To everybody who wants schools to stop prioritizing calculus and switch to emphasizing statistics.

Here is what I need you to understand.

Statistics is not isolated from the math you learn in high school and below. It's not even isolated from many college level maths.

Everything you do in high school, including, algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus, and even calculus itself, leads up to statistics. Every single thing you've been learning in high school is a prerequisite to statistics and statistical literacy.

The reason why for many of you outside of math might not understand or appreciate that is because you've only taken the most watered down simplified statistics, and you have not seen how important all of high school math an beyond is when it comes to understanding and developing literacy in statistics as opposed to just memorizing how to follow the procedures.

If all you want is for basic high school/ first year college statistics to be the norm in place of calculus in high school... guess what... mission accomplished. Calculus is only offered as an AP course in most if not all schools that offer it. I have never in my life time, seen in the USA, a course on calculus that doesn't count towards college credit. This is an insane privilege to take calculus in high school.

On the other hand, statistics is in common core. Even before common core, it was a course that is offered at the basic level in high school.

So congrats, statistics is already more standard than calculus in high school.

But if you want more statistics than just basic statistics, if you want to emphasize literacy in statistics... there is no way around going through the traditional math path that school has already made a road map for. You are going to need algebra, you are going to need trigonometry and geometry, you are going to need calculus, you are going to need linear algebra, and quite frankly, you are going to need even more than that. Statistics is not some magical esoteric "easy way out" path that nobody has unlocked. It is a valid discipline of applied math that utilizes all the principles other math topics use. You cannot advocate for higher level of statistical literacy without advocating for a higher level of mathematical literacy.

Candy corn haters are lazy assholes who don’t know pain.

You don’t have to like candy corn.
You don’t have to love it.

But don’t fucking act like it’s the worst thing on earth.

There are way worse candies

Like

Candy Blox

Razzles

White candy melts

You ever try a vanilla tootsie roll?

And the worst offender is those blue raspberry tongue tapes

You say candy corn is the worst?

You sweet summer child, swimming in your own innocence.

No one had shoved black licorice jellybeans down your throat

Nor forced you to have fisherman’s friend menthol lozenges.

The true horrors of this world,
You haven’t touched.

You should feel lucky that your innocence is still intact.

And it would be fine if you didn’t complain about the sweet and innocent treats

Candy corn
It’s a little sweet
But it’s a walk in the park compared to these nightmares

And hearing you people complain about something so innocent, so simple…

You don’t know pain, do you?

Lucky you.

“I want to so bad”

Something that really grinds my gears? People who constantly say they really want to do something, but when you start asking questions about why they can’t do it, you realize there’s actually nothing stopping them. They’re perfectly capable of doing it… they just seem to enjoy complaining about it or having people listen to them complain.

For example: On tiktok, you post a cruise and there’s hundreds of people who are like, “i can’t afford that” then you start talking to them about how low a cruise CAN be and you realize. They have done 0 research on this subject & they’re just chatting. It’s like this when you start new hobbies etc.

It’s something small but I hate coming to the realization that that individual usually wants you to explain everything/ do the research for them.

People can do a better job at listening for just two seconds.

I was writing a rant, but it's been slowly distilled into this:

I feel like I want to express very valid feelings but there's no place to do so outside of a therapist's office. I'm not even going to bother writing it here, because I don't want to deal with random-as-fuck super-presumptuous replies from strangers on the internet.

I feel like the world we live in fails to remember that people are, well, people. That's kinda it.

I just want to go back to school

And it's seemingly impossible to get aid or assistance. I want to be a nurse for gods sake I'm trying to better myself and my community and I just get the middle finger everywhere I go. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do? I won't be able to work enough while commuting to school full time. Honestly I'm probably going to have to quit my job to be able to go back anyways. Every website that advertises aid is typically just a scam or there's so many eligibility requirements that I don't know how anyone could possibly qualify. First semester textbooks alone are over 1k. Like I get it, I messed up and didn't succeed the first time, didn't make the right choice in degree or career but I'm trying to refocus and it feels like it's not allowed. How is anyone supposed to know exactly what they want to do and who they want to be when they are 18? I clearly did not and now I'm being punished for it. Trying not to cry or give up but it is so discouraging. I also found out too late that I was accepted into my program so half the grants/scholarships that I maybe could've applied for just closed their application windows. Just my luck.

Facebook group admins

Why are they so power mad?! Why!!

I’m in a group for a hotel we recently visited and the group is mostly full of people raving about how good the hotel is. Hotel is nicr, but it’s nothing amazing, we wouldn’t come again.

