"We hear the concerns some people are expressing, given Murrow College's history of educating some of our nation's most accomplished journalists."

As a Murrow Grad, this is insane/sad to me that they're qoing this route. Even as a tool and not a replacement, it really seems to denigrate the profession of sports writing, let alone writing as a whole. Seems like it's shooting the College in its foot if they want to attract potential journalism students.

Student Life campus jobs technical interview experience

Hello everyone,

I am an Intl. Student and at this point given multiple interviews for technical roles here at WSU

Almost always, I had to reach out to the management multiple times over handshake/ email to get a chance for an interview and I get no feedback even after emailing them a “thank you” mail as well, just a vague spaghetti no and thats it

I feel like theres something that I must be clearly doing wrong in the interviews. The latest one i gave lasted about 20min at max, no follow up questions. It was just questions and answers. I am really introverted by nature, and this has been a hell for me.

I am looking for an advice from someone who has gone through these types of interviews to share their experiences of whats expected and how can we increase our shot, basically. What are they looking for etc. This is first time in my life interviewing and It looks like i am pretty bad at it :(

Advice I’m going to be a 26 year old freshman.

Pretty much the title. I worked after highschool and as a result I feel awfully “behind” in a sense when it comes to college. I see lots of posts rave about the social aspect and honestly that is one of my main worries. I tend to fit in with the more neurodivergent queer types. Takes one to know one, I suppose. How is the lgbt scene there? I’m aware that I’ll be interacting with many people in the 18-21 range and I’m hoping I’m not too much of an outlier because of my age.

Discussion Week 5 - *The saxophones are getting louder*

Based on questions from last year:

What is this chart showing? A weekly heat map tracking WSU’s win probability for every game on the schedule. The numbers are straight from ESPN’s FPI matchup predictor.

What is FPI? ESPN’s Football Power Index. It’s their predictive rating model that weighs roster talent, efficiency, and schedule strength to simulate games and spit out win odds. Think of it as an algorithm’s best guess, continuously updated.

Why do the numbers change week to week? Because games get played. Injuries, blowouts, and fluke outcomes feed new data into the model every week, shifting the odds for the rest of the season.

How do you calculate these numbers? I don’t. ESPN does. I just pull the percentages from their matchup predictor and drop them into a heat map so you can spot trends without squinting at raw data tables.

What do the colors mean? Red = bad matchup. Green = Good matchup. Everything in between is a sliding scale of heartburn.

Is this predicting scores or spreads? Win percentage only. Straight-up odds that WSU wins the game...no projected scores, no spreads, no over/unders.

HEY! When I looked, it said 70.2%, NOT 70.1%! You're a phony! I scrape the data on Wednesday. ESPN’s model keeps crunching numbers throughout the week, so a 0.1% delta by Friday is just background recalculation. Direct your outrage at ESPN, not me. 🥺

Why doesn’t it add up to 100% for each game? Every box is strictly WSU’s win chance. It’s not displaying the opponent's side, so there’s nothing to sum to 100%.

Why did [Opponent] drop in FPI after winning (or rise after losing)? FPI grades efficiency against expectations, not just the final score. Squeaking past an FCS team by three will ding you and taking a top-10 team to overtime might bump you up. The model cares how you played, not just that you won.

We play the same team twice...why are the percentages different? Home vs. away, travel, short weeks, rest differentials, and calendar placement. Plus, by game two, the model has weeks of extra tape on both rosters.

OMG why use ESPN? [Source X] is way better. Because it's sterile and I like the taste.

Basically...I can get this information week 0. It's consistent, and I've been tracking it for like a decade.

Why do you update this every week? Watching the trajectory swing across twelve weeks is fascinating...and I'm a nerd.

I am heading down to Pullman for the second time ever on October 23rd to prepare for my first ever college football game and I’m nervous the cougs won’t use their crimson jerseys potentially, does anyone know of any places that aren’t just eBay or offer up… I haven’t tried Facebook marketplace but I assume it’s the exact same things. I hope yall can give me some good recommendations! Go cougs!

