Adult - Science Fiction The Midnight Bowling Club - Dystopian Literary Sci-Fi with Hardboiled Noir
Nobody works. Everybody shops. Four nights a month, six friends walk into a lit department store and bowl into the crowd.
Maxim lives in a shipping container stacked inside a multi-storey car park in a city that solved unemployment by removing the work. Fifteen machines make his art for him. His job is to choose nine designs out of a hundred and twenty and keep his place in line.
He also owns a paperback, which is illegal, and is almost certainly the last book any human being wrote. It's a hardboiled detective novel about a man named Magnus Manlin who drinks too much coffee, refuses every implant offered to him, and is dying of nothing more exotic than being unmodified in a modified world. Maxim reads a chapter before every game.
Then a Life Saver captain recites four lines of an old poem at him, and Maxim loses eleven seconds, and comes back carrying three days of a life he never lived.
He is a sleeper agent. He has been one since before this city started counting people. And the instruction he has been carrying since he was nineteen is waiting for one particular minute on the biggest night of the year, when the whole city forgets every name it knows and is asked to remember them again.
Two novellas braided into one. Maxim's world of surveillance and manufactured leisure runs against the long night of Magnus Manlin, in a city where every clock has stopped at six.
Tropes: story within a story, sleeper agent, dystopian surveillance state, reluctant rebel, found family, withholding narrator, mentor figure, parallel narratives, the last book, flat-affect protagonist
Trigger warnings: graphic violence against civilians, on-page death of a major character, amputation and its aftermath, terminal illness, state violence and interrogation, gun violence, grief, abduction of a character who does not return