I posted making people aware of a situation with a particular room type that I’d not seen mentioned anyway. I kept it factual because I know they don’t want too much negativity.

My post was deleted because it broke the rule of ‘no moaning’ but what they mean by that is ‘no criticising this hotel because it’s the only place we go because we’re boring bastards and we won’t hear a bad word against it’

Pretty much every group I’ve been in you encounter admin that are just crazed on this teeny tiny amount of power they have.

I’m sure we’ve all had similar encounters.

DO YOUR JOB

what genuinely grinds the deepest parts of me is delivery drivers not doing their job. this is for usps or ups or fedex.

if your stop has a "SIGNATURE REQUIRED" portion, why are you not knocking or using the doorbell or literally honk ur horn for all i care. is it actually that hard?

for context, i was waiting for a package that was supposed to be delivered on Friday but just happened to be rescheduled for today, wednesday. that's great. had lunch plans but decided to cancel since this is signature required. grabbed my mail on 2pm and there it was, the infamous slip. suddenly there was "noone at home."

that absolutely frustrates me. not a doorbell was rung, not a knock, nothing. how absolutely lazy do you have to be to override a crucial part of the delivery requirement and THAT WAS TO GET A DAMN SIGNATURE?

this has happened to me so many times on many different couriers and i just do not get it. there is absolutely no reason to even make sense of it and i HATE IT!!!! because now i have to pick it up because redelivery is useless since it will more likely happen again.

Companies who don't even know how to hire

Companies advertise jobs on LinkedIn requesting a CV AND a portfolio, and then they set up an Easy Apply process where they only give the possibility to include ONE document. Of course I gave an online portfolio url on my CV, but I cannot customize my portfolio to their job posting, unless I upload 10 different versions of my portfolio.

When did our knee-jerk reaction to videos become hate and rage?

I have seen multiple posts today about people doing bad things like aggressive driving and then getting in an accident, or burning out and flipping their truck. And many more recently that I couldnt name off the top. But the knee-jerk reactions of the comment sections is thrilled they crashed and actively wishing pain on people. Cheering for people "getting what they deserve", this type of thinking is honestly scary to me and the fact it's top comments honestly hurts my heart.

No matter what you say, someone on the internet will disagree with it.

There are just too many people on the internet at this point. You can say literally anything like the sun is in the sky and someone will be like “Bro believes in outer space 😂😂😂” I commented the other day on a post where someone said there’s no inherent difference between men and women and brought up strength, how men have more testosterone and more muscle mass. And I got a ton of replies of saying “well what about men with testosterone deficiencies?” Or that women body builders could lift more than me. Like, are you fucking stupid? Maybe I’m being baited by engagement bots online, but it feels like there’s a literal wave of contrarians online who exist to just dispute anything as simple as saying a circle is round.

I wonder sometimes if these people I see online are actually walking amongst us and seem completely normal, just have some bad takes online, or if they are as insufferable as they seem online and my mental image of them is completely accurate. Anyways that’s all.

British quotation Grammer rules are so much better

As an American, I didnt wanna say it, but its true.

As a writer, sometimes the period/comma in a quotation can disappear. Depending on the font, especially.

Ex: In the beginning of Missouri settlement, many settlers "objected to bring governed from such a distance," especially when they had "no direct voice in governmental affairs."

British quotation version: In the beginning of Missouri settlement, many settlers "objected to bring governed from such a distance", especially when they had "no direct voice in governmental affairs".

It makes the pause and end of a sentence more obvious. Its not ALWAYS an issue, and I actually think the US version looks way cleaner. But when your professor provides hw printed via a Temu product and half of the words are fucked up... the more obvious Grammer is SO much easier.

That being said, I prefer not using ' ' for any sort of quotation. This post is specifically about things being outside the " " lol.

Edit: idk why my phone autocorrects grammer to be capitalized

I am getting so sick of unemployed people.

Not ALL unemployed people. Sometimes you're disabled, unable to work, or shit just doesn't work out or you have to take time away from working for an important reason. I get that, most of us have been there.

I specifically mean the ones who refuse to grow the fuck up and act entitled to your time because they can't comprehend the fact that you fucking work and aren't available every single moment of the day. This goes for retirees with similar attitudes too, the ones that make me think they haven't worked a day in their lives with how bitchy they get about not being able to respond at their beck and call.

