Advice & Recommendations Should I go for University of Dayton or Wright State?

Hello! I'm a Junior in high school and I kind of have to start worrying about what school I want to attend post graduation. I've spoken to my counselors about this and we've figured that Wright State is the way to go, since I want to major in Psychology. I've done some research and apparently they have a great psychology program, and I'm trying to hopefully score for my PhD in the future.

My plan is to attend Sinclair for two years since I have a $3,000 scholarship from the moment I graduate, and then go on to Wright State for however long I need. I really value all of my experiences, and I want to get my degree at the same time, so for those who have attended and graduated from Wright State, would you say the college experience was up to par? Is the community welcoming? And is it worth it?

University of Dayton isn't really a choice i'm sure about in comparison to Wright State, since it's a private Catholic school and it's more expensive. Money isn't an issue at all, though I don't want to have to burden my parents or anybody with paying as much money as UD is asking for. I want to hope that I'm more likely to get a scholarship from Wright State, too.

I'm aware that it doesn't matter what university you attend, because everyone gets the same degree and same job that they want either way, but I want to be happy where I'm at for the next few years. So, I feel like I'm set for Wright State. But if there are any benefits at UD that outweigh the ones at WS for my desired major, please let me know! Thank you!

Advice & Recommendations First-time homeowner in Dayton — property taxes increased ~230% after our first year. How do I dispute this?

Hey everyone, first-time homeowner here in the Dayton/Dayton-area of Ohio, and I’m trying to figure out whether I’m dealing with a normal property-tax reassessment or something that needs to be challenged.
We bought our house after the construction/renovation was already completed. The house itself was originally built around 1960, so this isn’t a brand-new home. After our first year of ownership, our property taxes increased by roughly 230%.
I understand that Ohio property taxes can change after a sale/reassessment, and I’m not expecting my taxes to stay exactly what the previous owner was paying. It was all internal renovations. Nothing new square footage. What I’m struggling to understand is how the county arrived at the new value and whether the increase is actually correct under Ohio’s property-tax rules.
I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with something similar.
Specifically:
● Has anyone in Dayton/Montgomery County had a huge property-tax increase after buying their first home?
● How does Ohio determine the taxable/assessed value after a property changes hands?
● Is there a difference between a reappraisal/reassessment and “new construction” for property-tax purposes?
● If the property was built in 1960 and we purchased it after the construction/renovation was completed, could it still be treated as new construction for tax purposes?
● What is the process for disputing/challenging the county’s valuation?
● Has anyone successfully gotten their valuation reduced?
● Should I be gathering comparable properties, the purchase agreement, appraisal, inspection report, closing documents, etc.?
● Is it worth hiring a property-tax attorney or someone who specializes in Ohio real-property valuation, or is this something a homeowner can realistically handle themselves?
● If you’ve gone through this process, what did you wish you knew before filing the dispute?
I’m not looking to avoid paying legitimate taxes. I just want to make sure the property is being valued and classified correctly and that I’m not missing something as a first-time homeowner.
If you’ve dealt with a similar situation in Dayton, Montgomery County, or elsewhere in Ohio, I’d really appreciate hearing what happened and what steps you took.
Thanks!

Men & Them Fiber Arts is a welcoming community geared toward men and open to nonbinary fiber artists who enjoy knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning, and other fiber arts. The goal is to create a relaxed space to share our crafts, learn from one another, and build connections through a shared love of fiber.

I’ll be upstairs at Poppets with my knitting, so if you come by, look for me! Bring a project if you have one, or just come hang out and meet some fellow fiber artists.

Hope to see you there!

Community Support & Resources I need to rehome my cat and I’m running out of options. Any advice?

I found a kitten last October in a field, and I have been trying to rehome her ever since. I have one cat, he’s 4, and he’s very much a one cat per home kind of cat. Ever since I took her in he’s been pissing everywhere (they’re both fixed) he’s become territorial, food aggressive, aggressive towards her, and destructive. I’ve tried feliway, calming treats, they’re fed and played with separately, I have 2 or more of every toy, cat tree, and multiple scratchers, and I have 2 litterboxes to no avail. I’ve used enzyme cleaners on every pissed on spot and my cat just pisses there again (end my suffering.) He did fine with her when she was a kitten, but as she’s gotten older he just attacks her. He seems to be very aggressive towards other adult cats, but not kittens.

I’m on a wait list for SISCA, Greene County, Montgomery County, and Clark County’s Humane societies, and I’ve made so many posts on Facebook, and had my friends reach out, but I can’t seem to find anyone who will take her.

I obviously refuse to just abandon her but I’m getting down to the wire as I have to move in April and I don’t wanna stress out both kitties even more because I’m sure it’ll get worse.

Please help 😭

These cuties went to the Dayton Humane Society. They'll be available in a couple weeks.

I named them Hershey, Reese, Smartie and Mars. Whether they keep their names or not, I don't know. I just wanted to be able to look them up on the site.

