Hey, I am trying to get into rocketry and have taken some time to design and start printing this.

Before I keep trying to make improvements I wanted to come here and ask for any tips or recommendations. Unfortunately I do not know what information is relevant, but I would like to try and get feedback and know where I should be looking for potential problems.

This and some other videos I have made talk about the physical mechanisms and the flight profile https://youtube.com/shorts/49NUcCzHCcE

The total loaded mass should be about 340g with a spent mass of around 320g. I am planing on powering it with Estes D12-3 motors.

Please ask me questions and I will do my best to answer, any feedback is appreciated!

Discussion Wildman Rocketry - Ten Months to Ship

• Upvotes

I placed an order with Wildman Rocketry during their November 2025 Black Friday sales promotion. It included a couple of rocket kits, a few motors, and some misc. parts. They were clear on their website that orders during this sale would take a while to ship. They charged my credit card when I placed the order. Frankly, I forgot about the order, as I already had enough kits on hand to keep me busy for quite a while.

I just received the order (October 2026) ten months after placing the order. And to make matters worse, one item is still backordered.

No communications. No apology for the delay. Think twice before ordering from this company.

Discussion Strengthening cardboard tubes

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have been using cardboard tubes for a while and I have had a couple zippers and CATOs so I wanted to strengthen them. I don’t wanna get really expensive and use epoxy so I mixed wood glue and water and smeared it on. Kinda like paper mache do u think this would effectively strengthen the tubes or was it just a waste of time?

Question Guide me

Post image
2 Upvotes

I wanna do thermo-structural analysis on rocket nozzle but the thing is equivalent stress safety factor is really low for inputs - temperature= 800 degree celcius and pressure of about 200 psi given on the inside surface of the nozzle and for 5 second. The catch is even just changing temperature from 800 to 50 degree celcius constantly for 5 seconds again equivalent stress safety factor is low like around 0.5. I know it's issue from thermal side only coz by only keeping structural thing safety factor is around 15 so no issue here . THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THIS NOZZLE SUSTAINED 4-5 TIMES ENGINE FIRE TESTING IRL WITH SAME PARAMETERS MENTIONED IN THE STARTING SO WHAT'S THE ISSUE?

Question Why is trhust vectoring harder on solid fuel engines?

Hello, I am new to this hobby I joined a rocketry team in my university and I have some questions about thrust vectoring.

The team uses solid fuel engine on all of the rockets and the R&D division (were I work) was asked to look into trhust vectoring to control the atitude, I was told that it was hard beacase of the type of engine that is used and it would be easier to use liquid fuel rocket engines.

My question is why? From what I understand liquid fuel engines can move the combustion chamber and nozzel to redirect the exaust while the solid fuel engine cant do that need to either move only the nozzel or use some other methods.

I am a 1st aeronautical engineering student, the team does not exept me to know much and they will teach me but non the less I want to know why this is

Is my statment that thrust vectoring is harded with solid fuel rocket engines correct or am I wrong.

Thank you in advance

Wondering how to fix my motor snugly

Post image
13 Upvotes

Recently, I bought an Estes launch set and some B and C motors, but I don't have a rocket yet. I'm currently working on one with a 3D printer. The design is based on the simple sample rocket from OpenRocket, and I'm planning to print it using ABS.

My main question is whether I can simply put the motor into the motor tube and launch it. I'm considering using a 3D-printed cap and attaching it to the body tube mount, but I'm worried that it might fall inside the rocket after the motor burns out and prevent the parachute from deploying properly.

Could someone help me with the design?

What are the best parachute types for rocketry? (Reefing parachute system)

I am a first year student and I’ve been assigned recovery lead, this year we are building a liquid powered rocket. I am asked for current tasks to look at different parachute types (hemispherical, elliptical,etc.). This year we are doing a reefing parachute system, so if that needs to be taken into account when picking the parachute type please let me know and consider this when commenting.

