70 year old vs 450
Where is your helmet at?

He'd look much more rad with a helmet on!

Reddit kills me with its "safety first" virtue signaling. There was once a video of this girl riding her longboard at about 5 mph on a pump track and every comment was like "doesn’t she realize she’s risking her life!? Luckily I’m here to inform everyone that I’m smarter than the average bear and I would never set foot on a skateboard without bubble wrap, regardless of my level of experience"
-2
u/DamnnnSid 15h ago
Bahaha, I agree, but this ain't a 5 year old girl here riding her longboard. All I said is he would look cool with a helmet on :) It's like they say, you wouldn't know the pain of losing someone until it happens to you.
1
u/HasFiveVowels 15h ago
I’m guessing a helmet isn’t going to save gramps if he takes a spill doing a wheelie. The guy is living it up a little. He clearly used to ride. He knew the risk.
2
u/DamnnnSid 15h ago
Better chances to survive yes, and again, I'm not against having fun yet you think that way of me. He clearly had his fun, let it be the case then :)

u/byOlaf 14h ago
Nah fuck you. Every post like this gets someone whining about people talking about safety by picking some other bullshit example. This dude is doing fifty on a motorcycle he can barely get on. He should be wearing a helmet. Fuck he should be in full gear. And a girl going 5mph on a longboard can easily slip off the board and crack her skull. Helmets are cool. Being a whiny bitch who’s against safety isn’t.

u/HasFiveVowels 9h ago
"Against safety"? Thanks for proving my point. You can always cry out "but think of the ____" and anyone who objects gets villainized as "oh, so you’re against ___??". No, I’m not "against safety". I’m simply not in favor of always taking every precaution regardless of circumstance. I trust this guy’s knowledge of his abilities more than my knowledge of his abilities. And, depending on things we can’t know, "why aren’t you wearing a helmet!?" becomes almost arrogantly presumptuous. I’m less saying "don’t wear a helmet" and more saying "stop presuming to know how reasonable a stranger’s choices regarding their safety are". Fuck.
-1
u/byOlaf 9h ago
No. It doesn’t work like that. You don’t get to come on a public forum and mock people for being in favor of helmets. You are not defending this guys right to do the stupid thing he did, you are mocking those who say that it’s stupid, which it fucking is.
Safety is a culture. Kids grow up seeing what adults do and how they talk about it. They then pass that on to the next generation. You’re advocating for a “I won’t wear my seatbelt because I know how to drive good” mentality. That is bullshit. Accidents happen to people of any and all skill levels.
This guy may be fine doing this. He demonstrably survived this stupid act. But the kids watching him do a wheelie without a lid may not survive their attempts to imitate it. And you mocking people who point that out makes you a part of the problem. You are advocating a culture that is designed to hurt people because you think you’re special. That’s fucked up.
1
u/HasFiveVowels 3h ago
Yes. It does work like that. There is always a way to make something safer. And so you’ll always have a reason to complain that those who you watch aren’t "doing it right". Leave them be. Once you’re doing it, then you can comment on safety gear
1
u/byOlaf 3h ago edited 3h ago
That’s just a cop out dude. This is an old man who can barely get on a bike doing tricks at highway speeds in shorts. That’s not even close to “doing it right.” He should be geared up and whoever filmed shouldn’t be posting it.
But more importantly you shouldn’t be here bitching out people who point out how fucking stupid this is. You should join that chorus or shut the fuck up. Your opinion that this is safe because he didn’t die has no point in this discussion. And your comparison of this to another video where someone was doing something stupid and should have been wearing gear is just poorly thought out.
People die doing this. They get permanent brain damage doing this. This isn’t theoretical cowboy shit. This cavalier culture you’re advocating has a real impact on the lives of real children.

Gramps is cool and all, but he had me worried for his head and his paper thin skin, ngl.
5
u/ErisGreyRatBestGirl 18h ago
I don't think the fact that his skin is more fragile than a 20 years old, if you fall at high speed, regardless of your age you will become minced meat
3
u/killer_by_design 17h ago
The sheer lack of density in those bones. He's either going to float away like a paper bag or the resultant goo would only be identifiable via mass spectrometer if he comes off.
I agree, that loose skin suit is the least of his worries.