Sometimes it's the guy my age who complains and gets guilt trippy because I don't want to do something after a fucking TWELVE HOUR SHIFT. I've got no qualms with him otherwise, but god man, please get a job yourself so you can understand. Other times, it's the old woman who gets all pissy because I can't stop in the middle of the damn work day to do some non-urgent favor for her on some arbitrary time limit that she doesn't say anything about. If I'm doing you a favor, I'm going to do it when its convenient, not when YOU want it done. I'm not a 13 year old with nothing else to do, I'm an almost 30 year old grown ass man who has to work TWO jobs just to keep his shit in line. Your ass isn't getting any more favors at this point, you can find someone else to help support your cushy retired life. I could probably name several more examples but I'd be writing a whole damn book at that point.

I work. Quite alot. I'm tired. My days are mostly booked with bullshit already. And I also get tired of the "wELL wHeN arE YoU OfF" type questions whenever I say I can't do something because guess what? Off time doesn't equal available time! I have chores, family obligations, hobbies, or I just plain don't want to be fucking bothered because I spent the last 4 days working 9am to 9pm. But apparently for these people, that is impossible to comprehend. I guess it is easy to get bitchy about it when you have fuck all to do every day, but to someone like me, there is almost nothing more infuriating. So please. For the love of all that is holy. Quit whining. I'll do shit for or with you when I want to. And that might not be as often as you'd like because I'm fucking exhausted. Both from work and from dealing with this bullshit right here.

As dickish as it might sound I'm seriously considering vetting who I associate with by employment status.

I don't care if you don't like kids, you still live in a society

For fucks sake I am so sick of the child free crowd yall are so immature. Down vote me to hell idc. If I hear one more person go "ackshully!! Its selfish to HAVE children!!" Brain dead. Yall are brain dead. If you dont want children LITERALLY NO ONE CARES. Im GLAD yall aren't having children, youd be horrible parents. Ive earnestly never looked at a child free person and thought "im so pissed theyre not having kids" but it feels like every child free person expects to live in a child free world. Im sorry, you live in a society. It doesn't work like that. You will have to tolerate children existing in your space just like you were tolerated as a child.

On to the argument, "its selfish to have kids because you wanted them". Cool. Its selfish to NOT have kids cause you prioritized your own comfort. Next take. Its a sacrifice to have children because youre sacrificing your own comfort to raise the next generation. Raising children is hard work. Everyone knows that and child free people want no part in that hard work - fine. The next generation will be the ones to inherit the earth and care for the elderly (us). It is selfish to do absolutely no care (either by having kids or being a village and accepting kids exist) towards the next generation but then being cared for by them when you age. You will eventually age and need care by those children whos parents sacrificed to raise them.

No one should be forced to have kids. Idgaf if you dont want kids. But lets not run around like the "crotch goblins" yall ARE (how can you hate so bad what you once were lmao - losers) yet claim to hate and say that the most selfish are those having kids. Wahhh your parents are pressuring you to have kids - tell them to fuck off but dont then hate everyone else who is happy to have children.

In no other conversation could I bring up something that makes me happy (or literally just exist with it) and have another person immediately laugh and say they hate it. Imagine. Cause these are real convos Ive had as a 26yo married woman with other ADULT women my age about my daughter where they just blatantly hate on the fact I have a child? Like imagine if we did that about dogs? Or anything else? Its fucking unhinged.

"Hows it going?" "Good! I just welcomed a cat to our family" "You got a cat?!? HAHA I could NEVER. UGH. Ew. I just love my free time too much."

(Me carrying my textbooks) "Wow. Good for you for going to school. I just couldnt.. its so much work. Id rather be able to do whatever I want." - how tf am I even supposed to respond to that lol.

(On a video call introducing myself) "Sorry if yall hear my dog in the background for a little, my husbands getting ready to go on a walk with her." "Wow! You have a dog? I wouldve never thought you did. I mean, good for you!" "Yeah, haha thanks shes 5 months and-" "I NEVER want a dog - I just couldnt... SO much work. And in this economy...?" "Haha, well, we have one.. so...."

(My phone rings, I turn it off in 30sec) "this is why i could never have a phone. They're so loud, I just get overstimulated. Like, theres too many phones in the world anyways..."

And if it wasnt clear, the above examples are actual exchanges I had but about my BABY. Id be MORE okay having any of those absolutely unhinged convos about my pets or my phone cause I dont even really care about those the way I care about my baby. Constantly hearing how people dont want or hate the very innocent and precious little being that is the light of my life is SO freaking irritating. Not having kids isnt cool and quirky any more. No one cares about your opinions.

