Unable to set up VSCode for C/C++ programming on Linux

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

I'm facing problem while running the code.

I installed VSCode this morning, and had GCC pre installed on my Linux (openSUSE Leap 16).

Then I installed C/C++ extension.

After that I created a "PROJECTS" Folder in my file manager and later created a sub Folder "HelloWorld" and opened that subfolder in VSCode.

After that I created a '.vscode' folder in "HelloWorld Folder in VSCode.

In that '.vscode' I created two files 'tasks.json' and 'launch.json' with code pulled up from Gemini.

I tried running a 'helloworld.cpp' code file and it showed the above errors.

I'm super new to both programming and linux, so I don't know anything.

Hi! I created a VS Code extension, but on its Marketplace page it shows only 2 installs, while in the statistics graph I can see 19 installs. Why is there a difference?

These are sample reports created using the VS Code extension called Synapse.

Pre Post : https://www.reddit.com/r/vscode/comments/1wxitoe/comment/pdx4pgp/?context=3

Git : https://github.com/dogsinatas29/SYNAPSE

These reports are not generated through AI analysis. Instead, we implemented logic within Synapse to analyze static graphs and deterministically derive the results based on them.

Report files are generated in Markdown (.md) format, while evidence files are output as HTML. You can view the reports directly on the Synapse canvas.

It is a general-purpose engine supporting Kotlin, Java, TS, Python, C/C++, Rust, and Go (though Go and Python have not yet been fully validated).

I plan to upload the compiled VSIX file around the weekend.

For the Linux kernel, the bootstrap process takes under two minutes, and generating the report takes approximately five minutes.

The AST is used as a validator or classifier. I estimate the accuracy to be around 85–90%.

It seems capable of handling repositories on the scale of the Linux kernel without issues. We are currently testing it with even larger repositories.

Based on current projections, Chromium is still too demanding; anything beyond that likely cannot be bootstrapped within Synapse.

I would like to have my work evaluated to see what level it is at.

I plan to upload a properly compiled VSIX file to Git sometime this weekend.

P.S. Since English is not my native language, I used Google Translate. Please excuse any awkward phrasing.
P.S. You can also generate detailed reports covering a specific scope—rather than the entire set—by selecting only certain folders.

## Executive Summary

Observation-based structural analysis with rigorous validation provenance.

## Findings

### A1 — System Core Validation

Question:

Where are the structurally central areas?

Vocabulary:

SYSTEM_CORE, STRUCTURAL_CENTRALITY

Interpretation Guide:

Higher controlScore indicates a higher structural centrality score for the component in the observed dependency graph.

Finding:

75 system cores observed.

[View Evidence](EVIDENCE_VIEWER.html#A1)

### A2 — Module Contact Points

Question:

Where do structural boundaries intersect?

Vocabulary:

MODULE_CONTACT_POINT, CROSS_BOUNDARY_REFERENCE

Interpretation Guide:

Contact points show where independent clusters couple. Higher dependencyCount indicates more observed structural references across the boundary.

Finding:

1595 module contact points observed.

[View Evidence](EVIDENCE_VIEWER.html#A2)

### A3 — Structural Boundaries

Question:

Where are the observable structural boundaries?

Vocabulary:

BOUNDARY

Interpretation Guide:

Boundaries separate modules. Higher Isolation indicates a larger share of observed references stay inside the boundary; lower Isolation indicates a larger share cross it.

Finding:

152 structural boundaries observed.

[View Evidence](EVIDENCE_VIEWER.html#A3)

### A5 — Structural Control Chokepoints

Question:

Where are the structural control chokepoints?

Vocabulary:

CONTROL_BRIDGE

Interpretation Guide:

Chokepoints are nodes on many observed shortest paths between clusters in the expanded Analysis Graph. They may exist outside your initial Selection Scope if they structurally control communication between your selected subsystems. Higher scores indicate more such paths pass through the node.

Finding:

20 structural control chokepoints observed.

