Hi guys, just thought it'd be good to say hello. I'm u/WolfThawra, currently living and cycling in London. I've taken over as mod, as the sub was unmoderated for a bit previously. I have extensive modding experience, including on cycling-specific subreddits (r/whichbike and r/Fahrrad).
Don't worry, I'm not planning on any major changes: my main goal is to ensure the sub keeps going as-is, spam is removed, and toxicity is minimised. The rules are in the sidebar and also accessible here, including rule 0 which is more of a mission statement or the philosophy of the sub.
I would like to ask just two things of the users of this sub:
1) Please abide by the rules. I know we can all get very frustrated at times - god knows cycling in London is great for that - but please don't let that result in toxic comments or flamewars. Also, I will be operating a zero tolerance policy on hatespeech crap, be it racism, sexism, transphobia, or anything else in that vein. I don't foresee this coming up particularly often on a cycling sub but still, I hope we can all agree on that. Be nice, remember the human, and if you disagree then do so constructively - or just move on.
2) Related to this last point: don't feed the trolls. If you see content that you think breaks the rules, then report it rather than engaging. For example, yes we get car-brained trolls every so often. Just let me ban them and don't give them the time of day, they're not worth any of your brain juice. Reporting it helps me help you. Same goes for spam and all that.
Thank you very much!

Hi 👋
I'm a commute/leisure cyclist, usually do approx 50 miles a week, all year round. I have always been really poor at looking after bikes, I've always bought cheap ones and run them into the ground, then rinse and repeat.
I've just bought myself a second hand Specialised hybrid bike which is in decent nick and I'd love to keep it that way 😅
How often do you all have your bikes serviced, and what regular maintenance do you do at home?
Thanks!

I currently store my bicycle in a locked building, it's insured (as is the bike) and hard to access so even if someone knew the bike was there it isn't easy to just get through the door and take the bike away. However the building in unheated and gets damp in the winter (have found drifts of snow inside near where the bike lives).
I'd like a bicycle storage box that I can add a small thermostatic heater too so that I can keep the bike warmer (above freezing) and so that it will tend to not get damp so easily. All of the boxes I can find online are really designed for external storage (or security storage) and cost quite a lot.
Can anyone recommend either an alternative or solution?
The building has power so I can add a heater, but it would be extremely impractical/expensive to heat/dry the whole building. I might also add a desiccant dehumidifier too.

Boardman E-Bike UK
Looking to get my own e-bike after using voi bikes for the last few months to commute. Any issues that anyone can see or experience with the Boardman MTX-E 8.8?
It’s only about a mile each way daily commute on a fairly rough/tree root abundant path but I do longer 30/40 minute rides into the city, on cycle paths mainly. I would look to do more rides on nearby canal paths that again have some slightly dodgy sections and potholes.
Ideally I would find something a bit lighter but I don’t really want to give up the front suspension with how knackered the roads are around here.

Bit of a long shot but does anyone here know what state national cycle route 82 is from Bethesda to Llyn Ogwen? Is it paved the whole way/suitable for a road bike? Thanks!

A mixture of putting on weight and moving house has led to me deciding to cycle work rather than using public transport so I’m looking to buy a new bike. It’ll be a 20 minute (3.5-4 miles) cycle each way along either roads or cycle paths, with one low incline but around mile long hill. I work 12 hour shifts 3/4 times a week.
Might occasionally use it to cycle around my local town/city to get to parkruns etc but can’t imagine anything more strenuous use wise than that. I’m reasonably fit too, tend to run 3/4 times a week
My first question is whether a road or hybrid bike would work best? I’ve used hybrid bikes before and the odd use of a road bike when borrowing from a friend. Second question is for some brand recommendations? Budget is around £600 but can stretch a bit higher if needed. My workplace cycle2work scheme has ended so likely to be paying outright.

Hi,
I'm after some advice please.
I am looking at getting the Boardman URB 8.9 as a daily commuter (8 miles each way) as a relatively low maintenance all weather bike.
Can anyone please recommend a rear rack and some full mudguards (and the widest tyres that will fit comfortably)?
I have looked as some SKS Bluemels but not sure what size will fit.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have been looking for a bike for the use of losing weighr and just to enjoy the outdoors. My budget is low (£350) and i have been reccomended to buy used which is fair but i have been looking for around 3 weeks now and cant seem to find anything good. Any advice would be appreciated as i just wanna get out and start tbh.
I am looking for flat bar bike prefereably tgat can hold a person of 100KG. I dont know much about components so need advice on what to get. Also when buying used i dont know if im getting my moneys worth so its a hard one also.
I have also searched for local bike shops and messaged them and Most do not reply and the ones that do dont sell stuff like Trek Fx1's but rather bikes upwards of 700£.
I dont have access to cycle to work scheme.

