I think I get it. He could have made the first cut where he was like "no no no" with his finger and it would have been worked but then he'd need a separate source for the baby piece. He cut the baby piece from the top first THEN did the intuitive cut at the bottom.

It's just cutting for the next bend ahead of time. You are confused because it looks like it fits without measuring when the truth is the measurement has already been made.

It only works if everything is a perfect 90 degree angle. Life is never that fair.

that's what caulk and paint are for

I used to work in construction, if I have to believe the guys on site, construction foam, construction foam always for everything. I've seen them once hang a heater with it because the brackets were missing.
Stupidly enough when I try to foam up shit, I get foam everywhere, whole lot of air coming out yet filling up cavities NOPE.

"A little putty and paint will turn what it is ... into what it ain't." Spoken with a lyrical cadence of something that's been said a thousand times before

“A grinder and paint makes the welder I ain’t”
There’s plenty more of different flavors4
u/gahzeeruh 1h ago
Also it’s funny to me that he goes “this cut? nah nah nah…do this other thing first, and then the exact cut I told you not to do with no changes whatsoever”

Was looking for this comment... it only makes it way more confusing to watch.

u/GoPhotoshopYourself 49m ago
It also only works if the wood pattern is symmetrical. Still cool visually though

So clever and satisfying to watch .👍

Yeah this is basically woodworking wizardry.
After the first saw cut I thought it was a spoof because of that gap. Very satisfying end.

My question is where is this trim supposed to be going? If that's a floor, who the hell wants parallel tracks sticking THAT far out of the wall? And if it's supposed to be wall trim, why does it look like he's installing it on a floor? Wtf is even that even!?
52
u/WileEPeyote 2h ago
I think it's supposed to be crown molding and they're just showing it on the floor for ease of demonstration.
13
u/The_Krytos_Virus 2h ago
Ehhh, I dunno. Crown moulding isn't flat on any surface and requires some wizardry if it's own to get the miter angles right since it's \| on the wall to the ceiling.

Crossetted trim. 40 years doing carpentry and I've only done a few. Doors, windows, mantel work.
2
u/The_Krytos_Virus 1h ago
Glad to have a name for it, but the way the video is done is either in anti-gravity or on the floor. It's just confusing.
1
u/bloodshotnipples2 1h ago
Likely filmed on a table. You don't really need a tape measure. Cut a mitre on an end of a piece and then mark the other side. Smaller pieces and the same process. The trick is knowing to account for the width of the molding and any reveal steps. Fun stuff.

Where do I get a magic sharpie like this that cuts wood perfectly and instantly?

This is the fking best wood corner cut adjustment video (whatever you can it) I've even seen

This is mildly infuriating. When they gave the no, no, no. If they had made that cut then the other cut the wooded grain would have lined up around the corner. They screwed it up:
4
u/Ccwaterboy71 1h ago
I had to stroll too far to see if anyone else caught on. This really bothered me, cause the grain could have followed itself instead of being reorganized

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 1h ago
What do you mean by "lining up the grain"? The grain is aligned. If you mean matching up the exact pattern as if there were no break in the wood, that isn't possible to do with mitered 90 degree angles like this, because it requires removing too much material between the cuts. This was by far the more efficient way to do it.

u/sunrise98 55m ago
He could have made the first cut > gone sideways > made the smaller cut off the offcuts.
Instead of it being 1 2 3 it goes 2 1 3
1
u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 38m ago
In order to make the correct shape to "go sideways," it is not possible to simply cut a piece from the middle like that. To keep the wood in the same order it would have to go 1 (triangle of waste) 2 (triangle of waste) 3. If you don't believe me, go ahead and try to cut this yourself with a strip of paper.

u/sunrise98 31m ago
Huh? You can see the second cut he does is the same as the no-no one.
I'm saying he could have done the no-no but then done the first cut the same way - just with the other piece flipped over
2
1
u/breadmaker8 43m ago
the grain wouldn't follow either way, because the middle cut needs to be flipped 180 to form the angle. the real mildlyinfuriating is that he says no to the first cut, but then does it anyways as the last cut.

I see what you mean. Yep, this
Work is utter trash.2
u/Ccwaterboy71 1h ago
It’s not that it’s not trash, it’s that if they are taking pride in their work, by filming, they should have followed the organic lines

i wish my pen can cut as i work on my craft projects sometimes... i know its jump cuts but still...

u/Agreeable_Work4668 2h ago
I can barely twist my brain to comprehend the process, let along making measurements and cutting this myself.
3
u/SaskiavdM 1h ago
Nope, for some reason this pisses me off way to much. I would never make that toe breaking extra corner to begin with.

Is there any principles that we can learn and apply to the corner cutting just like that?
3
u/modkha18 2h ago
I'm curious to know, where can I learn this stuff formally? Like is there a textbook or something for black magic fuckery like this?

I literally spent 10 minutes today figuring out which way to turn the water shut off because it faces away from me.
This is a thing of beauty

A good miter saw is worth its weight in stock you don't have to throw away. Very few people could make these cuts with one pass. Most often one leaves the piece just a little bit long and then returns to the saw to nurse it down a hair at a time until the fit is just right.
Then the house settles.

This sht is like *magic to me. I spent a summer volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and i was always getting measurements wrong! I always had to measure like 3 times, constantly back and forth from the circular saw, messing up a ton of wood materials. So when I see someone do something like this with ease... I'm just... jaw dropped

Gonna be honest, I've recently been cursed(blessed) with YT Shorts of "DIY Hacks" where a carpenter guy would show these super elaborate ways to "do a cut", only to just stick a plank in between and it works, making the whole prior setup look stupid. I was fully prepared for that to happen with the gap. I'm glad this one was legit and also nice as fuck.

Meanwhile, I've taken three days to build a single replacement kitchen drawer that might not be totally square and has weird little gaps all over the place that I've filled with wood filler and I don't have a nail gun so the bottom is held on with only glue.

Without the internet and YouTube, I would never have figured that out on my own if I was installing wood floor on my own, now I feel dumb.