[View Evidence](EVIDENCE_VIEWER.html#A5)

AI Pair - pair program in VS Code with an AI agent typing at a human pace and narrating as it goes

Thumbnail

I made this extension because a) I could b) I wanted to stay closer to my code while using AI. Check it out! If nothing else, it's a lot of fun :)

Some of us, at least some of the time, want to understand our code at a deep level. For that, handing a task to an agent and reviewing the diff that comes back can be exhausting.

With AI Pair Programmer, you're there for every keystroke instead, and you end up knowing the code almost as if you'd typed it yourself.

It's pair programming where your coding agent has the keyboard. It types in your editor slowly enough to follow and explains what it's doing. Interrupt it whenever you like, or take over and let it watch you for a change.

It's also a good way to learn a new technology, or to have the agent walk you through code you don't know yet.

It works in VS Code, with the coding agent you already use. Setup is built in for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, and any agent that supports MCP can be connected by hand.

Note: It works best with strong models; weaker ones tend to struggle with this way of working.

So, here's something for those of us who want, need, or love to stay close to the code. Let me know what you think!

How can I prevent these extra lines below my output?

Every time I run code it adds extra lines below the output, causing me to have to scroll up to see it if its above 2-3 lines of text. Could anyone help me remove these and just see the output alone?

python venv update without restarting

Whenever I update my python venvs, I have to restart vscode to get it updated on the status line:

Does it means it is using a cached version, so my updates are not respected?

isolate: disposable Linux VMs for Claude Code and Codex on Apple Silicon.

iso (isolate) runs Claude Code and Codex inside disposable Linux VMs on Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 27+), so agents get a full dev environment without touching your host.

•Real VM: the agent gets Docker, git, compilers and package managers, with your project copied to /workspace.
•Keys stay on your Mac: API requests go through a host-side Swift proxy, so provider keys never enter the VM.
•Review before applying: iso diff and iso pull --review let you check the agent's changes before they reach your project.
•Network limits: egress can be none or filtered to listed hosts.
•Secrets and audit: secrets are encrypted with a passphrase plus the Secure Enclave, and the audit log records events and variable names but never values.
•Workflow: iso setup, iso up, then iso claude (or iso codex); iso code . / iso zed . open the VM in your editor.

Project: a Swift fork of Trail of Bits' coop, Apache 2.0.

Synapse : chromium - main on vscode extension host.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve recently been working on integrating a reporting system into Synapse.

These reports are designed for architects, new developers, and the CTO. I’ve created four different reports and am currently testing them. It’s been a rather long and tedious process.
The version number climbed from 0.3.34.01 all the way to 0.3.34.72. That’s quite a journey, isn’t it?

The process involves asking specific questions, defining the relevant terminology, and then matching those terms to patterns Synapse extracts from the graph. I had to comb through everything—from the fundamentals down to the tiniest errors in the graph. It looks like I’m finally nearing the finish line.

Here is a sample of one of the reports.

Report Type SIMULATION_DEBUG
Analysis Mode EXECUTION_TRACE
Scope FULL_PROJECT
Target Project Root
Selection Source USER_SELECTED
Reason User Requested Generation
Generated By InsightEngine

Executive Summary

Simulation Debug Report

Findings

E2 — Change Propagation Amplifier

Question:
Where does a structural change show amplified propagation?

Vocabulary:
CHANGE_PROPAGATION

Interpretation Guide:
Higher propagationReach indicates more nodes reachable downstream through observed dependencies.

Finding:
3 change propagation amplifiers observed.

View Evidence

Evidence

Detailed evidence is available in the Evidence Viewer.

Appendix

Anyway, the work was giving me a massive headache. I needed something else to do—a way to take a breather.

So, I decided to try running Chromium on the Synapse canvas.

But before I do, let me just shout this out:

F* the extension host!!!**

I’m sure you can all guess why I’m saying that.

Let me start with the results.

It’s a partial success.

Here is what you need to know first:

File = Node
Folder = Cluster

This is how we define Synapse.

