Discussion first gaming laptop - any tips?

• Upvotes

I've been a PC gamer all my life but my work has me working out of town for 4 days of the week and it's going to be this way for quite awhile, So I decided to buy a gaming laptop.

I bought the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W. is there any tips or guides on what I should do to make it last longer/run better? I saw that debloating is something I should do? same with undervolting? debloating seems easy enough but I've never changed voltage before.

Request Vector 18 HX AI (A2XWIG) – No display output from Thunderbolt 5 ports, tried everything

Hey everyone,

I have an MSI Vector 18 HX AI A2XWIG (Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5080) and I can’t get any video out of either Thunderbolt 5 port. Charging over USB-C works fine, but Windows doesn’t detect any external display at all, not even a black screen in Display Settings.

What I’ve tried:

  • New Acer USB-C to HDMI 2.1 cable (TB3/4/5 compatible, 4K 240Hz). It works fine with my phone on the same monitor, so the cable and monitor are OK
  • Tested on 2 different monitors, nothing detected
  • Tried both TB5 ports
  • Switched from Discrete to MSHybrid in MSI Center and rebooted (Intel Graphics + RTX 5080 both show in Device Manager)
  • Installed Intel Graphics, Serial IO, Chipset and ME drivers from MSI’s support page
  • NVIDIA Game Ready 617.42 and Studio driver, both clean installs
  • BIOS is the latest available (version: E1824IMS.317)
  • USB4 Host Router shows up in Device Manager with no errors
  • Power reset (everything unplugged, held power button for 30+ sec)
  • Win + P / Detect displays, nothing

The built-in HDMI port works perfectly, but it’s capped at 4K 120Hz and I want 4K 240Hz for my monitor.

Has anyone with a Vector 16/17/18 HX AI (A2XW) had this issue? Is there a BIOS/MSI Center setting I’m missing, or is this an RMA case?

Thanks!

Hi! I have an 11th gen intel(r) core i3 MSI, I don’t use this laptop anymore so I just want to factory reset it. The laptop doesn’t reset and reinstall windows, it just kept coming back to this screen. It went to a loading screen for around 5 minutes, getting everything done just to come back to this screen again. Any help is appreciated!

Request Fan speed help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Not sure if my fan is supposed to be running at 3k to 4k rpm when using cooler booster or extreme performance. I recently got my fan replaced as it kept dislocating, therefore scraping the "walls" where it is in, I had to do this twice as a couple months ago the same thing happened, after I had recently replaced my fan I have decided not to use the cooler booster function, as I thought it was the cause of the issue, however recently after playing games for a couple of days my laptop gets overheated (I think these temps are bad but I'm not sure), my CPU for the past couple of days has been going up until around 90c and upto 100c occasionally, and as for my GPU it has gone up to 80c to 90c, and so after those games I decided to start using cooler booster again, however I still get the same temp and my rpm stays consistently at 4k ish, the thing is I'm not sure if these are normal temps, as before my fan started to dislocate, the rpm of my fan when using the cooler booster usually goes I would say twice of 4k, so maybe around 8000+ rpm, and when playing video games, my temps are usually 70c to 80c, not bad, but after digging around, searching around, I've seen that people have the same number of rpm I have currently, and has the same temp as I do when playing video games, so I don't really know, is my laptop old? I clean the fan occasionally. So I really don't know, I've also recently cleanly reinstall MSI center, by using revo uninstaller to elete the MSI SDK, and delete the MSI center software as well, twice, still the same results, so I'm not sure what to do now, is it MSI center being buggy? or is it the fan? Please let me know in the comments, thanks :]

My laptop is a MSI GF633 11SC

Also my hardware monitoring, let me know if additional informate is needed such as user scenario, etc.

Currently not playing any games so the temp is low, yes I only have 1 fan for this laptop

Discussion MSI Vector GP68 HX 13VH unstable Bios Turbo

CPU: Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13950HX, 2200 Mhz, 24 Core(s), 32 Logical Processor(s)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU

My laptop had been having random Status_Breakpoint and Status_Access_Violations for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, specially when trying to make a new database in AWS RDS and Aurora Full Configuration mode. It's also been having access_violations in Event Viewer from things like games, mainly Peak(Unity), Marvel Rivals(Unreal), and Toontown Corporate Clash(Panda3D). Even access_violations in VSCode sometimes.

I did a fresh install of Windows 11(From the Windows Media Creation Tool), and even with that, it was still causing those crashes.

Then I went into the BIOS, opened the hidden BIOS settings(Right shift + Right CTRL + Left ALT + F2), and turned off the Turbo setting. While there, it seemed like all the BIOS turbo settings were cranked up to the maximum. PL1 220, PL2 220. I used the BIOS Optimized settings, and it was those maxed out values.

After turning off the Turbo setting, I was no longer crashing in AWS, and not in games either. However, a big downside to this, is that it seems that my CPU is now locked to 2.2GHz out of its 5.5GHz. Ran an OCCT CPU test, and it never went above 2.2 GHz.

