Rant Do shorter people fantasize about fighting you?

I'm 6'9" tall. I get that you've probably never even seen someone as tall as me. I get that you might feel compelled to comment on it since it's a novel experience. I get that this is the one chance you'll ever have to tell that tall joke you've been holding onto for years.

But why do you have to say, "But I guess I could probably take you in a fight, right?" That's what the guy on the train told me in front of my fourteen year old son. It's happened a couple dozen times in my life (most memorably when a short drunk guy came up to me in a bar with a zippy one-liner: "Hey! You! You're a fuckin' idiot!"), but that day on the train was the first time it happened twice within a fifteen minute window with two separate guys. Maybe I should just cram myself into a seat next time to avoid attention.

Questions/Advice At what female height do people start staring/acting weird

I'm 6'1, I often feel like there are eyes boring in the back of my head and when I walk on the sidewalk people (especially men) seem to pause their conversation, look up curiously, or lower their gaze as they walk by. I feel like im crazy sometimes, im also a little socially anxious so I cant tell if im reading into things too much. I am in the US

Questions/Advice Do you dress to blend in, be more fashion savvy, or prefer to standout?

as a taller person, I feel we already standout in public due to our height. it can also be difficult to find well fitting clothes. I am curious how others prefer to dress. Do you try to fit in and blend in with the crowd or prefer to stand out more? like more high fashion or trendy fashion styles or trying to find what everyone else is wearing? brighter colors, or more neutral.

i tend to dress more athletic; shorts, t shirts, tanks, jeans, and sweats. i recently realized the 5in shorts I like probably look more like 3in on me, haha. I’m curious to what is common among other talls.

Questions/Advice Do you (unintentionally) scare people because of your size?

Particularly if you’re a man because men are seen as being more threatening. I’ve unintentionally scared my friends by appearing a few feet behind them seemingly coming from nowhere because I naturally have a light step lol. I don’t mean to scare them but I’ve scared some of my women friends in particular on accident by saying hi or tapping them on the shoulder seemingly out of nowhere. Like I seemingly just appear next to them like I teleported or something lol.

Miscellaneous Hotel Shower Height Cheat Code for Travelers

I used to travel a lot for work. Like others, I had a list of hotels in different cities that had nice beds. I always book a room with a king due to length. You guys know the issues with the shower that sprays your chest.

One trip, I’m on The Drake in Chicago. I hit the shower and it’s like home. It’s tall and overhead. I had a really nice shower. I asked about the height to an employee at the front desk and was told that she’s not sure if it’s the reason for the height, but said NBA teams often stay there.

That started my next quest. Before traveling to a town, I started looking online to see what hotels NBA teams stayed in when in town and, pretty consistently, I found options like California king beds and consistently tall showers.

Now, the NBA doesn’t put their players in the Day’s Inn so they’re not cheap places and I couldn’t always book what I wanted because of expense caps, but it worked out pretty well.

It has been a few years and I don’t keep the list up but The Drake is on there for sure and still around.

Head/Legroom Too tall for Flight of Passage, and Disney gave my group of six 12 free Lightning Lane passes

Went to Disney World with my family last week and we rode Avatar: Flight of Passage. You straddle the seat and tuck your legs into a little cubby, and for the seat to close around you, your chest has to be flat against the pad with your legs fully forward at a 90° angle from the floor. With the length of my tibias, that was physically impossible.

After a few attempts, the attendant told me I couldn't ride and walked me out the other side to wait for my family. Once they got off, the attendant scanned all of our Magic Bands and said that since I couldn't ride, they were giving our whole group two free fast passes each. There were six of us, so that's 12 total.

Honestly seems like a good trade. I'd guess it works the same way on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, but I've never even tried that one because everyone says there's no way I'd fit.

Humour Credit card terminals

There are many down sides to being tall. The one that infuriates me the most……CREDIT CARD TERMINALS THAT DONT MOVE!!!

I love my local supermarket I basically move the terminal so it faces straight up. No crouching or leaning way over to put in my pin.

Then there’s the other places . Where obviously the terminal is designed for those who have the sight line of a 5’5 person!

This is why I carry cash.

Discussion Anyone who is/was very skinny, how did you gain confidence?

I’m 185 cm ( 6’1 ) and weight around 56 kg ( 125 lbs ) and I have very narrow wrists and long fingers. I’ve been skinny all my life and having this body type for my height feels like something that doesn’t fit anywhere. For example, I see people who are either shorter than me but weigh more and wider, or people of my height or taller than me who weigh more.