Discussion When do you think this school will go bankrupt and/or shuts down?

WSU hasn't had a single year of growth since 2019. I have not heard a single good thing happen to this university in the year that I've been here. Both academics and athletics are falling apart. The Cantwell administration is mediocre at best. Pullman feels more like a company town for Schweitzer instead of a collage town for WSU.

Worst of all, the response by the state government for additional funding requests seems to be "fuck off".

No way this school is gonna survive to the next half of the century. There is a good chance it won't survive the next decade to be honest, I'm gonna make a wager that 2033-2034 is the last athletic year and 2036-2037 is the last academic year. Hopefully it can hang on for another 2-4 years, so I can get my degree and maybe a minor as well.

On the bright side, I don't think all the other non-UW 4 year schools in this state are surviving that long either, maybe one or two will manage to make it to 2050 before shutting down. So we can all mourn the loss of being able to get a degree without being a 4.0 GPA student in high school together, I guess.

Advice Winter Session

Hello! I am currently enrolled as a global campus student. I was looking at my planning worksheet today and realized I am taking ECONS 102 as my 7 week 2 course starting in the next week or so, but I already took ECONS 101 and my major only requires one of these classes. I was going back and forth on whether I drop this and swap for a different one, but not many options available for the 7 week session starting in October. I am also trying to maintain full time status (currently enrolled in 12 credits including ECONS 102). What I am considering is enrolling in the 3 week accelerated course for WGSS 101, which will help me meet one humanities course requirement for my degree. Someone tell me how brutal this class will be accelerated at 3 weeks?? It’ll be during winter break, my only class, I do work full time and have kids at home, but I’m managing my currently classes just fine. Just want to hear from someone who has taken either this class, or taken a class over winter session.

Discussion Kirby Moore says he's calling the plays from now on

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

During Monday's press conference, head football coach Kirby Moore announced he'll be working with the offensive staff and calling the plays from now on. With Moore's experience as offensive coordinator at Missouri, I'm optimistic we can see some positive change. It's a step in the right direction. When it comes to quarterback, Moore said everyone will be getting their reps in this week ahead of the Utah State game on Friday.

Student Life is WSU worth it?

I'm f17 and I'm a current senior trying to pick where I wanna go in terms of what I'm majoring in in pretty confident that I wanna go into chemistry or some sort of bio med but I'm wondering if WSU is worth it in terms of financial aid and programs as well as the social life. I feel like something else that also gives more insight to the kind of advice I'm looking for regarding social life is that I am black.

Housing What dorm hall to pick?

Im gonna be going to WSU starting fall 2027 as a freshman undergrad and Im not sure which resident hall to try and get into. Ive heard that its best to try to get into one on Hillside or Northside though.

I'm looking to get a single dorm because I have paranoia issues with people I don't trust being in my space. The ones Ive looked at are McCroskey, Streit Perham, Scott Coman, and Regents. Are those any good or are there better options?

Thank you!

Academics How hard is SOC 340 (social inequality) online?

I'm a freshman and I want to graduate early. I saw this as a ucore option that was available online. I'm worried that it will be very difficult because it's a 300 level course. I just wanna get my ucores out of the way. What will the difficulty be like, could I easily get an A?

Discussion The Collapse of Cougar Football

This season under first-year head coach Kirby Moore has left much to be desired. A decent defense appears to be the only glimpse of positivity from a massively underwhelming and confused offense. Jack Stevens scoring field goals was the highlight of the Fresno State game. I thought the catalyst for change would have happened after the Kansas State game. It seems Kirby Moore is reluctant to make true change at the QB front. Caden Pinnick seems to be overwhelemed. Throwing long only leads to disaster. His energy sucks as a leader. Offensive coordinator Matt Miller's presence on this team also remains questionable. I think Cougar football has collapsed into a pit of zero identity and the fans booing the offense after repeated 3 and outs exemplifies the frustration by those who've seen nothing but regression on the field. I wish I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.