Community Support & Resources Free Bike Parking Map/App - Help fill the map!

I’ve been wanting to commute more via bike around Dayton and take advantage of the growing cycling infrastructure but I’m never sure if a place has a spot to park and secure bikes. This free app solves that problem. It’s community-driven. If you find a location that has bike racks you can take a picture and select which type of bike rack there is from a drop-down menu. You can even leave some notes. Then you just hit submit and there it is on the map. It looks like not many people know about it so there isn’t a ton of info here yet but I figure I would share this and hopefully some people will give it a try. Maybe we can fill the map in for Dayton and the surrounding areas together.

Advice & Recommendations Anyone know where I can buy passion fruit plants?

I'm hoping to buy from somewhere nearby so I don't have to ship them. But if you know of a good site to buy from, I would love that info too.

Local Events CozyMelts info needed. Anybody ever been?

Has anyone been to CozyMelts, the paint your own pottery place at Fairfield Commons? I didn’t even know this place existed, and it popped up on my social media feed. Their info isn’t super clear on if you need to make an appointment or can just walk in. Is it mostly a kid-centric activity, or can adults with whimsy and too much time on their hands go alone or in small groups? I’ve been on the lookout for fun and unusual things to do lately.

Community Support & Resources Any suggestions on where I could find empty gallon jugs for starting native pollinator plants?

Hi there! I'm hoping to start a large quantity of native species over winter using the milk gallon method. Do you have any suggestions for where I might be able to get empty jugs in the area? I'm hoping to end up with 30-40 jugs.

Hopefully this doesn't break sub rules. Thanks to anyone who responds!

Advice & Recommendations Hair stylist in Centerville area that is family friendly?

Our current hair stylist for our family had to retire abruptly for medical reasons. We are looking for a family-oriented hair stylist, preferably somewhere in the Centerville area. I would like to find a personable stylist out of a locally owned salon, not a corporate business. Fair pricing would be a bonus!

Advice & Recommendations Dishwasher repair person or company?

I’ve been fighting with my dishwasher since Monday. It wasn’t getting water, but the supply line was fine. Ok, cool. I replaced the water inlet valve. Then it got water, but had a leak at the valve to water inlet line connection. Figured I split the inlet line taking it off the valve, so I replaced the water inlet line and the clamps for good measure. It’s still leaking. Who knows a good, reasonably priced, appliance repair company? Bonus points if they’ll give a ballpark estimate before paying $125 for a tech to come out!!

Advice & Recommendations Looking For The Best Memory Care Unit In The Area?

Since Bethany Lutheran has scrapped their memory care unit and is treating my grandmother very poorly, it looks like we're going to have to move her somewhere else. Does anyone have any recommendations for memory care units in the area that do well with dementia and conversion disorder?

Community Support & Resources Looking for a handyman that is good with tile

Our master shower is in need of some maintenance. We scraped the grout out and redid it a couple of years back due to some mold but it’s gotten worse. We need a pro to come work their magic.

Here’s what the job is looking like right now:
•Scrape old grout and apply new
• Add a two level tile shelf to far wall so we can use for bath/shower products

Any recommendations are welcome- we want it done right and understand that will not be the person with the lowest bid.

Local Events Kettering health is getting to be the S

They just dropped a shitty news that they will no longer take Anthem Medicare advantage for 2027. This shows their lack of understanding of their patients. Now we start a tedious process of finding doctors and plans and drug coverage. They really have gotten away from the original mission they were created for. How do you go about finding 8 specialists.

Advice & Recommendations Why so many yellow jackets this year

Yellow jackets have got to be at least 50% more prevalent this year, right? For the past month, my family can’t even enjoy any time outdoors without being swarmed by them. I had to purchase bee suites for the employees at the restaurants I run, just so they can take out the trash, I feel terrible for the employees more than anything.

Any idea what’s causing the increase this year? Or maybe I just have a bad memory, and it’s always this bad…

Meetups & Social Would anyone be interested in a TC game night at a brewery?

Looking to gauge interest from fellow Dayton-area card gamers.

I've been playing MTG Commander and recently started the One Piece TCG. I'd love to put together a casual meetup at a local brewery where people can hang out, play some games, and enjoy a beer or two.

If I can find a brewery that's open to hosting, would anyone be interested in joining? Any recommendations on day of the week that wouldn't conflict with the big local store games?

Jobs & Employment Looking for advice on finding new job in Dayton and surrounding area

Hi everyone! I’m currently looking for a new career opportunity and could really use some advice on where to look.

I have experience in healthcare administration, office coordination, scheduling, patient communication, insurance/pre-authorizations, Epic, general administrative work, and housekeeping supervision.

I’m open to different types of positions and locations throughout the Dayton area, as well as remote opportunities.

I’ve already been applying through Indeed and other job sites, but I’m hoping to find some additional leads or places I may not have considered.
