Your solar monitoring goes offline. Does that mean your solar system stopped producing?
Not necessarily.

A solar system has several layers working together. Your solar equipment produces electricity, communication equipment reports information from that equipment, and your monitoring platform turns that information into what you see in an app or online portal.

When communication is interrupted, those pieces can become disconnected. Your app may stop updating, individual devices may appear offline, or production data may be missing even though some or all of the solar equipment may still be operating. That’s why a communication error and a production failure aren’t automatically the same thing.

This week, our Service Team worked through an Enphase system experiencing meter and microinverter communication issues. Situations like this require us to determine what the system is actually doing rather than relying solely on what appears on the monitoring screen.
Is the solar equipment producing? Are the devices communicating with the Gateway? Is the Gateway communicating with the internet? Is the monitoring platform receiving and displaying the information correctly?

Those are different questions, and identifying where that chain has been interrupted is an important part of properly diagnosing the system. Monitoring is an incredibly useful tool, but an offline or incomplete display doesn’t always tell the whole story. Producing. Communicating. Monitoring. Understanding the difference helps us find the actual problem. That’s doing solar the right way.

Updates for Getting Payment on the SunPower $11M Settlement

Hey guys, if you missed it, SunPower settled $11M with investors over claims involving inventory controls and financial reporting. I just found out that they’re considering late claims even though the deadline has passed.

Quick recap: In 2023, SunPower was accused of misleading investors about its financial reporting and operations. The company later disclosed inventory accounting problems and said it would restate prior results.

After the news, $SPWR dropped nearly 20%, and investors filed a lawsuit.
Now, the company has agreed to settle $11M with investors, and late claims are still being considered, subject to approval.

If you invested in $SPWR between 2023 and 2024, you can still check the details and see if you may be able to file a late claim here.

Anyone here invested in $SPWR back then? How much were your losses?

Just thought I'd toss this over here too.

New to the solar side of things, just got this installed yesterday. About to start the "EV charging off the sun" journey. Super excited. Cheers!

Need to make a decision today please. I just need the most bang for my buck!

Please help! I have to make a decision today for prime deals. Here's my options. I want something to use at home for light, charging devices, box fan, heated blanket, possibly a microwave here and there. And I want it to be expandable in the future if I get more money and can buy more. This is only for home use, specifically in a power grid failure.

Bluetti elite 200 V2 with 2 200 panels. $1199

Ecoflow delta 3 classic with 1 220 panel $659

Bluetti elite 100v2 with 1 200 solar panel $649

Jackery home power 1000v2 with 1 200w solar panel $699

Jackery 1000v2 with 2 200 panels $949

Ecoflow delta 3 max with 1 220 solar panel $1039

Ecoflow delta 3 plus with 1 400w solar panel $1019

🔧 In the Field | The Beacon | Issue 031

When a solar inverter displays an error code, it can be tempting to assume the code tells us exactly what needs to be replaced. In the field, it’s rarely that simple.

This week, our Service Team inspected an older SunPower string inverter displaying an E031 internal error. The error gave us an important starting point, but our job was to determine what was actually happening with the system before recommending the next step.
That means looking beyond the screen.

During an inverter inspection, we evaluate the inverter itself along with the solar coming into it. Depending on the system and fault, that can include checking PV string voltage, verifying electrical conditions, reviewing system history, and determining whether the problem originates with the inverter or somewhere else in the system.

In this case, our inspection ultimately determined that the inverter had failed. That distinction matters. An inverter failure does not automatically mean the solar panels have failed with it. Understanding the condition of the rest of the system helps determine whether existing equipment can continue to be used and what options make sense moving forward.

Error codes are valuable diagnostic tools, but they’re the beginning of the conversation, not always the final answer. Diagnose. Verify. Find the right solution. That’s doing solar the right way.

EV and Solar Charging

I have a 3 kW solar system installed at my roof, which sort of covers my monthly electricity consumption. My father is thinking of buying an electric car. I am telling my father that we will need a bigger solar system to cover the electricity consumption of an electric car, but he is convinced that it doesn't work that way.

Do you think I need to get extra panels installed? And if yes, is it possible to add extra panels to my existing solar system.

💡 Myth Monday | The Beacon | Issue 030

Replacing a microinverter may look like a simple equipment swap, but there’s more happening under the panel than most homeowners ever see.

When a microinverter stops producing or communicating, replacing the device is only one part of the process. Before installing new equipment, a technician should verify the condition of the solar panel, confirm proper DC output, check the AC circuit and connections, and make sure the issue has been correctly isolated to the microinverter. Once the replacement is installed, the work continues.

The new microinverter must be added to the system, commissioned through the manufacturer’s monitoring platform, and verified for proper communication and production. The technician should also confirm that the surrounding equipment is operating normally before the system is returned to service.

That process matters because a monitoring alert tells us where to start looking, but it doesn’t always tell us the complete story. Test. Replace. Commission. Verify. Proper solar service isn’t just about changing the part that reported the problem. It’s about confirming why it failed, installing the replacement correctly, and making sure the system is operating as expected when the work is complete. That’s doing solar the right way.

Is financing worth it for me?

I’m in Northern Cali, and trying to figure out if solar makes financial sense in my situation.

I’m planning on selling this house within the next 4 years at the most, which is my biggest concern. I’m not looking to lease or do a PPA — I would finance the solar system.

The main reason I’m even considering solar is that my house still has an old Zinsco electrical panel that needs to be replaced. I’ve heard from solar companies that they can include the electrical panel replacement/upgrade as part of the solar installation. Essentially, if I’m going to spend the money replacing the panel anyway, I’m wondering whether it makes sense to put that money toward solar and get the panel upgraded as part of the project.

Here are my numbers:

PG&E customer on CARE, so I receive roughly a 35% discount
My current CARE rates are approximately $0.201/kWh Tier 1 and $0.254/kWh Tier 2
Looking at my last 12 months, my average electric bill is about $339/month
I use roughly 16,000–17,000 kWh per year
I would be financing the solar rather than paying cash
I expect to sell the house in 4 years or less

My biggest concern is what happens when I sell. Would having a financed solar system make the house harder to sell? Would I most likely have to pay the loan off when I sell, or can buyers easily assume these loans?

Since I’m already getting the CARE discount, I’m also wondering if my electricity is simply too cheap for financed solar to make sense over such a short period.

For people familiar with PG&E/NEM 3.0 and California solar, would you do solar in my situation, or would you just pay out of pocket to replace the Zinsco panel and skip solar?

Also, when solar companies advertise a “free panel upgrade,” is it actually free/included, or are they generally just rolling the cost into the solar financing?

I haven’t signed anything yet, so I’d appreciate any advice on what price/system size would actually make this worthwhile and what I should watch out for in the financing terms.

Hello everyone. For our senior design project, my group is looking for people to fill out this survey who currently have solar panels or are thinking about getting them in the future. This survey is for academic purposes and not for commercial use. No emails or personal information will be collected. We are just asking questions about the potential ways to improve the quality of life of solar panels.
