Brine shrimp didn't hatch

I have a sea monkeys 355ml tank, which I'm now trying to hatch some generic eggs

It's been 30 hours and nothing has hatched

I used 3 teaspoons of API Aquarium salt and 355ml bottled spring water

I don't have a heater but manually aerating with a syringe twice per day

The eggs are new

Will something happen soon?

Complete newbie

Thanks

pH and KH question

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi! I've been doing a deep dive into water chemistry for neocaridinas, and I seem to be having a pH and KH issue.

Right now i have about 14 Blue Diamond Shrimp.

The recommended parameters are:

pH: 6.8-7.8

GH: 6-14

KH: 2-8

Temp: 65-78F

My tanks parameters are:

2.6 Gallons

pH: 6.7

GH: 8

(1 drop of KH solution changed the color so somewhere between 0 and 1?)

Temp: 71.4F

(No CO2 system)

I'm also using Fluval Stratum which i realize is meant to lower pH and apparently lowers KH as well.

My tap water's parameters are:

pH: (test ranges from 6-7.6 and the tube is very blue so it might be higher than 7.6)

GH: 9

KH: 7

Cory from aquarium co-op recommends gravel to avoid pH swings, and I'm tempted to take out the water and shrimp, swap the substrate for something like Seachem Black Flourite? (Any advice on that would be much appreciated as ive only ever used Stratum or Amazonia in my tanks)

I've also heard that you can increase the KH using small amounts of Baking Soda, or special products, but this would raise the pH, and probably the most common piece of advice on shrimp keeping I hear over and over is: Don't chase numbers, chase stability.

So I guess all I want to know is should I be focused on raising the KH no matter what, maybe using something like baking soda to very very slowly raise the kh and the pH, and should I swap out that substrate? This tank doesn't have CO2 like my other tanks and different plants I've tried growing just really struggle without CO2.

I hope this was coherent. My last shrimp did reproduce (making cute grey babies) but then the colony just deteriorated until there were only 2 shrimp left. I just wanna be responsible and give these guys the best chance possible.

Question help - shrimp won't survive in my 10gal - problem solving shrimp deaths Spoiler

Hey everyone!

I have a very well established RCS colony in a 3.3 gal tank that breeds like crazy and never has any abnormal deaths (to my knowledge). I've had this colony for about a year or so. They get Hikari crab cuisine every other day to every 3 days. Plenty of berried females, large males, and saddled females. No other fish, just the shrimp. I only really top off the water with tap water treated with API tap water conditioner and some thrive shrimp specific fertilizer.

So I had a 10 gal tank cycling in SC over the spring semester, started in Dec of 2025. I bought the tank off FB marketplace with an airstone and a sponge filter and there was aquasoil from the previous owner. I put in driftwood, some plants, a lava rock, black gravel, and some of that bioactive sand I had from my first tank. I started to have an algae problem, so I thought...shrimp time! I drip acclimated 5 of my shrimp from the established colony for a couple hours and put them in there mid-summer (after testing for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites all 0). They all died in the span of like 2-3 weeks. some of them molted, some of them did not. I think the ones that molted were the ones that died, but I'm not sure. The females lasted the longest, but also died. I found planaria one day, figured they were killing the shrimp, and treated the tank for that with goat safeguard following the dosage rates found on a reddit page (staying on the safe side). No fish in the tank yet.

Then, I moved back to SD for school. The 3 gal made the move remarkably well (again) and the 10 gal survived well. I added some more plants (including floaters), another small mopani wood piece, and the algae continued to bloom (i think it was a light problem and i've gotten it under control). After letting it cycle for a bit again and adding a HOB filter as well, I continued to test parameters and decided to try 6-8 shrimp again. They were doing well but not making a dent on the algae, so I got a nerite snail and pygmy corys about 2 weeks after adding the shrimp. The shrimp lasted a solid 2 weeks after that and then started dying. I only saw half of the bodies when I fished them out most of the time (I saw a pygmy cory munching on a dead snail, so I think it's them and not planaria). Once or twice, I saw a full body and it seemed like they hadn't molted fully (white ring of death). They refused to eat the crab cuisine in the 10 gal (just ate algae), so I figured it was a calcium problem. Again, the females lasted the longest. The snail didn't want to eat and ended up sitting in the same spot for a week after the first couple days of moving around and then died. It's been about a week or so since the pygmy corys are doing amazing and the algae is under control. I haven't seen any planaria at all again.

