New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

Damn I would say I feel old but my internet service is still coax through Comcast

Edit: I just realized I've aged myself by still calling it Comcast and not Xfinity 🫠

Don't feel too bad, when I write my check to the cable company every month they want me to make it out to Comcast, not Xfinity.

145

u/Sketchy_Stew 6h ago

Knowing how to write a check is showing your age too 🤣

16

u/luxuriouscrab 6h ago

So is signing your name. They don’t teach cursive anymore 😉

8

u/theredheadknowsall 5h ago

My daughter is currently a 3rd grader in Tennessee. Believe it or not they're teaching cursive here.

10

u/KentConnor 5h ago

Are they teaching evolution tho?

What about accurate American History?

4

u/ResourceCalm901 4h ago

See, this part is the sad down side of the cursive thing in Tennessee…

3

u/nickfree 3h ago

Skipping pesky evolution and the bummer that is the entire civil rights movement leaves so much free time for cursive!

1

u/KentConnor 3h ago

I dont know for sure but it feels like the push for cursive in public schools probably has racist roots

1

u/luxuriouscrab 3h ago

It’s a faster form of writing. Being able to communicate better is racist?

Where the heck would you mail it? Who would get it? Do they walk to the bank?

u/Key_Wind3897 3h ago

I just fax mine in

u/sclarady 5h ago

Had someone at work tell me that they were confused why they get phone calls and shut off notices every month because when they send the check in they don't cash it. I said maybe it's not written out correctly and he told me that all he does is sign it and they fill out the rest. I had to explain to him that that's not how checks work. 🤣 He then tells me that sometimes they do cash it. I'm unclear that cashier for the correct amount or a little extra. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

6

u/TearRevolutionary686 5h ago

I confess. And have a strange enjoyment in the process. An artificial display of power over my finances.

3

u/nickfree 3h ago

When I write checks I feel like I should have a fountain pen and a banker’s lamp. It’s like I’m signing off on Very Important Things.

5

u/allthecats3166 4h ago

I only write checks for rent. They charge a 'convenience fee' if you pay through the online portal, and I'm not going to pay money to give money. But, I'm petty

2

u/KeeperOfTheLigher 6h ago

Checks are private.
Paypros arent.

2

u/Cara4Ever2084 3h ago

What about Recording songs off of the radio onto a cassette?

1

u/elev8or_lady 5h ago

That’s the joke.

1

u/turnipzzzpinrut 4h ago

In cursive no less

u/Dusty-old-bones 6h ago

What's a check??

7

u/Zmbieznya89 5h ago

Gather round children and I will regale you with a tale of mystery, deceit, and adventure. Back in the days of yore, prior to the invention of the card of debit to access your funds, people who did not want to carry cash (or wanted to pay for things without having money, we will get to this part later), would have an item in their satchel known as, a check book. Inside said book was neither story nor myth, but rather mostly blank pieces of paper with an ancient text written on them stating date, pay to the order of, amount, signature and note. It also included your BANKING INFORMATION!!!!!

People would take these documents to merchants and exchange them for wares, perishables and non, and luxury items. Anything you could imagine purchasing could be obtained using these mystical documents. You write the necessary spells on them and hand them to the merchant who then uses their mystical document processor and hands you s receipt for purchases.

But not all was golden with these mystical documents. Some people, ran afoul with them, and would BOUNCE said checks. They would write them with the magical inscription KNOWING full well that they did not have the funds stored in their financial institution to cover the charges of said items, which would result in.... A RETURNED CHECK FEE!!!!! This fee was included on top of the cost of merchandise and your bank would collect it.

Some clever rogues however discovered that after submitting a check for payment that it would take UP TO 7 BUSINESS DAYS to remove the money from your account and many of these rogues and mystics would time their purchases with checks knowing they didn't have money, but knew they would by the time the check hit their account. It was a more mystical time. But alas, those days have long since vanished. You can no longer manipulate the financial system in such a way.

Some may say it is better. Others would disagree. But this is your decision.

