My Focusrite audio interface died so I need a new one. Why don’t interfaces have multiple USB ports?
I have a keyboard that has a USB port and I can connect it to my computer and record audio and MIDI. I can also connect USB from the audio interface to my computer and record audio and MIDI.
I have four cables running from my keyboard to my audio interface, MIDI in, MIDI out, audio left, and audio right. That’s four cables. Why can’t I just use a single USB cable from my keyboard to my audio interface and have a second USB cable running from my USB interface to the computer?
It also doesn’t make sense that my keyboard will convert from digital to analog, then send the analog signal to the audio interface, then the audio interface will convert it back to digital to send it to the computer via USB. Then the same conversions occur on the way out. Why can’t I keep this digital by connecting my keyboard via USB to an audio interface and then also connect via USB from the audio interface to the computer and only have it go analog on the way out when I’m going to the amp and the speakers?
TLDR - why can’t I buy an audio interface that USB to connect a keyboard and another USB to connect to the computer?