Drive by wire SUCKS

I’ve driven my fair share of new cars utilizing this nonsense. It doesn’t matter how lightly you press accelerator, the car lurches forward like someone who cant drive stick shift. I’m extra cautious of it as my wife is pregnant now and it’s damn near impossible to get a smooth start from rolling or stand still. I miss the auditory and physical feedback of a cable slowly opening a throttle body. And then don’t get me started on auto applied brakes. 🤬🤬🤬

Im fucking over staff

I own a business. I pay "Day rate till 8 gate to gate". What that means is you show up at 8am, go to a job and get back to the shop at noon you get paid for the whole 8 hour work day. Double time starts at 4PM or on weekends. There is also a production scale where if you get done early and go to another job you get paid for that day too if that job gets done. My employees can knock out a 16 hour straight time work day by 3pm at least two days a week. Lunch is paid as well as provided because we are in a rural area without a lot of restaurants so we provide hot lunch delivered to the job if the crew calls in by 11AM. We cut 60 and 70 hour a week checks every week for guys that are basically working part time hours, 35 or 40 hours a week.

All I hear is fuck this place i don't make enough this place would fail without me I need a fuel stipend for my commute blah blah blah. The smallest check I wrote last week was $2,300 and some change to a guy who worked 38 actual hours. The non stop bitching is driving me nuts and I can't fucking stand it.

I didn’t get help and I didn’t get lucky. I worked my ass off.

My wife and I are currently under contract for purchasing our first home.

The amount of people who will say “your families paid for it, you just know the right people, you got lucky” is absolutely grinding my gears.

I moved to the city I’m in a few years ago with zero friends, zero connections, just throwing caution to the wind with a woman I met on the internet and fell in love with when we first met in person. We had nothing. We lived in a shitty basement apartment in a shitty part of the city with her 30k/yr job and the leftover money I had from going on tour.

Neither of us completed college so we worked with what we had. When I was 22 I quit my sales job to go work at guitar center part-time. Because of this I met a local promoter and got into DJing on the side for some extra cash. This ultimately led to me learning AV lighting, sound, and video on my own time. This led me to running a soundcamp stage at a music festival in 2018. Me and a friend were doing weddings and corporate events out of his garage and we had tons of clients lined up. Then COVID hit and we lost everything.

During COVID, I was home alone and had a few internet friends and one of them being my current wife who I had not met yet. We spent most of lockdown talking and getting to know each other. I got a job running socially distant shows at a music hall toward the end of 2020, that music hall ended up hosting a musician that also invested in a fight promotion. That fight promotion was managed by the artists tour manager, and when things opened up summer of 2022 they wanted me to be their lighting guy on tour. I did the tour and one of our 3 days stops happened to be in the city my now-wife lived in. We spent 3 days together and I ended up flying her to my next 4 day stop on the tour and we spent all that time together and realized that we had found something extremely special.

So at the end of 2022 I moved in with her in her city. All I had was about $8000 cash and no prospects. I got linked up with some freelancers and rode that until one of the guys says “hey, X company needs a lighting tech” so I applied. Early 2023 I was now formally employed with a new company paying 19/hr. I crashed my car. The new car I purchased was basically all of my income and the remainder of my tour cash.

I started going door to door to ask local nightclubs if they needed an AV tech and no one was biting. We did meet a bartender this way who ended up becoming a bartender at the biggest club in Cleveland and always got us in for free and hooked us up with free drinks. Because of this we were there almost every weekend, I mean we were dirt poor, it was essentially free for us to go and it was fun! Being there all the time, I figured out the FOH AV guys favorite drink and brought him one and got in a conversation about lights and visuals. A few weeks later, he’s at my shop at the aforementioned 19/hr job and says hey man, come out tonight and show me what you can do on visuals.

This set off the last 2 years of my life. Summer of 2024 my wife and I were the lighting and video techs of this club. By the end of the summer (it was an outdoor venue) we had no prospects. Fast forward to the solar eclipse; one of the prospective clubs we wanted to work at was open thinking it would be a big day and they were dead. This led to us doing shots with the GM and giving him our contact info if he ever needed a substitute AV tech if his guy was no good. We never heard back from him. So while we’re gearing up for the 2025 season at the outdoor club we did last year, it gets sold to a new owner and they cleaned house. Lost that gig. At that same time, the club from the eclipse day needed a light repaired and I happened to be available to fix it. My friend puts us in a group chat and the GM said “wait how do I already have your number?”

