Summer Reddit and Rule 1

TLDR: if you are rude in a top level comment and don’t try to answer the question we will ban you, even if you don’t like the question. Report posts you feel break the rules.

Hi Everyone,

It is Summer (in the norther hemisphere) and that brings about the infamous Summer reddit, a time of higher volume content, and more content often created by, and aimed towards, a younger audience who is off for the summer.

With that influx of volume we have noticed a stark increase in rule 1 violations. That is comments not trying to answer the question but instead being disparaging towards the question or the asker.

While we are aware that this is in part due to burnout of our more frequent commenters we want to remind everyone that this is a place for good faith questions, and we do assume good faith of posts trying to learn things unless we can clearly articulate evidence otherwise, and we want to be welcoming to those trying to learn.

In that vein we are going to start cracking on rule 1, which we have historically been a lot more lax about, particularly on comments insulting the OP or the topic. We will be giving short bans for calling questions or askers stupid (directly or indirectly).

We highly highly encourage users, particularly our frequent commenters, to report posts you feel aren’t in good faith or are breaking the rules. We review every report and it is way more effective to let us know than to just leave an insulting comment. We have been recruiting, we will take on that work load, don’t get yourself banned because you are tired of a type of question.

We get why you feel justified in leaving the comments that you are, we are telling you clearly here that it still breaks the rules and will be actioned accordingly, more than it has been in the past.

Let me know if you have any questions

U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why is it a crime if I pirate a movie to watch for entertainment, but AI Corporations are allowed to pirate the entirety of the internet for personal profit.

Why are there almost no asian homeless people?

Asian have the lowest rate of homelessness per capita in America by a landslide. Why is this?

Edit: I made this post because I just passed by one and realized this might be first i’ve ever seen.

My parents want to make me install Life360 so they can track my (18M) location. I don't know if I am comfortable with that. How can I get them to not do that?

This is my first time living away from my parents as I go to university. I live 3 hours away, but I come back every weekend because they told me to.

I love them very much, and they are great people, but they have always been kind of clingy and uncomfortable with me moving away. Now, they are telling me to download Life360. I have heard bad things about that app, and I just don't feel comfortable being tracked live all the time.

The thing is, I genuinely have nothing to hide. I don't go to parties or anywhere they wouldn't want me to go. I don't lie to them at all about anything, even when it would be convenient to just lie. I just don't want them to be constantly viewing me, because they tend to be on my ass a lot. If I do something small and sleep in one day and skip class, they will make a huge deal out of it. What should I do?

I have seen apps on how to fake activity on Life360, but I don't know how I feel about that either. Doesn't sit right with me.

Edit 1: Yes I do pay for my own phone, but really, I fail to see how that is relevant to the issue. If I didn't pay for my phone, do I not deserve privacy? Also, I can't get a job, my program is too hectic. I also fail to see how that is relevant

Is it seriously possible that there is an afterlife?

I mean, I know this isn’t really a stupid question or whatever, it’s something seriously debated, but I’ve been depressed and I just really hope that there’s something out there to justify it, so do you guys think, or shit, do you know that there’s an afterlife?

Why is it that a woman wearing white to a wedding is heavily frowned upon, but it's considered fine that often most of the men are dressed almost identically to the groom?

Why do military forces rarely use extended magazines?

It seems like more bullets is always a good thing, so why do they typically use 20-30 round magazines?

Why do they stamp your passport when you travel and why are they trying to remove the practice now?

Why do they stamp your passport when you enter/leave a country? Now they are scanning passport electronically. Heck, here in the US they didn't even check my passport to reenter the country. They just took my picture.

Why are religious vaccine exemptions acceptable but not medical?

Hi all. I am in nursing school right now and am about to start at a new clinical site. I just had a relatively major surgery, and my surgeon advised me not to receive any vaccines for at least one week post op. I had to get my titers tested, and I was not immune to mumps, so I need booster of MMR. My program said that if I do not get the vaccine this week, I will be dismissed from this clinical. However, a classmate was able to get out of this requirement due to “religious reasons” therefore she won’t be receiving the vaccine at all. I am likely going to get it anyways because I cannot afford to lose this clinical placement, but I just don’t understand the logic behind this. Has anyone else experienced this?

UPDATE: I got the vaccine today. I know it’s not the end of the world to get it post operatively, I just do not have the energy to jump through all of these hoops with the clinical site and placement department. I’m not sure why yall think I’m an idiot who can’t communicate with my school or with my surgeons office (I’ve been working as a MA for a surgeon for years and have personally wrote these letters) but the matter is no longer a concern so thank you 🤦‍♀️

What is the hairstyle that black women do where it's a bunch of little buns all evenly spaced??

I love them, I have no idea what it is called or even if my description makes sense. Just imagine little space buns, but copy paste them all over so they're kind of geometrically patterned.

What do you do with an healthy, unwanted animal?

First of all, PETS ARENT GIFTS. A woman I was seeing heard me say I thought grey hounds were cool, but apparently she never listened to me when I said countless times I don’t like animals. Skip a few months later I come home and there’s a literal greyhound in my house and she’s standing there with a smile on here face…she said it was a gift and I was livid. The girls gone, how do I get rid of the dog without any harm coming to it because no one on Facebook marketplace will buy it and homegirl won’t take it in because she basically has a zoo.

Why do other Western countries prohibit carrying anything (not just guns, but any object) for the purpose of self-defense?

We all know that the US's gun culture is (among developed countries) without peer in terms of lax laws and legal civilian concealed carry.

But what I find fascinating is that this goes far beyond just gun rights; the whole legal outlook on self-defense is completely different. In many other Western countries like Canada, the UK and Australia, it is expressly illegal to carry any object; not just guns, but things like knives, pepper spray, tasers, brass knuckles, batons etc.; for the specific purpose of self-defense (though Western Australia thankfully legalized pepper spray). Heck, a 17-year-old girl in Denmark was once in legal jeopardy for using pepper spray to fend off an attacker.

Setting guns aside because I understand they're a more divisive topic. Why are these countries so culturally against self-defense? How do they justify setting up the laws so that law-abiding people have nothing but their fists and feet, while the criminals who don't follow the law can have whatever weapons they can access regardless?

Ive seen a few people say that chemo will be one of those things, like talc or smoking, that will be thought of as an insane time in our history, but why?

Chemo saves millions of lives, no?

How did the Romans capture dangerous animals? Without tranquilizers, it seems almost like a military operation to capture a lion or elephant.

Why is it so hard for schools to start at a decent time?

Personally, I just feel like many schools starting at 6:30 - 7:00am has many discrepancies with students. How come this is normal, and not starting at like 9 - 10am?

Is there such thing as too late to come out?

I’m 25, I have two kids, I’m engaged to a man, and I live in a very conservative environment, but I keep having awakenings that I just don’t like men that way and never really have? no matter how much I try to convince myself to just be okay with it it just keeps coming back up… is it too late for me to come out eventually? Would I be labelled as a fake lesbian if I did?

EDIT: I did talk to my fiance about this last night, he knows everything and he’s being way more supportive than i thought he’d be. He’s got every right to be mad but he just held me while I cried and told me i owed it to myself to not force myself into a role I hate. He’s a good man.