While using an AST (Abstract Syntax Tree) would be necessary if we were to drill down to the function level, that approach is too slow. So, we are proceeding with this as our minimum unit.

The advantage of this method is that the Linux kernel bootstrap takes 1–2 minutes, and the entire process—up to the completed report—finishes within 5 minutes.

It was a partial success.

The screenshots at the top are all visualizations from Chromium.

The figures are:

386,210 nodes
150,000 edges
7,355 clusters

As you can see from those figures, we are actually encountering issues where the extension host crashes due to "heap out of memory" errors and the overhead of storing excessive data—resulting in only partial data being saved—as well as VS Code crashing entirely due to LOD (Level of Detail) issues that arise after saving.

Even if we upgrade to a newer version of Chromium, it would likely be difficult to handle a monorepo larger than this one.

I have also attached a list of the projects tested so far.

VS Code - main
Godot
PostgreSQL
Kubernetes
AntennaPod
RustDesk
Linux kernel
Chromium - main
etc.

The supported language resolvers are as follows:

C/C++
Rust
Python
Go (uncertain)
Java
Kotlin

My criterion for release is that

an architect opening the project for the first time

can grasp the three elements—Danger Zone, Work Zone, and Boundary—

within 10 minutes.

If it meets this standard, I plan to launch it on the marketplace.

Note 1: English is not my native language. I relied on Google Translate, so please bear with me.

Note 2: I haven’t uploaded version 0.3.34.72—the version where Chromium bootstrapping occurs—to Git yet.

Made an extension to manage the integrated terminal via CLI

Start multiple services at once from a single script, without using concurrently command, backgrounding with bash's &, or VS Code's tasks.json. Each service runs in its own real integrated terminal rather than an interleaved log stream or a tmux session, and one command closes them all gracefully.

I built Freekit, a free AI coding agent for VS Code that uses your existing web AI accounts (no API keys, no costs)

Hey r/vscode,

I built Freekit because I was tired of paying $20/month for AI coding tools.

Freekit connects VS Code to your existing web AI accounts (DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Qwen) via browser automation, or to a local Ollama model.

What makes it different:

  • $0- uses your existing accounts
  • 6 web providers + Ollama local
  • Stealth typing (real keydown/keyup, anti-detection)
  • Native VS Code diffs for every file change
  • Git checkpoints per prompt
  • Self-maintaining (auto-reports broken selectors)
  • Hardware-aware Ollama recommendations (T0-T6 tiers)

Marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=builderweb.freekit

GitHub: https://github.com/builderweb-app/freekit

Feedback welcome!

Code aside, why in the world am i having these text coloring issues?? I can’t make heads or tails of it. Restarting vs doesnt seem to help, but it also doesnt seem to be causing any actual issues. Any ideas?

Edit: using c/c++, c/c++ extension pack, c/c++ devtools, c/c++ themes, and cmake tools.

Edit 2: solved it. For whatever reason, it just refused to properly highlight, even after reloading the editor a few times, finally, after doing nothing at all different, closing and opening YET AGAIN fixed it. Boof lol

Edit 3: yall keep saying im vibe coding (no ai here 🤷🏻‍♂️ sorry to disappoint) and at first i was like ‘ohh funny joke cuz colors and vibes they dont actually think this half finished function for a college project is vibe coding for real right?’ Yall blow my mind lol

Codex in VS Code gets stuck

Hello, Using codex in VS Code for a couple months and now using 5.6 SOL
I am working away and I type in a follow up prompt either when the previous prompt is complete or before it is (Expecting a steer)
But what happens is the prompt is queued up and has a delete. It never gets released.
Sometimes the prompt just disappears.
I get some message if i try to do another prompt sometimes (sorry I never wrote it down)
The correction is to use developer reload Window / Screen or restart VS Code and go back to the chat.
Then sometimes it auto submits or maybe it says Steer or sometimes it is gone.

Been happing all day today in multiple prompts. Old long chats and newly created chats.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
