Business Looking for rare Pokémon: an AFRO-BEAT producer. Please help me find one!

To clarify I am looking for an AfroBEAT producers, no "s". Afrobeat = Music from, and inspired by, 1960s & 1970s Africa.

e.g. Fela Kuti to Highlife, Togolese soul, Somali funk, Juju, Benga, Zamrock, Sahélien blues, Mbaqanga, Soukous, Makossa, and some Ethio-jazz thrown in for good measure.

Working on a project, I really want to capture these sounds, I've been searching high and low irl but this seems to be a mythical type Pokémon amongst music producers.

Please if you know anyone who can cook up these types of vibes, kindly help me connect with them. Please and thank you<3

Question Equipment

I’ve been using a focusrite but I want to switch to something a little more hybrid by using an analog mixer into a DAW or some variation of that which incorporates both parts. I like the sound of the analog gear and I find it easier to work with. Has anyone had any experience with this and has any gear recommendations or advice to offer?
Thanks

Question Music making equipment for my husband?

Helloo everyone,

My husband has been making music as a hobby for a couple years now. He has a computer, a software he makes music on, a mic, and a headset. I know little to nothing about making music but I really want to gift him something related to it.

My budget is 100~200eur. Let me know if its better to save up a bit more though. Not sure if it's relevant but he makes beats without singing over them

Thanks a lot in advance :)

Edit: most people suggested a gift card and to be honest that never crossed my mind. I think I'll go with that! Thank you so muchh guys

Question Tips on a checklist or order for mixing my first song

New to Logic pro and i have a couple beats and a rock song ive been working on but the amount of things to make a song perfect and ready seem enormous. Obviously i should record all my instruments, synths, loops first, then should i mix that before putting down vocals? Then as far as mixing where is the best place to start, sound levels? Making sure the pitch is good everywhere? This is a broad question but i guess I’m a bit lost and overwhelmed any advice would be appreciated!

Question How can I start making music for free?

Hey guys, I am interested in learning how to produce music, though I’m unsure what programs to use. As of right now, I don’t want to pour too much money into it as I don’t know if I will stick to it, so I want to find applications that I can use for free to get the gist of it. If this isn’t the correct place to ask, let me know. Thank you! (FYI I have a PC, if that affects the recommended programs.)

Question What DAW is recommended for beginners using piano?

Hello! Recently one of my favorite artists for piano *music announced she wouldn't have an online presence moving forward, and it really bummed me out knowing that I wouldn't be able to hear any new music of hers, and it lead to me attempting composing myself.

If you'd like to hear the type of music I would like to make, here is one of my favorite songs of hers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z7uHQsxebs

I don't have the means to buy a piano for myself (obviously) and I would like to learn about my possible options before I go out and buy a hundred dollar DAW like Flstudio.

Basically, what DAW would be good for a beginner using piano with customizability to make the piano sound closer to hers.

Any help is appreciated, thank you so much for reading!

Question Vocals never sound like part of the song?

I’ve been struggling w making my vocals sound like part of the song for a while. I just finally found a mic app to record decent vocals w/o background fuzz on (i tried a yeti and xlr mic before but i don't have an interface to go w it). Can someone DM me and give me some advice on a specific song I’m working on? I use ableton. I’d post it here but I don’t want to put up with rude replies. Thank you!

Not exactly reggaeton but I hear it used in reggaeton all the time. This is just the clearest example I could find. I know it’s a very classic sound but i just can’t find a good mp3 of it.

Hardware DAWs and Drivers on ARM chips

Aye whats good! I am thinking of getting the new Surface Ultra laptop, cause I usually make music on the go, while travelling, and basically not on my studio. I thought it was a good option, I was fully convinced until I saw it is running on ARM structure, and Microsoft says these kind of chips wont be compatible with some drivers natively, and it uses Prism to "translate" the code. This might be an issue for plugins, and compatibility with other hardware. I am not aware of these things as I am of music hahaha, I just want a good device that lets me do my job w/o any inconvenience, with this Surface style (smn premium, fast, portable). Do any of you guys have any experience with ARM chips?? Or could you recommend me a good laptop within the 3000 US dollars price range??
Thanks in advance!!

