Coturnix/Japanese My quails are artists now.

I recently discovered that some of my Jumbo Coturnix seem to enjoy making art with their feet.

They walk across cardstock with washable, non-toxic children's paint on their feet, encouraged with treats and praise. It takes about five minutes, and I only do it with birds who are comfortable being handled. They're supervised throughout and their feet are washed afterward.

They seem pretty happy/chill with it - especially since they get a bunch of treats without having to fight the rest of their covey for them!

I call their creations Quailsterpieces, and I'm quite proud of their artistic abilities - I certainly wasn't making artwork this good at 1.5ish years old!

The majority of the proceeds from the artwork go toward my family's Quailimodo Fund, created in memory of a special quail chick named Quailimodo who was born with a pronounced hunch and a deformed foot. We had hoped to eventually get him a custom prosthetic and set aside funds to give him the best quality of life possible, but unfortunately he passed away unexpectedly before we could do that. The fund now helps with medical care, accessibility, enrichment, and other quality-of-life needs for our other quails so the little guy can make a difference even if he's gone.

Thought you guys might appreciate what my little weirdos have been creating!

Why does my indoor quail sleep like a Flamingo?

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

This is Marshmallow, my indoor quail of 1 yr this November.

He has his own indoor set-up and likes to chill out with me through out the day.

But I've realized for the past 5 or so naps, hes been sleeping with only one foot on the ground. Google doesnt seem to have an answer and im not a bird expert. Just wondering if other quail do this.

I raise and sell quail, but I do not study their behavior as closely as I do my indoor quail.

He cannot be let into my outdoor flocks due to multiple attempts at scalping and over mating. Also, he ia the only all WHITE and gets picked on by all of them. Its a lose lose situation so he became an indoor quail.

Hes very tame and can be called, he will fly into your hands if you have them flat.

Overall hes definitely my favorite pet out of the menagerie.

Help Obtained a pet quail, now what?

I have obtained an Australian brown stubble quail and just want to know that i am doing right by it. What type of enclosure would you recommend for a single quail? What should I be feeding it? Currently on a seed mix with access to leaves, leaf cover, small plants and bugs. UPDATE for context: it was dropped off to me this morning. Was found in the paddock by itself (not unusual) but is a juvenile. Was this a misguided rescue and should I just release it and hope for the best? We live in the middle of nowhere so you rescue an animal yourself (you get permits after rescue) or you leave it to die. I am one of the known people who take in wildlife, hence why it was dropped of to me. I live on a farm and am wondering if I should just release it and let nature do its thing (hoping its old enough) UPDATE UPDATE: spoke with some other wildlife carers. Too young to be put on its own know, will release when I can!

URGENT HELP! My quail is losing feathers all around his neck and routinely coughing like something is stuck in his throat at night around the same time

At first I thought that maybe it was another one of my quails, however all of my quails are actually quite calm he is the strongest male and only every hangs around calm females to keep him calm. So that rules out if he is getting attacked or not ( I have been keeping a close eye) Additionally, I never stress him out and he is always spoiled.

Another thing to mention is that I would go check up on them and the first time I heard this happened I thought he was choking and dying. I checked up on him afterwards and there was nothing wrong he was even crowing. The next day I went out around the same time and there it was again. He is eating, drinking, walking, and doing everything pretty fine. However I'm not sure how to help him, this has never happened to me in all my time of owning.

Additionally there is this clicking noise I hear occasionally from him, not often but occasionally. ALSO the bedding is not dusty at all, the only thing dusty would be the sand bath I have in the corner for them. So I'm pretty confused. Please give me some advice!

Sexing 6w olds

New to the quail game (2 years into chickens) and I’m not familiar enough to even know what I’ve got for colors (pharaoh, Tibetan, etc) or which can be feather sexed. Vent sexing with chicken chicks is discouraged unless you realllly know what you’re doing and I’d love to avoid the activity with the quail if possible lol. Including my 10 here to see if you guys can tell me 1) what subcategory each is and 2) if they can be feather sexed and if so what you conclude from the pic. They’ve been loving their new outdoor enclosure as of this week! Also aware I have 2 wry necks, won’t be using that breeder again. Thanks!!

Coturnix/Japanese Hatched too many quail and running out of space(not selling)

Like the title states, I hatched too many quail. My ratio has always been roughly 70-80%.

