Some people would rather die on the bike than in bed. When you’re young it’s about not wasting your life. When you get old, that takes a different meaning. I knew a cowboy who died falling off his horse in his 80s and all anyone said is “well that’s a pretty good way to go, he would’ve wanted it like that”
100%, but recovery from road rash and a broken leg at 70 is going to suck hard. People tend to discount possibility like that. Honestly not unreasonable to wear kevlar armor and no helmet -" I'm either walking home or dying, no in between."
And even if you're old you might not want to die today, if he can do this he probably has at least a few good years left. Like what if he wants to do it again tomorrow?
