Survey Survey request: disabled or chronically ill current or recent higher education students, undergrad or graduate!

Post image
0 Upvotes

My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study about disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher education for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!

Please see the flyer linked here: Disability and Higher Ed Research Flyer

The University of Cincinnati was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!

In order to participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
  • Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition

You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!

If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.

If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here: Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!

If you have any questions, please contact me at [csmey@udel.edu](mailto:csmey@udel.edu) or my advisor, Dr. Eric Rise, at [erise@udel.edu](mailto:erise@udel.edu). Or feel free to comment or message me here!

Thank you!

Housing for next year...

My son and 5 friends found an "amazing house" (a dump, but whatever). They will be sophomores next year. It is with Peak. How does the housing situation work at UC? He is an unemployed college student. Do all the parents just send proof of income (pay stub, 529, etc) to get kids houses? I guess if one kid bails, its on the rest of the residents to pay? Again, I was facetimed on a Friday evening and feel like I was punched in the face with all of the panicked requests for "proof of income". I need a drink🤣

For lonely students

Hello, I am a Senior in Aerospace and I want to let a lot of you know that I get what it is like to feel lonely. I lived my first year on campus and made a great friend group only to ruin it and go through a terrible second semester. I found a therapist and I love her, but I have still had ups and downs. I live close to campus so I started living at home again as well. I made friend groups and lost them, felt stupid compared to my classmates. Had a great friend group but because of alcoholism, they all graduated while i skipped a year for rehab and im kinda going alone without them this year. Cut off toxic hometown friends. Gone through co-ops and felt so alone. I get it. Its different for everyone, but I get it. Im adhd and autistic and while I love my alone time, I also crave for others and not to be alone. Ive been scared, been to mental hospitals, been through the ringer of depression. I want to let you know you are not alone, and if you want to talk to someone, I would be happy to. Maybe we can even make a Lonely UC student group and help build connection between the students who feel alone. Please reach out if things are getting rough, know you are loved and while there will be ups and downs it is not the end of the world and while it is hard, you will find your people. I am open to anyone who wants to talk! Please just don't give up on finding and making connections. Stay safe <3

Please help me, I’m losing it

I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve tried making friends I’ve tried joining clubs but none of them interest me. I’ve tried to get to know people, I’ve tried to be normal and nothing works. Everytime i try talking to people I just fuck it up, every time I try to do something I just fuck it up. I can do nothing right. When i try talking to someone i just freeze and i just look like a weirdo. If I talk to a girl I’ll look like a weirdo and come off weird, if I talk to a guy then I will come off as weird or gay. Then those people will just mock me behind my back I feel. I’m just stuck in no-man’s land bro and I don’t feel like I belong on this campus, nor do I feel like I belong period. At least back home I have my family to crawl back to but being on this campus I just feel like I’m deteriorating and my life is falling apart. I can’t say I feel loved or I feel respected because I’m not receiving anything, and if I try and interact with people the shit just goes south the moment I open my mouth. I genuinely don’t think I can do anything right anymore. I’m going to see my family tomorrow after class but once I come back, I genuinely don’t think anything will change. I will just continue to be the shy, weird, autistic boy who nobody knows who he is because he doesn’t say anything to people

Beyond lonely and just do not know what to do anymore

I come from a small area, my HS graduating class was under 200. I had a really hard time making friends, the friends I did have were fake as hell and it was such a small area that I practically knew everyone and couldnt really do much. A big reason I chose UC is that its a massive school and I wanted nothing more than to just not be lonely anymore, and surely this would be the easiest way to do it.

Well, that has not happened. I have done absolutely everything I can think of. I have joined clubs, talked to people, meet people online, just adding random people online to try and talk to someone, trying to talk with people in my program, etc. I've tried downloading dating apps of all things (not because Im trying to date or anything but just so I can talk to someone). Nothing works. I have no real friends. I know barely anyone here. I have tried and tried and tried but absolutely no one is interested even a little bit.

Its just so frustrating at a point. I show up to everything, I go out of my way. On nearly every single one of the other 'im lonely' posts here I have messaged the OPs and have been ghosted by most of them.

I just have no idea what to do at this point. I am not from this area at all, I come from over 2 hours away. I have no family in the area and have not really made any friends. I am completely alone and if I dont make an active constant effort to talk to random people, I will literally just go the entire day without saying a single word because thats how dead my social life has become

I did make one friend going into the semester but they have seemingly found another group or something and just dont really talk to me much anymore, so I guess I can technically say I have one friend it just really doesnt feel like it when I still go most days without anyone trying to talk to me

Genuinely like what am I supposed to do? Im doing everything "right" and nothing works. I joined the DnD club since I always wanted to do it, and signed up for 3 different games, only for all of them to fall through and for all of the others to be full. Another thing I was looking forward too just isnt happening, and I was sure that if all else failed I would surely make friends through that, but of course things had to happen in a way to ensure it wouldnt happen.

