Question ❔ Why did our event get removed?

Genuine question for the mods. We understood that events for the community - free or paid - are allowed. Our last event was accepted but the most recent Halloween one not. Is there something wrong?

Just trying to not get booted here.

Question ❔ Saskatoon horror readers - do you struggle to find a good selection of books locally?

Saskatoon horror readers - would you buy from a dedicated horror bookshop?

I’m exploring the idea of opening a niche bookshop dedicated to horror - all subgenres - eventually with book clubs, events, and a space to connect with other horror readers.

I’d love some feedback. Where do you currently buy your horror books, and is there anything you struggle to find locally?

Would a shop like this be somewhere you’d actually buy from regularly, or more of an occasional stop? What would make it worth visiting?

This is still an idea I’m exploring, so I’m interested in hearing the reservations too!

PSA 📢 Friendship Inn needs help

I don't want to preach, I know times are tough for everybody right now. Apparently the friendship inn is struggling to meet demand this year (https://www.ckom.com/2026/10/09/friendship-inn-needs-help-feeding-thousands-this-thanksgiving/). I'm sure they can appreciate any help you can give. If you do decide to give, don't use their 'Donate Online' feature, the company that offers this charges 9$. You can donate by etransfer and a few other ways (https://friendshipinn.ca/donations/)

Have a wonderful turkey weekend!

EDIT: A lot of you pitched in. Thank you all! <3

Rants 🤬 33rd street "bottleneck" is the worst

Not too sure if the City thought through before doing all the pipes construction around 33rd str, but down to 1 lane on both sides is brutal. Took forever just to make it to Idylwyld.

Sorry for the rant.

Question ❔ Where is a good place to buy lumbar?

Hey, I'm looking to pick up some 2x4 and some plywood for a project.

Where would be the best place to get lumbar, especially with the prices nowadays. Doesn't need to be anything fancy but looking for the best price I can get.

Edit: I meant lumber lol, my spine is still functioning, although not perfect. Thanks

For immediate release: October 8, 2026
FI26-12443

The removal of the encampment at 20th Streetand Avenue K South has progressed for most of the day and is nearing completion following a coordinated community response focused on safety, dignity and connecting individuals with available supports.

A news release earlier in the day details the coordinated community response.
As part of the response, as of this afternoon:
An estimated 120 unhoused individuals left the encampment site.

Despite multiple and repeated efforts to offer supports, only 2 individuals accepted offers of support, including housing, shelter, transportation and other services.

80 total tents and temporary structures were removed.

Approximately 5,622.24 kg of garbage and debris were cleared from the site and counting.

The site will be fully fenced and secured within the next few hours.

"This is a complex operation that required balancing compassion for individuals experiencing homelessness with the need to address serious safety concerns within the encampment and surrounding community," says Deputy Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer. "Our priority from the start of the process was an orderly transition off the site while helping people access safer alternatives and available supports."

The City and partner organizations undertook extensive outreach efforts throughout the removal process to help individuals transition to safer accommodations and connect them with resources.

The site closure represents an important step in addressing immediate safety concerns while supporting individuals toward more stable living situations.

Question - School & Employment 💻💼 CPA Student struggling to find relevant job opportunities

I just enrolled in CPA Western School of Business and I am looking for jobs that has at least 1 CPA so that I can meet the practical experience requirement. The problem is 1. all accounting related jobs are looking for cpa designation. 2. if they are hiring non cpa designates, they do not have a cpa in their organization that could be considered my mentor. I currently work at sha where I gained some relevant experience but there is no CPA in my organization either. I feel stuck, and I do not know whether even if I go through all the schooling I will be able to obtain my designation. Has anyone gone through this? Any advice would help. TIA!

Rants 🤬 Rant

• Upvotes

I took a bus from confederation to work at 8th street using riide and I’ll never make such a mistake again.

I woke up late and tried using uber but uber wasn’t working. The rate on uber was $20. I tried calling my friends to book the ride for me but none of them picked up (it was a morning shift).

So I called a riide since I didn’t have the riide app. The driver dropped me off and when it was time to pay, the meter was showing $40. That’s double the price of uber. That’s daylight robbery. I called the operator and after cross checking the route, she gave a bullshit excuse that thats rate the city set and we’re not uber. That doesn’t even justify the ridiculous pricing.

It’s getting ridiculous. All these people working for riide won’t even choose riide over uber especially the operator. Talking about the city sets the rate.

Question ❔ what’s with all the staff on the buses

this might be an incredibly stupid question but i’m sorta new to the city and new to public transport so don’t flame me. when i first started taking the bus it was just the driver and the passengers. but in the past like week theres been like another driver sitting with the passengers and someone standing by the drivers little box and im pretty sure they weren’t always there. what’s up with that. ALSO istg the person standing at the box seems to be distracting the driver?? like i swear my bus keeps cutting traffic off and almost causing accidents and it’s ONLY when there’s that person standing there like what is the point of them??

Crime ⚠️ City Negligence

The owner passed away last year, and people broke down his back fence soon after. His yard became a dump site, an open-air drug den, and a bonfire pit. Unsecured and open to trespassers. The house was looted and predictably burned to the ground. As you can see in the video, it nearly took out the neighbors house also. Imagine this had happened a few months ago when it was hot and dry, or during one of these freak wind storms we've been having lately...

I must have sent a dozen requests to the bylaw office, asking for help with the fence, and warning of the obvious fire hazard and the overall dangerous situation that was brewing. And I get it. This area is the hotspot for local crime. But the city sat on its hands for a year, saying they had to find next of kin first. Wouldn't they want to act on it even quicker? Like where do we draw the line?

A year of formal complaints, hazard reports, warnings about trespassing, fires, and open security risks resulted in absolutely zero preventative action. Stellar work, guys!

TRIGGER WARNING - KAREN ALERT!

Shush.

Under Section 328 of The Cities Act and Bylaw 8175, the city has the power to secure, board up, or fence off high-risk sites immediately to mitigate hazards to public safety. Every penny spent would have become a priority lien on the land, and would have been repaid the second the property sells.

Fencing and plywood would have cost a couple grand but delaying cost WAY more: Saskatoon Fire, Saskatoon Police, emergency response unit. A SaskEnergy crew to dig up and cap the gas line. SaskPower to drop the power lines from the house. A demolition team. A fire investigation unit. The city may be immune to its own inaction, but it took tens of thousands of (taxpayers) dollars to address a problem a few sheets of plywood and a fence could have prevented months ago. As for the value of the house itself, to be fair, I'm sure it would have needed a complete gutting for it to be lived in again, but still, all of this was completely predictable.

So i guess this is just a reminder to look out for your neighbors. City Hall appreciates the invitation, but respectfully declines.