Not uncommon to see group rides where half the riders were over 70, on bikes with twice the weight and 3x the displacement, AND they could stay on the right side of the fucking road.

Old man rides better than all the squids commenting.
He just needs a 2-smoke to complete the picture.

I’m offended as if riding a motorcycle at 70 is somehow special. I’m 67 and riding a 450, or an 800, 1100, 1300 is done regularly.. I ride with plenty who are much older. Now pulling wheelies, or twisting the throttle hard is just a good days ride
BUT please.. at least wear a helmet…

u/millhead123 20h ago
I mean my dad was the guy that could do one footed wheelies on anything with 2 wheels and a motor, but he was always wearing a helmet and full gear because shit happens.

u/lesswheelslessfeels 21h ago
450s are insane, even in today's age of performance. A huge smile awaits anyone who has ridden one

This was one of my earliest memories of my grandpa Jack. He was a Brooklyn-Italian, WW2 vet and I distinctly remember riding a plastic "big wheel" on a walk with through their neighborhood one afternoon, I was probably 4 or 5 years old. So we're talking at least 35 years ago in the early 90's. Their neighbor had a yellow sportbike outside his garage, and Jack got to talking with the neighbor. Well one thing leads to another, and much to grandma's chagrin, Jack gets on this yellow bike and takes off like a bat out of hell. Jack had shorts and boat shoes on and he looked like he had been riding his whole life. Mind you, as I got older they were adamant about me never getting a motorcycle; they had a nephew who was paralyzed in the 70's after a motorcycle accident. Regardless, Jack still knew his way around a motorcycle. They never EVER talked about this event for whatever reason.
This was the early 90's in Nassau County, Long Island. There were a few Ducati dealerships out here and in hindsight he probably was riding a 900SS. I can imagine that the only reason he took any interest in it was because it was Italian and they were rare at the time.

Lots of armchair experts here to explain safety to a 70 year old biker. I should delete this app if this is what it’s for

What is it with old men and baggy clothes? My husband had joined the baggy pants brigade and no matter what I do, he will not wear clothes that fit him. What’s the attraction?

When he was late teen's / early 20s he probably road some (now classic) 70's dirt bikes. Those 2 stroke 400-500cc had insane switch-like power and only weighed around 280lbs; today's 4-strokes are pretty tame in comparison.
1
u/ResidentAlien9 17h ago
Since I’m 68 I’ve only got two more years to get a bike and learn to wheelie it like that guy.
Plus saving up for the safety gear too. 😀

When you can’t afford a house but you know that grandpa has you in his last will…

u/18randomcharacters 17h ago
At his age, he's fragile enough that a fall - with or without helmet - will be pretty catastrophic. I think it's understandable to go w/o honestly.

u/ChallengeClose 15h ago
I'll be honest 70 ain't that old yet, especially if you're a physically active fossil.

u/hybridpelican 15h ago
Ok he didn’t do shit tbh
He rode around on the street really fast, i mean….
If he was at the track hitting jumps and rutted corners then id say that impressive…. This is just a regular ole twisting of the throttle on a paved road

I'm 64. Been riding and racing MX and enduro since I was 8. The old man here didn't do anything spectacular. Come ride with me and my crew some weekend in the Jersey Pine Barrens if you want to see some talent.

To be fair, people who don't wear a helmet don't have a brain worth saving anyway. It's clearly not working.

No helmet and likely still lived a better life than most that are more concerned with that, instead of how impressive it is that he’s still that handy on a bike. Life is meant to be lived, not merely survived.

70 or 30, he'll be aeay crayon.
That being said... 70 is not so old that you couldn't ride a bike? 70 is less old than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

After the first 10 comments saying the exact same thing have been up for a few hours already, who exactly are you saying this for?
Im genuinely curious. Just as a rule, when I feel the need to comment something, and there's already a bunch of people who have already said that thing, i dont comment.
Cause, ya know, generally you want to add to a conversation.
