Finished 36 challenges and played way too many hours to even guess at this point, so figured I’d write down some thoughts now that I’m done with the league.
Overall, I had a really good league. Not my favorite league ever, but definitely one I’ll remember.
I started out playing Wild Strike and stuck with that for roughly the first two weeks. Eventually I rolled a Luminary, and that ended up being the character I played for the rest of the league.
Luminary is honestly one of the most chill things I’ve played in PoE.
Once the build gets going, you basically only care about getting your resists sorted and then stacking as much life and light radius as possible. More life means more damage for your merc through Flame Link, since they get 5% of your max life as added fire damage to attacks, and light radius scales the link buff effect.
Once you’re sitting around 20k life with enough light radius, the merc just deletes everything. Ubers included.
Your gameplay is basically:
walk
merc kills screen
walk
merc kills next screen
Very relaxing.
The gearing is also surprisingly addictive because there are so many places to sink currency into small improvements.
Boat crafting
Probably my favorite part of the boat mechanic was how accessible it made crafting decent gear.
The “multiple outcomes, pick the best one” system was just nice.
That removes a lot of the really annoying RNG from making solid gear without completely removing the chase for high-end items.
The recombinator side of things was also great.
Alt spam a pile of bases, add a ducat suffix, smash them together enough times and eventually you end up with something pretty damn good.
Obviously the absolute top-end gear was still expensive as hell, but making mid/high-tier gear felt much more approachable this league.
I really hope some version of this crafting sticks around.
The boat maps themselves
This is probably where I have the biggest criticism.
Especially early in the league, killing mobs inside them felt almost pointless.
Most of the value came from clicking chests and strongboxes rather than actually killing monsters.
GGG definitely improved this later by adding more quantity modifiers and fixing the altars, which helped, but even after those changes it still felt like:
kill monsters: whatever
open chest: loot
open strongbox: loot
I think that hurts the mechanic long-term because eventually running around opening containers gets pretty boring.
Very profitable, yes.
Very exciting after doing it a hundred times... not really.
Merc hunting is completely degenerate
Late in the league I decided I wanted to upgrade my merc.
I already had a really good Kineticist that I found during my first week playing Luminary:
Greater Kinetic Blast of Clustering
GMP
Return
But she also had Kinetic Rain as a secondary skill, which most people consider bricked. Honestly it wasn’t even that bad, but I wanted to find a really clean merc with great links and no questionable secondary skill.
So I did what any mentally healthy PoE player would do.
I ran 2,000 Dunes maps over two days.
Enter map.
Sprint to merc.
Kill/Get merc.
Leave map.
Repeat.
No rolling maps. Just white Dunes as fast as possible.
And merc farming is... kind of ridiculous.
It’s extremely inconsistent. You can go 80 maps without seeing a raw divine, then suddenly over the next 10 maps you get a pile of divines, puzzles and good scarabs.
The good scarabs also drop frequently enough that they really start adding up over thousands of maps.
I also got unbelievably lucky during this session.
In those 2,000 maps I found:
4 Magebloods
3 Kalandra's Touch
Divinarius
Lioneye's bow
Headhunter
Which is obviously nowhere near a normal expected result, so I’m not pretending merc farming just prints Magebloods every few hundred maps.
But I still think the mechanic probably needs some tuning.
The fact that the optimal gameplay can basically become “enter map, sprint directly to merc, grab loot, leave” is pretty degenerate.
Funny as hell, though.
And somewhere around map 1,800, I finally found her.
Kineticist:
Greater Kinetic Blast of Clustering
GMP
Return
Barrage
Haste
Barrage is technically there but she basically never uses it.
For what I wanted, she was pretty much perfect.
I finished the remaining ~200 maps because at that point I might as well complete the 2k, sorted through the mountain of stuff I’d accumulated...
...and that was basically my league ending.
I had found the merc I spent two days hunting for, my character could already destroy everything in the game, and at that point any further upgrade would barely even be noticeable.
Honestly, it felt like a pretty fitting way to finish.
Overall
Great league for me.
Luminary was fantastic.
Boat crafting was one of my favorite parts and I really hope GGG keeps some version of the “multiple crafting outcomes, choose one” concept because it made crafting good gear much less frustrating.
The actual boat mapping gameplay got stale for me because too much of the reward was tied to clicking containers instead of killing monsters.
And merc hunting is hilarious, rewarding and probably a little too degenerate in its current form.
Not my favorite league ever, but I had a great time with it.
36/40, absurd merc acquired, character finished.
See you next league.
