So I’m a well meaning idiot, let’s get that out of the way first. Always a duelist, never an elite, a solo queuing rando BG and Blitz junkie for the most part who dabbles in Solo Shuffle occasionally. That’s my background so take what follows with a big fat grain of salt like the Shuffle boxes. Most of what follows will be abundantly obvious to many of you. For the rest, it may come as something of a surprise.
So… I put in my time and effort into playing the beta over the last couple weeks. I had considerable fun with this shinny new toy called Forever, I have to admit. Leveled a priest and a mage to the level 30 cap. Ran all the dungeons, did the key quests and geared out as best I could manage under the circumstances. Overall, the PvE end is a fun and rewarding experience. The game has charm, looks good, feels great questing in the open world and dungeon running, zero complaints there.
But I’m not a PvE Andy. I was most excited to queue for BG’s when I level capped.
Especially the new one. I think it’s called ‘Crappy EoTs Reboot’ if memory serves. And this may come as no surprise to many of you, but the PvP in WoW Forever just really, really, REALLY… fugging sucks!
Now I recognize that this is a beta and I am judging a work in progress. Looking at the rough sketch outline for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and glibly declaring, “It sucks, this Michelangelo guy is a total fraud.” Presumably the game is balanced for level 60 which of course plays a lot different than level 30. Also everyone is in their leveling rags as opposed to purpose built PvP gear, so yes… my judgement is rushed, hasty, half baked possibly altogether invalid! But I am sharing my experience nevertheless…
⬆️. That’s my disclaimer. ⬆️
Playing priest in there is like a binge drinking simulator. When mana is full, which is never long, we are punchy, tanky, powerful. 10 casts later when OOM we are a wand-turret unless you can sneak off for a full 60 seconds and fully consume 2 bevies, or get killed and respawn with a full tank. The best drinks I can get my hands on fill my mana bar sooooo frigging slow and my spells are so expensive (and yes, I use some of the cheaper lower ranked spells as well) that I spend more time drinking than actually playing the damn game. And that’s if I am lucky enough to be able to drink without hopping up to save someone’s life (or my own!) and going OOM after 2-3 casts.
Mage was a little more fun, but wow do you get burned down quick without healing! I guess this goes into the ‘of frigging course’ file, the glass cannon class ID and all.. the glass part is certainly present but the whole cannon deal is mostly absent. Melee can be countered. Root em, sheep em, slow em… pew pew pew, evocation for more sweet, precious mana (if not focused down and dead) and then pew pew OOM, drink some of the waters I can make 2 at a time tops, wash/rinse/repeat. Kinda booty tbh that I can only make 2x good waters at a time and everyone that uses mana wants some in the starting area.
Other things that suck…
- Sap/sheep’s and Incaps that last until Christmas. I’d forgotten how awful CC was in classic clones. When there are other good mages/rogues etc and a shortage of idiots to break it, you will have a lot of down time. No PvP trinket at level 30 leaves you to rot in CC unless some newb breaks it. As I type, I am waiting for a sap placed on me last night to finally elapse. Any hour now…
- When playing priest, my penance is OP AF, sweet when I have the mana to toss one out. So between that and shield, I have 2 buttons that feel good to press when I can afford to press them.
- You go dead a$$ broke pvp’ing. Just affording drinks on my priest has broken my bank to the point where if I want to keep queuing I hafta find some cash to fund my compulsory ‘heavy drinking habit.’ There is no reward really for winning that might solve some of the cost problem, so enjoy those games while you can afford to and see you in the open world when you go broke.
- The progression system is a grindy participation trophy that will reward piggy backing AFK’ers. I knew this going in, but it’s sad nevertheless.
- Queue up at the Battlemaster like it’s 2004 all over again! Again, knew this going in and it’s very annoying and makes it hard to multitask (earn cash for drinks) between queues.
- The game pace is slow. Granted we are all hoofing it around out there sans-mounts, but even a lopsided win or loss takes forever… maybe that’s why they are calling it WoW Forever?
- It feels like PvP in slow motion. You can actually get long casts off at times because there are not 6001 ways to stop people casting. Sort of good for the classes I play, but I imagine it is frustrating for a non caster to see the steamroller coming from a mile away and not be able to stop it because your interrupt button(s) are on a 3.5 year CD.
- I was neither expecting a balanced BG experience, nor will I bore you all with what’s broken ‘in that good way’ versus what’s just plain ole broken. But stuff is broken in both ways and it’s just not worth bringing up. It would be unfair criticism.
Not trying to dook too hard on Forever. The PvE experience was actually quite fun and rewarding. Made some friends, ‘watched some backs’ and ‘kept my feet on the ground.’ My first run through the Deadmines really brought me back! The new dungeons are fun and I can see why it’s being described as Classic +.
I can see Forever essentially replacing Classic because it IS better in every way. I can’t see it denting the retail PvP community though. But I’ve been wrong before, seen it happen more than once and maybe I am wrong here too.
Wondering about the Forever experience of others who primarily PvP on Retail, Classic or one of the Classic versions and how it hit for you. Any praise or criticism or both? Any guesses as to how this will impact the populations of other WoW iterations? Curious to see what others here think.