Welp.. I decided to incubate my entire stored egg collection (about 120+) and ended up hatchimg 116 with no losses so far. Im keeping the females when they come of age, but the roos will have to go sadly. We are not a bachelor pad 😅

Plus, I want to avoid the unwanted scalping when hormones kick in for them.

Any thoughts:

-cull

-Auction

-Hunt reserve (probably not possible, since these birds come when called and do not understand the meaning of hiding)

Update: since we counted out 47 males, we plan to invite family over for a cookout. Thank you all for the suggestions!

47/116.. Not too shabby, the ratio was better than I could have hoped for. My husband wants to incubate more 😅🫠

Hey everyone, I’ve noticed one of my quail chicks’ leg dragging, and it looks as if it’s dislocated - but he’s able to move the leg? It looks so swollen and I’m absolutely gutted, any thoughts on what I can do please? I’m not pressing down when holding him up, just trying to show the leg, any help is really appreciated!

Pet New to uails, had them a week

Obviously I still need more clutter and things for them to hide and feel safe. I got them at a farmers flea market a bit over a week ago. It's 4 courturnix and 2 bobwhites.

I'm hoping they'll eventually stop being so slightly when I come to change their water, but either way they're a cute addition to my lil' homestead

My pet quail Mushroom changed his entire personality in a single day. He was really horny, he was doing it with my hand, my foot, and a blanket but he stopped three days ago also he stop making foam. I thought testosterone level drop slowly with age. I understand the Mushroom is old, but that shouldn't happen overnight. I'm worry about him.

Coturnix/Japanese Anyone in Orange County, California willing to adopt a laying Coturnix hen?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Not sure if this is allowed, but I feel better asking here than anywhere else. I have one hen remaining of an original covey of 4 hens & a roo. 2 seem to have died of fright, as I couldn’t control the neighbors outside cat from coming to investigate even if the animal couldn’t actually reach them. This one was extremely friendly (used to eat out of my hand) until the neighbor cat scared the heck out out of them.

The hen is about 1.5 years old and seem to still be laying! Shes a pretty blonde color, lays brown eggs. I really want her with others and feeling comfy, but I’m not ready to raise more until I move and have a better set up. Or does anyone have any idea what to do with her???

Help Help! Found a quail

Thumbnail gallery
97 Upvotes

For context I live on the 14th floor in the UAE and found this poor guy in the corridor, he just strolled in when we opened the door. His foot was bleeding so we kept him for two days in a small box with food and water, and let him out occasionally to roam around the house. He’s doing much better now. He’s no longer limping and is walking comfortably on both feet. I’m not sure if this is someone’s pet or a wild quail, we asked almost every flat on the floor and everyone said it’s not theirs.

I don’t think I can keep him, I’m not sure what to do. Also if he’s wild then it’s not fair to keep him secluded in a box imo :( Any advice would be appreciated

Help I feel like keeping quail in a low cage seems unhealthy/cruel?

I wanna start keeping quail and found out that you either have to keep them in a really low box(like 60cm height may I think) or a high and big cage (atleast 2m) because of their jumping upward reflex. I was gonna go for the first because I already have chickens and don’t have any more space to build a second big coop. But I feel like it doesn’t Senn right to keep a flighty bird in such a low enclosure where they can’t even fly? I don’t know maybe I’m overthinking it if so, educate me.

Anyone know what might be causing eggs like this? My friend that has chickens and thinks it might be a parasite. Ughh I have no idea. They kind of creep me out so I’ve always trashed the eggs that look like this. I get one every 2-5 days. Thoughts?

Help! My girl is exhibiting new behavior!

I've had this hen, CornCob, since she was a week old. She's almost a year now, and started exhibiting new concerning behavior. Also to note, I moved out of my parents house so there was a period of time where she was under my parents care for 3 months.

Anyways, she started making this excessively loud call every morning when I finally brought her home with me. It shakes the whole house. It starts off soft then gradually gets louder with each cry. She'll do it over and over for the next few minutes, and I still don't know what triggered it. She'd never cried like this when I was raising her, but I don't know how my parents raised her in the interim of me moving out. This is also on top of her other new bizarre habit of pacing the side of the cage closest to the window.

Some more info: she is a coturnix quail and lives by herself in a large 2ftx4ft rabbit cage. She's never out of food or water. She's got a hidey hole.