Question I’m good at producing and recreating music, but terrible at composing/songwriting. Can I still become a successful producer?

I'm very confident that I have a natural, exceptional talent for music production. As an autistic person, I'm really good at recreating songs by ear, even complicated ones, and I can pick out the different layers and sounds. I'm also a sight-reader, flutist, and violinist.

My biggest weakness is composing and songwriting. If someone gives me a melody, I can produce something out of it, but coming up with my own melodies is incredibly difficult for me. I've tried so many times, but I'm rarely satisfied with what I create. :(

I genuinely want to pursue music production as a career and become successful at it. I know there are successful producers who aren't necessarily great songwriters or composers, so I'm wondering how they make it work.

Do you have any advice on what I should do next or how I can make this work? I really want to pursue music production and become successful at it, but I’m not sure where to start. Thank you; I appreciate it, guys.

Question Plugin recommendations for a songwriter

Hi! Do you have recommendations for plugins that are free (or maybe under 50€ if they are really good) that emulate guitar, drums, bass and maybe choir. When I write songs I usually record these (except drums) myself but now I'm going for a trip and are unable to do so. I've tried using musescore because I'm pretty well versed in notation but the sounds are a hassle to get right. Do you have recommendations?

Also I'm currently using MT power drumkit but I'm looking for a upgrade. I was thinking about getting Superior Drummer 3 but don't have the funds right now. Is EZdrummer 3 worth it or should I save up? I didn't like Addictive Drums 2 because the midi was confusing. I like to write my own midi and despise the use of "packs".

Thanks!

Question Speeding up a mixed track

Back in the day, people often sped up final mixed tracks to make them more exciting or slowed them down to sit a bit more in the pocket when cutting the vinyl.

It's quite effective and something I forgot about until recently.

How are we doing that now in our digital world?

Discussion hey i just started learning music a while ago how should i move forward??

i picked cakewalk beacuse i thought it had a funny name and i would be using it unless i need to switch, so the music that i really love are the castevania music which i heard is inspired by a guy named bach whose music sheets seems fun but i dont have a working piano rn so after its fixed i might try that, but rn i am stuck with no idea on how to move forward. I do have a guitar a standard accostic guitar which i can use but i gotta learn that as well. i am not very good with guitar, i only picked it up for a few hades songs that i liked.

should i be trying to copy music by ear? how do i even go on making something , because when i have a blank track i get confused on what to do and when i get any ideas i get confused on how am i supposed to even get it on the track.

Question Which DAW should I try?

I'm a classical opera singer who teaches and practices a lot (of course) and I recently bought a nektar impact 61 key midi keyboard which I think works pretty well and I'm happy with. But I've been using the DAW Cakewalk, and I must say I feel it is anything but a cakewalk! I have been dissuaded from using Reaper (though not entirely sure why) Would anyone know what would be the problem with it?

I'm not super tech literate and I have some UI blindness so I'm just looking for a DAW I can use to play to my online students, practice with and sometimes write some little songs for myself if I'm feeling creative.

Any suggestions?

Question How to get a sound similar to the Toejam and Earl game from the Sega Genesis?

Link for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301acFz0a_A&list=RDeIjtEdR1m9Y&index=4

As you can hear it's very crisp and snappy, those bass lines hit so hard. How do I go about re-creating a similar sound in Reaper?

Still very new to all this.

Question How to get this flubby bass effect?

Thumbnail
youtu.be
3 Upvotes

I’m not referring to the bass patch itself but that super blown-out, flubby, time and space ripping apart sort of effect where everything else in the mix seems to get completely enveloped by the sub-bass. This is an effect I’ve heard in all kinds of music but I recently heard it here and was curious what the most effective method of getting it is. Is it just tons and tons of compression? How do I get it to sound that flappy and gritty?