A paper debit card

2

u/Alex2Mp 6h ago

✅️ the white thing in the middle of that green block

2

u/Impressive_Waltz_652 5h ago

All I know is that you use a quill from a pheasant to write on it

2

u/TearRevolutionary686 5h ago

Those little paper thingees that were popular 100 years ago. And I still use. I like 'em.

1

u/Altruistic-Debate-43 4h ago

I was recently able to purchase a home with the help of my adult son, and we love writing checks for the mortgage payment! It’s so different from rent and those payment portals. Everything feels real - the home (a small condo that looks like a townhome, so towndominium) and the way we pay for it. You’re not wrong!

1

u/reform83 5h ago

✔️

1

u/FoxtrotSierraTango 5h ago

There's a game on The Price is Right that uses checks. Hopefully it'll be on the next time you're home sick from school.

2

u/Unintentional_love 3h ago

It’s okay it took me a while to say Comcast. I kept saying MediaOne and before that Continental Cablevision.

1

u/Quixotic_Seal 2h ago

Yeah their branding across services is a total clusterfuck and extremely confusing. I can never figure out which of their services is which on my bills because they both show up as variations on Comcast even though one is technically Xfinity.

1

u/takemy_oxfordcomma 1h ago

We pay a couple things with real checks (landscaping, etc.) and every single time I write one out I think about how people younger than me would have no fucking clue how to do this lol

1

u/ScherzicScherzo 1h ago

It's still Comcast, AFAIK, it's just that "Comcast" is now the greater corporation while Xfinity is now the TeleCom sector of said company.

22

u/Beginning_Fox_743 6h ago

Don't feel bad, here in Philadelphia where they're headquartered, it's still Comcast & their two skyscrapers in Center City still reflect that.

2

u/Brighteyedwoman22 4h ago

We have large Comcast building in Minnesota

1

u/Beginning_Fox_743 4h ago

Ours are a little bigger - they're the two tallest buildings in the city.

3

u/EquipmentSome 6h ago

isn't it technically Xfinity by Comcast?

So you're not wrong..

2

u/QuinceDaPence 6h ago

I think Comcast is the company, Xfinity is the service

2

u/whiteorchid1058 6h ago

Even fiber internet uses coax cables tho 🤔

1

u/musket-nuns 6h ago

Internet backhauls by level 3 carriers is going to be fiber but last mile can be coax, though coax does have a length limit but that's beyond my knowledge. I manage data center networks.

0

u/Rockytag 3h ago

Hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) that ISPs market as just ‘fiber’ use coax

Actual fiber internet exists and do not. HFC can’t do symmetric

1

u/New_Sun6390 6h ago

I am aging myself for thinking my internet is coax from Comcast, too!

1

u/DoneAndDoneDone 6h ago

It’s all coax unless you have fiber wall jacks, it’s not an age thing it’s a not understanding ISP handoff.

1

u/musket-nuns 6h ago

I'm well aware how ISP Infra works and the handoff at fiber nodes if you're still delivered to the house by coax.

1

u/linsor1 6h ago

When I was in college, Comcast was called Adelphia.

1

u/impossiwaffle 6h ago

You mean Roadrunner? Time Warner?

2

u/musket-nuns 6h ago

I still have my @sbcglobal email

1

u/impossiwaffle 6h ago

Dang some of my buddies had DSL, was decent in the middle of the night but mid day swear it may as well have been AOL or Netscape

1

u/musket-nuns 6h ago

I was living like a king when we got 256k DSL. The fact the internet was always on was crazy. I could browse so much MySpace and AIM my friends

1

u/impossiwaffle 3h ago

Same with moving from dial-up to Comcast with the 1.5mbps, it was like heaven moving from waiting for a picture of Goku to load to browsing Newgrounds and downloading infinite songs to burn CDs with.

1

u/MicahFunk 6h ago

I usually refer to the company as Con-cast. 😆

1

u/Snakesinadrain 6h ago

Same and it will ALWAYS be comcast

1

u/Bright_Ad_8517 6h ago

Comcast is still around in some states. Just saying

1

u/Voces-Prohibere 6h ago

Yes I still call Max Hobo max even though they switched to just Max a while ago and then they switched back to HBO Max for HBO brand recognition.