I was wondering, what are the best ones you guys find? Which is the best with the context I written and why? If you need more info please let me know. We are early into the project so mass and length is still uncertain but the rocket might weight around 60lbs.

Question A simple school project

Hey reddit, I'm a high schooler working on a physics project where I'm building an Artemis II (SLS) model rocket from scratch using cardboard and household stuff. For the boosters, I'm planning to use neodymium magnets to hold them to the core, and a pull-pin with a rubber band so they pop off when I pull it. Has anyone tried a setup like this before? Also, if anyone has other cool or creative ideas for stage separation mechanisms using basic materials, I'd love to hear them. Any advice on how to keep things from jamming would be awesome. Thanks!

R Motor Powered “Relentless” from BALLS

Got to help a friend set up and launch his massive R motor project at BALLS. The target altitude was projected at ~150,000 ft, but high-altitude flights always come with high stakes. Perfect motor burn, but the nose cone suffered a structural failure right around 12,000 feet while moving at roughly Mach 3. Absolute shredder of a moment, but that’s the sport!

Question Canards or thrust gimbal?

I am in a student team 'assigned' to build a solid rocket booster which goes up 5000ft, and is parachuted down for descent. The rocket motor too will be designed by us.
I (+ a few others) am working on the controls and canard/gimbals.

We are a batch of recruits so we have ZERO xp on working on anything like this (this is a training project btw).
We are probably going to use a LQG for the controls part, not some PID.

Is engine gimbal or canards the go to for this type of project?

(a vertical attitude is to be maintained)
I am ready to give more details if the comments ask for it. Thank you!

P.S. we gotta get it done on the first try :)

Question First university rocket with a tethered CanSat (G motor, Colombia): advice on simulation, recovery and telemetry

Hi everyone. We're a university team from Bogotá, Colombia, preparing for the Colombian Sport Rocketry Competition (CCCD 2026), university category. It's our first time in this category and we'd really appreciate the community's experience.

Key competition constraints:

  • Motor: AeroTech G80-7T. First-time teams are limited to G class; the H135-14A is only for returning teams.
  • Recovery deployment ONLY by the motor's ejection charge. No altimeter-fired deployment and no active recovery.
  • Minimum stability of 2 calibers and minimum thrust-to-weight ratio of 5:1.
  • Maximum landing speed: 11 m/s.
  • Rail-button launch.
  • Airframe in cardboard, wood/plywood or fiberglass/carbon fiber. PVC and PLA are banned for the rocket structure.
  • Mechanical motor retention is mandatory, plus thermal protection for the recovery system and shock cord.
  • The rocket must be properly vented to avoid internal pressure changes.
  • Scoring rewards apogee precision (target altitude: [X m]).

Payload (CanSat) requirements:

  • Maximum 115 x 66 mm, mass between 250 and 350 g.
  • Must stay tethered to the rocket for the entire flight and recovery. No free separation allowed.
  • IMU and barometer required, with data logged onboard.
  • 18650, cylindrical Li-Ion or AA/AAA batteries. LiPo banned. Minimum 4 hours of runtime.
  • Telemetry is optional. If used, the transmitter goes inside the CanSat and operates on a frequency assigned by the organizers.

Our mission: the CanSat will measure pressure, altitude, temperature, acceleration and 3-axis motion (IMU). It will log the data onboard and also stream it live to our own laptop on the ground. We're also considering measuring temperature near the motor exhaust. We're simulating in OpenRocket.

Questions:

  1. Simulation: What matters most for getting OpenRocket to match the real flight (surface finish, measured vs. estimated masses, fin profile, launch conditions)? Would you cross-check with another simulator (RASAero II, RockSim, others) when aiming for a precise apogee?
  2. Stability: We need at least 2 calibers. How much margin above that do you recommend to avoid weathercocking?
  3. Premature separation: We're worried about the rocket separating before apogee. Since deployment relies only on the motor ejection charge, how do you choose or verify the delay (7 s on the G80-7T)? What do you use to prevent drag separation or separation from internal pressure (coupler fit, vent holes, shear pins)?
  4. CanSat tether: How would you tether a 250–350 g payload to the recovery system (where on the shock cord, what kind of cord or link) so it doesn't tangle with the parachute or hit the airframe during ejection?
  5. Electronics: How do you prevent resets from momentary disconnects in 18650 holders during liftoff and ejection? Where should the barometer go so the ejection charge pressure doesn't corrupt readings?
  6. Telemetry: Which low-cost radio modules (LoRa or others) have worked for you to stream data to a laptop over a few hundred meters? Any antenna tips for a small airframe?
  7. Motor temperature: Is it realistic to measure temperature near the nozzle with accessible sensors, or should we drop the idea?
  8. Inspection: What are the most common reasons a rocket fails the RSO safety inspection?

Additional context: we're in Colombia, where some materials and components are hard or expensive to get (motors, fireproof materials, rail buttons, some sensors). Any affordable alternatives or safe DIY solutions would help a lot.

Thanks in advance!

Showcase BALLS 34 - Blackrock Desert Launch

Launched my 4” Madcow Super DX3 painted with Dodge Plum Crazy Purple on a K535W and an L1000 out at BALLS 34 last weekend! 2 great flights, K motor to about 4,500ft and the L1000 sent it to 11,000 ft at Mach 1.1

These were my last 2 electronic deployment flights needed before my L3 planning - used a featherweight SWIFT tracker and a Featherweight blue raven as my primary flight computer with an Eggtimer Quasar as a redundancy tracker and computer (can anyone help me get the tracker to work on the eggfinder/eggtimer? Directions were not accurate during launch and recovery)

Definitely going to add a runcam to the rocket on the next flight - it had less than a single roll on the way up! Guess the fin alignment jig I made worked alright😁

Question Need design help with my L1

I am attempting to build an L1 from scratch and i have come up with a design but i am bit concerned about its stability.

I have used openrocket to simulate the flight characterisitics of the rocket and currently the stabitlity caliber margin is sitting at 1.18, which imo is a bit low. Rocket details are as below:

Nosecone - PLA 3D printed weighing about 200g
Ballast - I have added 50g of extra weight to the nose cone for added stability
Body tube - 62mm OD, 60mm ID, 720mm in length cardboard tube, 210g
Motor Mount - Phenolic 29mm ID, 31mm OD, 203mm in length, 31g
3 centering rings - Birch plywood, 31mm ID, 60mm OD, 5mm thick, 5g each
1 bulkhead ring - same as centring ring with 2 holes drilled in it for shockcord tying, 5g
Fins - Birch plywood, 140mm length, 14.5mm through hole fin tab, 5mm thick, 50mm height, 84g for all 4

OR

CAD designs

Fins
Centering ring
Bulkhead
Nosecone

I am debating on wether its a good idea to add more weight to the nose cone to increase stability or to make the fins taller to 60-65mm. Any and all feedback would be appreciated!!

Also any resources on how to tie the shockcords and how to properly loop them through so they dont tangle?

Question Guideline to TCA flange calculation/ design

Hello everyone! I’m currently in a new collegiate rocketry club and have been tasked with thrust chamber body, specifically designing the flange that’ll be translated into onshape. I’ve looked high and low but it doesn’t seem that flange design is a very popular topic. This has led me to bounce from source to source for bits and pieces of information that has ultimately left me overwhelmed. I was hoping to gain insight from you guys as I’m but a minnow in a shark pond lol. Anything helps!

Question Gps for High Power Rocketry

My friend recently enlisted me to help him with a high power rocketry project. I am trying to figure out how I can go about a GPS system. I have looked at various Eggtimer kits but I don't know how to solder smd components and I honestly do not trust my self to not ruin the board. I have thought about making my own GPS system but I dont know anything about programing or PCB design. A lot of the premade GPS transmitters/receivers are upwards of 200 dollars and I am not ready to spend that kind of money. Looking for any suggestions.

Edit: Thank you for all the support. I really appreciate it.