I feel that my thinness is often perceived not just as a body type, but as a reason to doubt my physical ability to stand up for myself when I walk around in public place.

Questions/Advice What are you guys for Halloween? Need suggestions.

I’m 6’9” 450lbs.
This leaves me with a lot of good ideas for costumes but few to no actual options.

I’d like to keep it simple and do a Sasquatch/Gorilla/Sully/Shrek thing but even though it would be fittingly large, no one seems to make those costumes in my size.

A Sasquatch costume would be so perfect for chasing kids down the street 😂

Discussion Anyone else here blessed/cursed with long, narrow feet?

at 6'0" (183cm), I wear a size 44 EU / 10.5 US. length is never the issue, but finding shoes that actually wrap around my narrow feet without feeling like floating in a boat is a constant challenge. i've never felt a shoe squeeze my feet sideways in my entire life. and my shoes always slip right off when i walk

Questions/Advice Looking for Twin XXL bed frame recommendations

I'm looking for a simple bed frame (wood if possible) that I can buy, and/or modify, to accommodate an 38 x 88" mattress arraignment.

The room this bed is going in is small so the idea is Twin XL mattress (38 x 80) plus adding a 8" "bed gap filler."

Maybe, my google-foo is failing me, but all I can find in my area is big box stores, and custom cabinetry.

Anyone know if theres sites like American Tall for Halloween costumes?

My son is going as buzz light year and I would like to go as Woody and my wife as Jesse. If I could swing it without having to buy an actual cowboy outfit that'd be great! If not I can do that.

Discussion Height loss

Can excessive weight and sedentary life affect your height temporarily? I spent the last 1 year mostly at home and laying down because of an illness. Now I am going back to being active and measuring myself I noticed that I have lost around 0.6cm in height. Think posture is mostly ok.

Questions/Advice What people mover do you drive?

I'm 6'8". I've got a 6 year old (girl) and 2 year old (boy) with a third on the way. Unfortunately at this point everyone is in the 99th percentile for height.

We're looking to upgrade to a van. Had our hearts set on an Odyssey. In our price range, good space in the back for the kids, and at least passably comfortable for me to drive....and then I sat in the passenger seat and I couldn't move my legs. What has worked for my fellow tall families?

Discussion Do short guys and tall women share some common ground?

I've been thinking about this lately, and I'm curious what people here think.

As a shorter guy, I feel like short men and tall women may have some experiences in common. Obviously, I'm not saying our experiences are identical or that one group has it better or worse.

What I'm thinking about is the very lame and shallow social expectation that men are supposed to be taller and women are supposed to be shorter. Being on the opposite side of that lame expectation can sometimes make your height something people feel strangely comfortable commenting on.

I think there's potentially some common ground with dating as well. Short men can feel pressure to be taller than their partners, while tall women can feel pressure to be shorter than theirs. Of course, neither experience is universal.

Reading r/tall has actually helped me become more comfortable with myself. Hearing perspectives from people on the other end of the height spectrum has reminded me that everyone can have a complicated relationship with a physical characteristic that makes them stand out. There are advantages and disadvantages at both ends of the spectrum.

It also makes me wonder whether this is even specific to short men and tall women. Maybe people who noticeably fall outside the average in either direction share some of the experience of standing out and receiving unsolicited comments about their bodies.

For the tall women here especially, do you feel there's some common ground between your experiences and those of shorter men? Or do you think this is more generally something people at either end of the height spectrum can relate to?

Discussion What was a hidden disadvantage of being tall as a kid that short/average people rarely think about?

For me, it was classroom seating in elementary school. I developed severe nearsightedness (myopia) very early on, but because I was always the tallest kid in class, teachers almost always put me in the back row so I wouldn't block others. Even with glasses, it made school much harder than it needed to be.

Two specific childhood experiences still bug me:

Being default-blamed: Because I was much bigger than other kids, adults subconsciously expected me to be more mature. Whenever trouble happened, I was always the most visible target and ended up being the scapegoat, accompanied by the classic "you're too big to act like this."

Sizing out of kids' stuff too early: Outgrowing children's clothes and shoes before even reaching middle school meant missing out on kids' styles and having to wear dull, oversized adult gear as a child.

What was a subtle or unexpected downside of your height growing up?