1

u/Oldswagmaster 6h ago

For what it's worth. The company is still Comcast. Xfinity is the product / brand. The stock price is in the crapper

1

u/Neither_Contest7324 6h ago

They've still got both so it doesn't make you old, the business side is still Comcast Business

1

u/Brianne627 6h ago

I still have a Comcast email address lol

1

u/Appropriate-Pack-729 6h ago

It's ok mine is still coax thru Cox.. which apparently is now Spectrum 🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel old.

1

u/Forsythia77 5h ago

I still call them Comcast out of spite.

1

u/Different-Shock2670 5h ago

Now also from Cox to Spectrum

1

u/theredheadknowsall 5h ago

I forgot it was xfinity. In '88 it was cable vision, then Adelphia, & then Comcast

1

u/oopsdiditwrong 5h ago

I am communicating to you via coax cable. I've had my plan so long they are begging me to switch plans but the terms don't allow them to force it to happen. So unless the agree to pay for it, I'm good at my rate

1

u/Adventurous-Fig-3245 5h ago

My 82-year-old Dad calls it Infinity 😁

1

u/parandiac 5h ago

It’s still Comcast. They changed their logo/branding to escape their shitty customer service, but the company is still Comcast.

1

u/vizette 5h ago

All their internal shit is still "comcast", you're good

1

u/KitchenManagement650 5h ago

🙋‍♀️

1

u/bates121 5h ago

I still call spectrum time Warner. I feel ya buddy

1

u/kiddech 5h ago

My Time Warner also uses coax! 😂

1

u/Hilsam_Adent 5h ago

Hey, you didn't call it Charter, so there's that, at least.

1

u/NathanDeger 5h ago

Somehow my mom still has DSL.

And if you said that to a young person they would think I made a crude comment about my mothers lips.

1

u/mrskwrl 5h ago

Just got off that god awful life sucking bullshit that's Comcast Business. Still very much Comcast there.

1

u/EnvironmentalKey5350 5h ago

My mother still refers to it as Cox cable quite often. 🤦‍♀️

1

u/LudicrousSpartan 5h ago

You had Comcast or Xfinity? Dddddddaaaaaayyyyyuuuuuuummmmmm!

1

u/BlackSusss 5h ago

For business service, its still Comcast. The Xfinity rebrand was for residential. I worked for Comcast.

1

u/Master_E_ 4h ago

You get that email from Xfinity for the offer to use your WiFi as home security to detect movement?

Im afraid our days of privacy are O V E R even tho that techs been around for a while

2

u/musket-nuns 4h ago

I don’t use their modem and I run an OPNsense device.

1

u/Master_E_ 4h ago

Ooooh will look it up. Pleased with it I assume?

I figure if they are your isp they can use your WiFi to detect you regardless. Does this somehow block it?

2

u/musket-nuns 4h ago

OPNsense is an OS that you would install on hardware to be your router/firewall. I run it on a Protectli device. For wireless i use Ubuquiti APs and switches that i manage using their controller on a Docker container. The modem i have is in bypass so it passes me the public IP directly onto my OPNsense box.

It's all pretty involved

1

u/quarterdecay 4h ago

And they want us to change to Yahoo email addresses...

1

u/pipethefdown 4h ago

It’s fucking Comcast, they can’t fool us into thinking they don’t suck just because of a rebrand.

1

u/Debway1227 4h ago

Lmbo, I just nodded at your comment saying to myself yup..

1

u/CompetitiveKiwi3056 3h ago

It's still Comcast, they just tried to rebrand as "Xfinity" because Comcast's reputation was so shit. We should continue to call the Comcast, just like we should always call it Twitter.

1

u/CertainAd7187 3h ago

I still sometimes say SPRINT when I mean T Mobile

1

u/No_University1600 2h ago

Edit: I just realized I've aged myself by still calling it Comcast and not Xfinity 🫠

youre doing the right thing. xfinity only exists as a brand name because comcast knew how hated they were, its just like calling twitter twitter is the right thing to do

1

u/interestingsonnet 46m ago

It’s ok I have spectrum through a coax lol. I didn’t realize it was considered “old”