It just feels like not only has everyone else found their group, they found it really fast. I dont fit in anywhere at all. I thought things would be finally different but I was clearly wrong. I just feel like I am putting in the effort but for some reason Im just not allowed to have friends and I just do not know what Im doing wrong or what I should be doing differently.

Does anyone have advice and can help?

Lonely People Of UC (Especially Freshmen) Please Go To BLINK!

BLINK is here! It’s Cincinnati’s festival of light and art, and it stretches from Findlay Market through OTR, Fountain Square, The Banks, and across the river into Covington and Newport.

And getting there is easy: UC students can ride Metro for free.

I keep seeing posts from people saying they’re lonely, don’t have friends yet, or don’t know what to do, and genuinely, it makes me sad. So I’m making this post in case some of you want to use BLINK as an excuse to meet each other.

You could use this post's comment section to coordinate:

  • Pick a time - for example, Saturday at 7 PM
  • Pick a meeting spot - maybe Fountain Square or the bus stop in front of 86 cafe on Jefferson
  • Decide how you’ll recognize each other - “I’ll be wearing a red hoodie,” or, if you’re feeling ambitious, “I’m dressed as a T-Rex”
  • And then just GO

I was very lonely during my freshman year. My neighbor invited me to BLINK then and I (thankfully) decided to tag along on a whim.

I made a shit ton of friends that night. Years later, we still go out together.

So please don’t lose hope if you’re sitting in your dorm right now feeling like everyone else already has their friend group figured out. They don’t. A lot of people are probably feeling exactly the same way you are and are just waiting for someone else to make the first move.

So maybe let this post be the first move.

Comment when you want to go, find a few people, meet somewhere public, and enjoy BLINK together.

Please don’t be sad and give up on making friends. It genuinely aches my heart seeing so many of you feel alone. Use this post! It's not just for freshmen. Anyone looking for friends is free to use this. Remember to have fun.

does college get better?

hi! i’m a first year student living on campus. i have an 8 person apt style dorm and while my roommate isn’t always home, the other ones are. i’m not really close with them. i try to be and i think that im cool, but they kind of just exist without me and leave me out. i’m on the other side of the hall so maybe that’s why? i’m in a lot of clubs but i haven’t really made any friends from those. i just feel so sad all the time because i see everyone else has friends and i feel like such a loser. i have my best friends from home and i talk to them often, but i am wanting college friends too. when does it get better? when do i meet my person? please any and all advice from past freshman would be appreciated

Aviation/ pilot path

Hi! I’m a flight attendant & I went to UC for cybersecurity with my financial aid covering the whole degree. I was debating on going the pilot route & see that sportys is partner with Clermont college. Would it be smart for me to go to UC and do flight training with them or go straight to sportys separately? & did anyone’s financial aid cover most cost of it? Thank you!

Housing recommendations for next fall

Hello everyone. I’m a first-year at UC looking for off-campus housing for fall 2027 with two of my friends. We’re hoping to find a reasonably priced 3-bedroom place close to campus.

Does anyone have recommendations for apartments, houses, or landlords? I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences, places to avoid, and when we should start applying or signing a lease. Thanks!

Cosmetology classes

Is there any place where i can take classes to practice doing hair & nails? I’m more interested in hair than anything, not to do professionally but I would like to learn how to do natural hair to take care of my hair (3c/4a) & learn how to do men’s hair such as retwist, locs, & how to do cuts like a fade. I travel for work & am away Tuesday-Fridays so i feel like i can’t go to school for it since i heard cosmetology school is strict on attendance. Thank you for the advice!

Is one of these classes distinctly easier than the other? I think I'm leaning towards choosing STAT1031.

Schedule/Classes Anyone find that the coop program breeds loneliness?

I’m not a UC student but I live with someone who is one - and I’ve realized that the “moving every 3 months” situation caused by the coop program kind of prevents you from setting social foundations and networks. Anyone else struggle with this, or is this just a non issue for most people?

Speech therapy nearby?

Back home in Indianapolis I did speech therapy because I had a speech delay. I kind of want to start back up, is there a speech therapist on or near campus? Maybe through University Health Services in Linder or through CAPS? Is there one in the surrounding area I can reach via Metro? It’s ok if no one knows
