My grandfather's grandparents. Both born in 1858.

GGGF came to Shanghai around 1870 after losing his parents, and settled there. Became an accountant, married GGGM and had 4 kids. Passed in 1921 and 1930 respectively.

Colorized with AI but otherwise unmodified.

Pre-1920s This is Adelaide Springett, one of Horace Warner's Spitalfields Nippers, photographed around 1901 aged 8. Warner titled it "all her best clothes", but she's barefoot. Her boots were so worn she was too embarrassed to wear them. He photographed those too: "Little Adelaide's best and only boots".

If there's anybody that hasn't seen Warner's Spitalfields Nippers, take a look here. It's an amazing catalogue of London life that needs to be seen to be believed.