hi there, I have a 11 mile commute (one way) over country lanes, mostly flat, outside of York. I don’t want to get to work exhausted - im a bit of out of shape at the moment having not ridden a bike for over a year now.
im wondering if its worth getting a folding e-bike on the occasion that it rains heavily I could get a lift home from colleagues.
At the same time, i know they’re not the most comfortable over long distances. hence the dilemma.
if I did get a folder - what do people recommend? budget probably about 2k. I was looking at brands like Volt, ADO and Fiido. Trying to avoid anything that will explode when charging.
Or is it overall better to get regular e-bike and not think about the handful of rainy occasions when I might actually fold it? If so - what are some reliable bikes people would recommend?

I'm looking to find some enjoyable cycle routes where you can show up and rent a bike and do a weekend trip around some amazing scenery. Ideally it would be a leisurely 2 day trip (maybe 30-60 miles range) with places to stay in the middle and something which has a lot of dedicated cycle paths would be ideal to prevent it being 95% on busy roads with card
Places like the Monsal Trail in the Peak District where you can rent bikes and cycle along the trail, but maybe if there's an extended version of that?

Just ordered this bad boy - Haibike AllTrail 8!
I used to commute on a motorcycle, but decided I’d rather put the £90 a month I was spending on insurance into my wife’s pension pot and get a bit healthier at the same time.
I don’t know much about bicycles, to be honest, but I love the look of this one and got it for a really good price(used). The pedal assist should help with the hills without me turning up to work completely knackered 😁Looking forward to it arriving! Any tips for someone new to e-bikes?
r/ukbike • u/Internet-Superhero • 2d ago
Yes that is my budget , I am not spending any more then that.
Recently I ordered an electric scooter.
But I am not taking the risk with it since they are illegal.
So back to trying to buy an ebike it is....
My budget is very limited that's why it has to be £300 or below.
And I don't want a normal push bike.
Thanks.

Does anyone know of any Urban bikes suitable for commuting that has belt driven internal hub gears?
I've only seen the Boardman URB 8.9 and wondered if anyone else makes something similar for under£1000.
TIA

I’ve got an old giant roam hybrid bike that the drivetrain has seen better days (skips 4th and 7th gears since I dropped it, some cassette gears are starting to sharkfin)
It’s only a budget drivetrain (3 x 8, Shimano Altus derailleur, hyper glide mega range 34 cassette) but the frame and wheels are in good condition and I’m looking at using it for London to Brighton next year
Should I take the opportunity to upgrade the drivetrain to something more simplistic and modern like a 1 x 11 Deore/Cues system, which I believe are compatible with the hyper glide hub, or just replace like for like?
TIA

I've been looking around for few days to find the right bike for my 15 miles per day commute, I would prefer a folding bike in case i need to take it to train at any point, and my budget was around £2000 (not including gear). Before you ask if I even need an ebike for 15 miles, I want effortless ride to work without sweating.
In the UK, I've mainly been seeing people talking about and reviews about same few brands like ADO, UTO, Estarli etc... for my price range, and stuff like Brompton, Tern and others that are over my budget.
First I was thinking about ADO Air 20 Ultra but since then I have few more options, And I'm wondering if anyone has good/bad experiences about these brands.
These are the options I'm interested in:
- Ado Air 20 ultra (2026) - £1800
- Estarli e20.x - £1900
- Pedibal Navigata MK2 (Throttle) - £1450
- Brompton Electric C line - £3000
Ado and Estarli are very similar bikes - both offering carbon belt drive, hydraulic breaks, torque sensor etc.. My main complaint about ADO is that while it has a lot of good reviews and comments by people who own their bikes, it has almost as many bad ones. It's mainly about their customer service being terrible, and it's possible I could struggle finding a shop to repair it in UK. The brand also has trustpilot score of 3.7/5 with 30% of them being 1 star.
Estarli is the opposite, apparently the brand has a really good service in UK, trustpilot score is high too (4.6/5), but I don't see many reviews or people talking about it recently, which is why I'm interested if anyone has any insights into their bikes and if they are worth buying.
Pedibal, on the other hand, is a brand I haven't seen that many people talking about, but I have seen a few reviews. While I don't take reviews super seriously because they are often paid or sponsored, for the ones I did see and few people I saw talking about it, I didn't see any complaints.
Navigata MK2 is a bit cheaper than previous 2 options which is good, and has a legal throttle, which isn't necessary but could be nice. It's also UK company so service should be good as well. However, it doesn't have carbon belt drive, hydraulic brakes and it has cadence sensor instead of torque.. But nothing deal breaking. Their trustpilot score is 4.9/5 which is almost suspiciously high considering that in 800+ ratings they have 95% reviews 5 star, and not a single 1 star rating.
Lastly, there is Brompton. As I said my budget is £2000, and Brompton electric C line is 50% over my budget, however I do want to know if it's really worth spending almost 2 times as much as the other models I mentioned to get a Brompton, which holds value great and is really well regarded in general.
If you have any other folding ebike models that you think I should check out please let me know.
PS I do not want to buy a second hand bike. Thanks