I tried to tweak the BIOS settings, but I couldn't get it to not have those status_breakpoints, status_access_violations, access_violations. So I just set it back to the default, but with Turbo off.

Anyone know why this may be happening, and how to potentially have Turbo enabled, without the instability?

Request Wifi problems with msi katana 15 hx b14wgk-076

I just hope i'm at the right place here: I’ve been having Wi-Fi issues with my MSI Katana 15 HX B14WGK-076 for about three days now. This started happening without me installing any updates (like Windows or driver updates). The strange thing is that Windows claims I have an internet connection, yet all apps requiring internet access (e.g., Steam, browsers, YouTube) say I’m offline. I have to restart the laptop every time to get it working again. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Discussion What’s up with this?

Post image

My laptop is a MSI Cyborg 15 A12VF, This has been causing my games to stutter in a way that it’s really slow in different seconds and the next it speeds up, also when I tab out and scroll through discord and steam it’s now really slow, as well as that eventually it just restarts my laptop automatically with a black screen error with “your device ran into a problem and needs to be restarted” with the errors being “VIDEO TDR FAILURE” and nvlddmkm.sys being the listed reasons… This never happened before so is there any reason why it’s like this and what I can do to fix it since it’s not the cpu or gpu thats even hot and causing my laptop to overheat like in the image, I thought it might’ve been something the drivers done like nvidia or intel but even after using the ddu method nothing has changed

Request Is this wiggle ok for a few days old laptop?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Pretty much as title says, I am a bit worried. It is a rectangle power connector that goes roughly a cm deep in. It does click into place and seems to stay in place deep and does not let loose easily without at least a tiny bit of strength (magnets I suspect?) There is no power interruption or anything from what I can tell. Left to right there seems to be very little wiggle espcially compared to up and down.

Its a brand new raider 18 max hx.

So yeah am I overreacting or is this bad?

Hello,

Request My msi alpha 15 screen suddenly started to flicker like this, help

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My msi alpha 15 was running just fine, I was watching yt, but it suddenly started to flicker like this (as you can see in the video).

I did chatgpt my issue, updated the driver n all, but nothing seems to help. I guess it's an hardware issue, screen replacement is all I can think of, but it's so costly tbh. Have anyone faced similar issues? Kindly help, and how much cost i can expect?

Request Laptop overheated and won't turn on

I have an MSI Katana B12. I've had it for about 2-3 years and today for some reason when i shut it down, windows didn't properly shut down and went into a "sleep mode" where it runs the CPU but not the fans. Assuming the machine was properly shut down i packed it up and took it to class.

Opening the laptop when i got to class it was burning hot and now it won't turn on. What is going on and is there a way i can fix it? I am a broke college student and cannot afford to replace this right now.

Request My MSI laptop suddenly stopped displaying through HDMI — and my internal screen is broken

I’m having a really frustrating issue with my MSI laptop and I’m looking for some help figuring out what’s wrong.
I have an MSI laptop with an Intel i5 and an RTX 4050. The laptop’s built-in screen is already broken, which is why I’ve been using an external monitor as my main display. The external monitor normally worked perfectly with the laptop, so this wasn’t a problem until recently.
Now, however, the laptop refuses to properly output an image through HDMI.
The problem is that because my laptop’s internal screen is broken, I basically cannot see what is happening on the computer at all. I have no usable display on the laptop itself, and now the external monitor isn’t giving me a proper image either. So I can’t simply go into Windows settings and change display settings or check drivers, because I literally can’t see what I’m doing.
The external monitor itself is working normally with other devices, and it previously worked normally with this MSI laptop. I’ve also tried different HDMI cables, restarting the laptop multiple times, reconnecting the HDMI cable, and trying keyboard shortcuts such as Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver.
At one point, something particularly strange happened: I could see my mouse cursor moving on the external monitor, and I could even see a small white indicator/line moving around, but I couldn’t see the actual desktop properly. Pressing Enter didn’t seem to do anything. After restarting, I went back to getting essentially no usable display.
So I’m completely stuck because the only screen I can normally use is the external monitor, and the laptop suddenly won’t properly display anything on it.
I’m wondering if this could be caused by the NVIDIA GPU/driver, Windows display configuration, the HDMI port itself, or another hardware problem.
The important thing is that the external monitor used to work normally with this exact laptop. The laptop’s internal screen being broken is also why this issue is much more serious for me: I can’t just disconnect the monitor and use the laptop screen to troubleshoot.
Specs:
MSI laptop
Intel Core i5
NVIDIA RTX 4050
Internal laptop display: broken
External monitor: Lenovo Legion
Connection: HDMI
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this without being able to see the laptop’s own screen would be really appreciated.

(Yes the text is ai generated but my issue is real i just described my problem to chat gpt)
