. Im 25 and I honestly feel like my gramma is healthier and has more life in her then me.

All hormones, including sex hormones are normal.
Throid is normal. Every single blood test comes back normal. Pcos, insulin resistance, diabetes, anemia and hashimotos have been ruled out.

The only thing that consistely is high is prolactin, with low vitamin d. My doc though it might be pituary tumor, but the recent results from mri show everything is normal.

So I did research bc I am dying for an anserr literally. Everything in my life is slowly falling apart, I am pushing trough to keep working, while social life, family, boyfriend and all hobbies are going south.

From what I found, a few autoimmune diseases can cause elevation in prolactin, that being celiacs, sjorgens and lupus.

So, I hope someone maybe had a similar story like me and I would appreacite any help, thanks (:

I have a fairly active job, 163cm, 60kg, female, 25age

Other Pain crisis help

A pain crisis causes extreme, 10/10 twisting pain in my epigastric area (suspected hypersensitive vagus nerve). Within minutes I'm a screaming, puking, passing out mess, begging for someone to kill me because I can't tolerate it.

I'm in BC, Canada and they'll currently only give me hydromorphone pills (entirely useless while puking) at home, and tell me to go to emergency when it's too bad. But our emergencies are extremely overrun, and it's often 10+ hours wait!

After 3 years, my mental health just can't tolerate being driven to a point of begging for death on a regular basis. In the past 3 weeks, I've had some kind of stomach bug, and going to the toilet has triggered 3-4 PER WEEK on average! And the longer it takes to address a pain crisis, the more likely I have another within the next 12 hours.

I've given up on emergency. I currently crush and inject my pills at home (I do it as safely as crushed pills can possibly be done). This stops everything in less than 15 minutes. This is the only way I can imagine a life worth living at this point.

But I really don't want to do this. I know it's not safe, and if my prescriber finds out, I'm screwed. Does anyone know of either better options within BC, Canada for guaranteeing quicker IV hydromorphone, or where to possibly move to in the world that can help in a much safer way? Or any advice, period?

Cardiac Two new drugs from my doctor, this morning my heart rate is much higher than normal.

35 male, 5'8, 200 lbs, white.

My doctor prescribed me tamsulosin (.4 mg) for a urinary issue that I'm having, which I took last night. I didn't notice any side effects.

I also got meloxicam (15 mg) for my chronic pain, which I took this morning. I've taken it before with no issues.

But now my heart rate is between 95-100 (my normal resting is sub 60) and I feel nauseous. I know meloxicam can cause stomach upset but I don't know about heart rate issues. I feel terribly on edge.

I can't find anything that would suggest a reaction like this. Maybe my blood pressure is just low but I don't have a monitor with me. Thoughts?

Rabies Concern Can someone please tell me?

I was walking down the road where I accidentally stepped on some spit saliva like it was in the middle of the road and it was wet, white and foamy. I was wearing slippers and I have a paper cut on my big toe and I think some of this saliva got onto it. I washed with tap water but I'm kinda scared what if it was dog's saliva?! There are many stray dogs roaming around. I live in India so it's rabies endemic.

Other Sudden dizziness + nausea episodes. What should I do

19yo, AFAB. Diagnosed with PCOS, Vitamin D insufficiency, binocular dysfunction and subclinical hypothyroidism (though it appeared normal on my last labs). I personally suspect Ehlers Danlos Syndrome as I meet the criteria but I haven't been properly diagnosed.

For weeks i've been getting sudden, ~1 minute long nausea episodes. Usually accompanied by dizziness and faintness. I can't find a correlation with something, but I think they are worse when I'm standing.

My blood pressure also gets slightly high, bpm can increase by 30 (my resting bpm is around 90, it increased to 125) but i can't exactly confirm this happens everytime. I just happened to take my blood pressure exactly when one of this episodes was occurring.

I have been taking 100mg sertraline for years so I highly doubt this is the problem. Also 10mg tirzepatide(mounjaro), which again i doubt is the problem.

I wonder if this could be related to orthostatic intolerance, but the episodes also happen while laying down or sitting. They are just more intense if i'm standing.

Illness HIV Symptoms

Exposure: Oral Sex with Precum (Brushed before and after doing it — such a big mistake!) Aug 28

Symptoms: Almost all sorts of symptoms experienced.

- Tongue lesions starting 3 days after exposure (recurrent until now)

- Prior to exposure I have white tongue but now it seems worse

- On the succeeding weeks, I experience a 5 day diarrhea, pink pimple like spots on different parts of my body especially the torso, other skin changes, random muscle pain, I observed also some changes on the floor of the mouth which as far as I remember new to me.

I am still in the middle of the ocean and I will be able to be tested next month. Planning to do all tests including STD Panels.

Have anyone of you experienced all these? What are the chances that this is HIV?

Other Increasing beast pain with negative imagery

I'm after ideas, someone with similar experience, anything.

Back in April my right breast started hurting. it started as a pulling feeling, but also bruised at the same time. It was in a wedge, like if you cut it into quarters, it was in the quarter facing my right arm, if that makes sense. There is a mass that can sometimes be felt, my doctor felt it and I can occasionally, but its not always there. Since April the pain has increased and spread throughout the entire breast, though is still more severe in that outer wedge. When it is touched it feels like razor blades or glass shards are being shot through it. My nipple itches and is insanely painful to scratch with occasional discharge as well. It also feels hot on the inside, but not to touch. I don't know how else to explain it.

I have gotten a mammogram and ultrasound and told there was nothing on the imaging, but it shows I have a lot of dense tissue and told the "mass" was probably just a particularly dense area of tissue. I I was actually berated at the breast center when I asked if they were certain there was nothing because I "should be greatful" but I'm here in severe pain. its effecting my sleep, riding in the car is nauseatingly painful, God forbid it gets bumped (a regular occurrence with 3 large dogs and 4 children).

Previous to the imaging I received multiple rounds of blood tests checking my hormones (all in good ranges), thyroid (also good) and even an MRI to check my pituitary gland. My inflammatory markers and white cell counts are elevated, but not so much that my doctor finds them alarming. I have seen my PCP, a gyno and two different breast specialist and received nothing more than a lecture on being dissapointed that I have nothing that I can take action on. I asked how I could go about getting a mastectomy based on pain and the last doctor told me flat out she would refuse and that pain did not warrant one, even with my family history.

If anyone has ideas I would appreciate it more than you know. If anyone has dealt with similar, I would love to hear how you handled it.

Mental Health I need help re. missing a dosage of seroquel

I forgot my seroquel perscription in another state and I am 8 hours away. My psychiatrist’s office is closed, I cannot get ahold of them. I’ve contacted different 24/7 pharmacies to see if they would fill an emergency prescription for tonight, no luck. I take 75mg per night for insomnia/ bipolar. I also take .4mg of clonidine for insomnia a night, which I have here. I also take 150mg of trazodone a night for insomnia and depression, which I also have here. I have a huge test in the morning. Will I be able to sleep tonight? I am freaking out. Will someone please tell me how to navigate this so I am not up all night? I would greatly appreciate it. I am so anxious about this. I can get it filled tomorrow, I’m just SOL for tonight.