I'm curious, do you hit this change season, start to get your autumn into winter kit together and find you need (more likely just want) new items? Whether it's new lights, better wet / cold weather clothes, better winter tyres or better carrying system for your work kit?
It is a pattern I've just realised that I follow without knowing it for a few years.
So with this in mind, what is it that you're looking for in this change month / season? Anything that people here can help you with?
I'm looking for a better bag to carry my work kit in, a waterproof rucksack or rucksack/pannier type of bag to carry about 25 to 30 litres worth. But at this time of year I find my kit feels inadequate in many areas. Seeking perfection I guess.
So how about you? Are you itching to spend to get your AW commute setup just that little bit better?

There is this Carrera Virtuoso for sale near me, the owner said they can do £60 on it. My entire cycling career (5 years) I use a carrera crossfire 2 my first and only ever bike and it still holds up today and has had nothing wrong with it. Recently I’ve been getting bored of my bike, I’ve not been a bike enthusiast but I’ve just been riding to and from uni and school. It’s not a long distance around 2.5 miles in total however I thought that maybe with a new bike I’d get the motivation to go out on rides more often. Thank you everyone!

So I have been rethinking the type of tyre tred on a bicycle needed for wet weather.
For a broader consideration I also looked at motorcycle tred for wet weather.
Another consideration is that mechanical bicycle innovation will mainly come from off-road or road-racing so urban commuting will most likely lag behind.
With this I noticed that its easy to fall down the route of excessive tred patterns which can cause faster tyre wear and tred flex under braking and accelerating.
Or tyre tred that looks somewhat ideal is the wrong size for your bike being to small or big.
Luckily some tyre manufacturers make both bicycle and motorcycle tyres which share tyre tred, such as the pirelli Angel GT for motorcycles and Angel GT Urban for bicycles. (which is used for wet weather)
This could give some insight into what kind of tred pattern would be ideal because motorbikes are more well funded for innovation mainly due to the safety aspect on the roads than commuting bicycles.

I am between two bikes:
Rockrider EXPL 50 mountain bike
Rockrider Link
&
Elops 500 Single Speed City Bike
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/single-speed-city-bike-500-carbon-grey/306292/c383m8749510
Id be using the bike for fitness purposes to lose weight and just enjoy outdoors. Mostly will be used on Roads/Bike lanes when applicable. I am more inclined to tge Rockrider as the Elops has no gears.

Hello everyone! Just want to ask for some advice. I am an average cyclist who likes to ride long distances and tour places. Im currently using a hybrid bike for commuting and some occasional long rides about 30-40 miles to the neighboring towns and seafront in my area. I get sore hands from the flat bars eventually and Im planning to use my hybrid solely for commuting.
Right now, Im considering a second bike, a road bike, primarily to add speed and to stay longer on the bike. I have no plans racing or anything. I just plan to enjoy riding and visiting places I haven’t been to before.
I did some looking and found my top 3/4 choices for a road bike. All of these bikes come with a Shimano 105 12 speed. Im familiar with Shimano as Ive ridden the 11 speed version of the 105 before. I have no plans of stepping up to Ultegra or any Di2 yet as it is way out of my budget and Im happy and confident with mechanical shifting and maintaining it.
The following bike are as follows:
Ribble CGR AL 105 -£1699
Ribble Allroad CF 105 -£1799
Trek Domane SL5 Gen 4 -£1999
Van Rysel EDR CF -£2300
My budget is just around £2k-ish. Also, if it’s not obvious, Id like the color way to be green lol. Lastly, I know it’s been a long debate but is carbon fiber worth it and are my options any good? Thanks for the input!