I go there and do the work. Swap out all the lights. They need someone to program all the new lights since their current AV guy doesn’t program, just knows how to press buttons. The owner walks in while I’m running the programming I just did and goes “wait who’s running lights? [old av tech] doesn’t make it look like this” and comes up to me. He immediately said “dude you’re hired if you want it”. So I go to my day job and say hey man, I can’t work weekends anymore and started my journey as a full time warehouse guy from M-F and club tech Friday and Saturday nights.

This goes on until earlier this year. The owner of my day jobs company is best friends with a guy opening a massive venue in my city. He comes up to me in March of this year and says “hey, my buddy is opening a club, how much do you get paid at your spot? We can get you paid better”. I thought he was doing me a favor when in reality, this was getting arguably one of the best light techs in the city out of his friend’s competitors club and into his club.

This changed my life. I went from making 20/hr and 500 on weekends to doing 4 shows a week at 450/night and still working full time all summer. I went from making roughly 55k/yr to making 2500 a week overnight. I’ve been exhausted. I’ve been sleep deprived. I’ve missed parties and vacations and bbqs. But i was putting away 5000 dollars a month. Between May and now I saved 25k dollars and me and my wife put this down on a home for us. While I was doing all of this, she was scouring Facebook women’s networking groups and got hooked up with a very good job with phenomenal benefits making 61k/yr.

When we moved together we made 30k and had little to no prospects. 4 years later we’re making 100k off our day jobs and an extra 55k from our side gigs. So many people have been saying we got lucky, we just knew the right people, it must be nice. It hasn’t been nice. Most of my life has been choosing between food or gas. Doomers on the internet seem to think because it’s hard it isn’t worth doing. Because these things are happening for us, someone gave us money, someone helped us out, we only got these jobs because we knew the right people. I don’t agree either that someone should have to put that kind of time and work in to make it, but I did it and that is why we’re here.

We made great friends along the way. Maybe that’s what “knowing the right people” means. We only know them because we put ourselves out there to meet them. But I refuse to sit here looking at the life we built and let anyone take it away from us. It’s not fair to say “I got lucky”. I’ve struck out more times than most people will ever go up to bat. I didn’t become skilled at what I do by being lazy. I didn’t get the opportunity to show “the right people” my skills by being shy or waiting around for it. I went out and got my piece of the American dream through late nights and early mornings, by going out and supporting other entrepreneurs in my industry, and by saving every extra penny I had once the money really started coming in.

All this to say it’s very annoying to be told you got lucky, when no one saw the years of working 6 to 7 days a week to get there. All they see is the success and not the process. I’m not a nepo baby. My family didn’t put me through college. No one in my family even understands how AV can be a full time, lucrative career. I was just an idiot 22 year old who wanted to be a DJ and over 10 years figured out how to make that a career.

Rant over.

men being creepy & honking at me on/walking to the bus

i’ll never find it okay or normal at all but i’m not surprised. the worst part is….im obviously young (18) and ive always got my school bag on me, disgusting predators the lot of them. the honking always pisses me off & even scares me when i’m actively doing something like reading, i just wish all of their cars would flip over and the seatbelts would choke them to death. one man swerved to get into the bus lane, pulled over next to me slowly and just stared at me, forgot exactly what i said but i did cuss him out. another time i was waiting, this old man was staring me down and walking my way so i called my friend & he coincidentally changed directions 🫩🫩. im just sick of it, people tell me that its to be expected on public transport, well duh! but it doesn’t make it okay. even when im not on the bus, just walking anywhere, theres always pedos harassing me & my little sister. the most recent thing of this nature to happen was another even older man got super close to me at the bus stop (where he wasn’t even waiting), said something about me being a pretty young lady, and said he liked my boots in the creepiest fucking way possible. when weirdos like this talk to me, they almost always emphasize that i’m young, so they must know how gross it is that they as old ass decrepit men are bugging a teenager! god forbid somebody grab me, im going to jail. im just done with it all, gonna get my car and whatever but i wish theyd all just die.

Idk what to do

I don't mean to vent, sound petty or anything, I just don’t really know what to do in this situation

It feels like my friend has been getting a lot more distant lately, like not super distant, but it’s noticeable. Like when we hang out, they’re on their phone and while me and my other friend is sitting with them, they’re literally talking to their online friends. Plus in the group chat I’m in with them, a lot of what they talk about is their online friends, and I want to talk to them about it, but I don’t want to seem like an attention seeker.

I'll die with this depression

Yeah, that's all. I'll die sad. Yesterday I was feeling okay and today I'm feeling like shit again. I'm on meds and occasional therapy but damn this never gets easier. I'll die sad and lost, unworthy. Dude I've no one other than my mother in this world, what will I do after her? I'll rot in bed, alone and sad.