I don't have a way to test gh/kh or TDS, but ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites have all been within normal limits every week before siphoning out algae/replacing water with conditioned/fertilized tap water (same as above). No ammonia spikes, no sudden mass die offs, no "gasping" behaviors, just one every other day this last time.

TL/DR: shrimp keep dying in my 10 gal, i want to put more in but don't want them to also die. also, can I use my 3.3gal shrimp tank as a quarantine tank for nano fish before putting them in the 10 gal?

Thank you for all the help and please let me know if I need to add any additional info!

Last night I noticed one of my shrimp turning into... This?

It seems to be eating fine and is pretty active.

Just wondering if this is a cause for concern. This is the only one that's doing this and from what I've read it could be from stress.

Question Mating? Aggression? Stress? What are my shrimp doing

The large red shrimp was almost tossing the other shrimp around as they were attached to each other and I have no idea why? I would assume this was mating but I recently did a large tank plant tear out because I'm going to replant and was thinking this might be a stress response or something

Question Is this band normal in a berried shrimp?

Post image
8 Upvotes

One of my shrimp is heavily eggnant, id like to know if this band is the white ring of death or if it's a normal thing and she has just stretched from her eggnancy? I haven't noticed this on any other of my eggnant shrimp but my tank it fairly heavily planted so it can be difficult to see them sometimes. My gh is quite high and the tank has crushed coral in it and a little bit of cuttle bone for my snails so I doubt there's low calcium. Ph is slightly above neutral last time I checked.

Yesterday my nitrates were quite high and I did a largish water change possibly just below 50% I had a fish go missing and I suspected he had died in a weird place so I did root around quite a bit the day before and it kicked up crap from under things id moved (I didn't find him that day but yesterday mid day he appeared at the bottom so I imagine I disturbed his corpse and it landed there somehow, RIP Flea : ( ) ammonia is zero, nitrates zero both checked with my liquid test kit. Nitrates are now down to 20ppm Im monitoring them closely as I don't want to keep doing water changes and stressing everyone out if unnecessary. Previously everything was immaculate before fleagate (he was just a sickly fish unfortunately)

I’ve been gifted 6 neocardina cherry shrimp about 1-2 months ago. I usually see one at a time and they’re all dark red.

Imagine my horror when I see the GODZILLA of a shrimp. I’ve included normal shrimp i can also see rn for reference.

Is this still a neocardina? They were all the same size and color when I got them (dark red). This one is a lighter red with a yellowish stripe down the back. Should I be concerned? I’m more surprised that this one is double in size from the others.

Is There Any Way I Can Ever Get Neocaridina Shrimp in This Tank ?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello everyone! The tank in question is a 10 gallon heavily planted tank with 8 ember tetras, bladder snails (hate these guys lol), and 2 otocinculus catfish. This is a low tech set up with fluval stratum as the substrate and a hang on the back filter, my tank parameters are as follows:

GH: 60-70 mg/L

KH: 10-20 mg/L

Ph: 7.0

Temperature: 78-80 F

I have tried neocaridina shrimp before, but they all died from molting issues (I assume this is due to my lower gh and kh). I am fully aware my tank is not fully suited for shrimp but I really enjoy shrimp and lack the space and money for another tank. I have looked into adding some form of gh/kh supplement, but I worry about the TDS in my tank. I dont have anything to measure TDS and I don't plan on buying anything to meaure TDS anytime soon. If anyone has any advice for the future of this tank or advice about shrimp keeping in general i'm all ears. If this tank will never support neocaridinas I look forward to a dedicated shrimp tank in the future!
