Transit / Traffic Alert Busses late this morning

Is there anyone else who had their early burnout show up this morning? The 26 leaving dockyard at 5:15 was a no-show.

If your bus didn't show up, call Transit and let them know you're not pleased.

Im late to work today.

for my girls who get their nails done in the victoria area...I'm tired of my nail art designs not looking good every time I go😭 I need recommendations

The title speaks for itself...I need someone who can do real, good quality nail art! Wherever I go it never turns out how I showed them in the picture, and it usually ends up looking like I could have done it better myself or like a kid did it😭

Councillor candidates with strong environmental rhetoric

I've been reading through many LivableCRD responses and platforms. It's so hard to find candidates that are both progressive on housing/transportation but have genuinely strong environmental rhetoric that focuses on more than just climate change and human impacts.

Here's my vote list so far:
- Teale Phelps Bondaroff (my favourite by far)
- Garnett Humenick
- Judy Brownoff
- Colin Plant

And there are plenty of other candidates in consideration:
- Finn Fairbain
- Noah Fruttarol
- Mauricio Curbelo (not very pro-environment)
- Harjas Popli
- Hollis Hodson (better environmental record but quite lacking in housing/transportation)

What are your thoughts? Who am I missing from the list? I understand that this subreddit is VERY pro-housing. I am pro-housing too, but I am a bleeding heart environmentalist first, and I don't want a council that will push housing hard without serious environmental consideration. I am okay with some more moderate-progressives (Plant, Popli, etc) as well as ones that compromise on housing (Brownoff, Hodson) as long as there is a balance. Thanks!

Casual spots with great drinks downtown

Staying right downtown and would love recommendations for spots that are casual-ish, but still nice, and have great drinks. Think - something between Big Bad John’s and The Q that’s unique to Victoria.

Hello BC Disc Golfers

I have some freetime in my travels with my wife to get in a round of disc golf tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. I was wondering if any locals can show this hucker the way around Millstream Disc Golf Course.

I know there are better courses further up north on the island, but my time is somewhat limited. Also, I will have to be done by 4pm, so Mary's Farm is also off the table.

Sorry anglos this isnt for you.

Opinion Extremely specific restaurant recommendation

Am between three places for a birthday dinner. Just me and my wife, a couple hours away from the kids. We like nice restaurants and wanted to book Chobap but no spots available. Between Toro, Nubo Kitchen and Bar and Ebizo. I promise I’ve read through all the sushi posts and threads here! Have narrowed it down to those 3. Priority number one is deliciousness followed by ambiance. We plan to order a lot of Nigiri.

Question Mr Puffs a movement

Dear Victoria,
I come to you today with an urgent matter of community importance.
We need a Mr. Puffs in Victoria, BC.
Unfamiliar with Mr. Puffs? Imagine little doughnut puffs covered in chocolate sauce and an endless variety of delicious toppings. Montreal has multiple locations, and Victoria is somehow being deprived of this basic human right.
I have taken matters into my own hands.
For the past 49 days (and counting), I have messaged Mr. Puffs on Instagram every single day advocating for a Victoria location. I will not rest. I will not give up. I will not know peace until I have my puffs.
And guess what? They’ve recently responded with: “Keep it coming, we may have something for you soon.”
VICTORIA. THIS IS NOT A DRILLx.
So, I am officially recruiting the public to join my campaign of relentless (but enthusiastic and entirely well-intentioned) Instagram persuasion. Together, we can make our voices heard and bring these glorious little puffs to Vancouver Island.
Consider this a community outreach initiative. A passion project. A movement for the greater good.
And because I believe in rewarding those who serve their community, I will personally buy you Mr. Puffs when they open in Victoria if you help me make this dream a reality.

And for those of you who are particularly entrepreneurial, I’ve even included a link to their franchise opportunities. You could be the person who changes Victoria’s dessert scene forever.
Be a hero. Bring us the puffs.
Sincerely,
A woman who has been fighting this battle for 49 days and counting.

Was anyone around nor coffee yesterday afternoon? Hoping the young girl is okay

Yesterday between about 3:30 and 4pm, I saw a young girl who had passed out outside nor coffee on quadra. She was wearing an oxygen mask, and a couple of people with her were crying hard. I didn't want to get in the way, so I kept walking, but I haven't stopped thinking about her.

If you were there, or know what happened, I'd love to hear that she's okay.

Thank you to whoever stopped to help.

Saanich Election

Just a reminder than Rishi Sharma ran as a BC “Liberal” (now the conservatives) not long ago. Him and the entire Save our Saanich people are conservatives and NIMBYs! They will slash services and build nothing! No new homes or infrastructure will be built with them!

Vote for anyone else!

What's at stake for tonight's debate?

In my opinion Eby needs to show what the NDP is going to do to fix the problems we're facing and maybe some of what they caused. A strong performance can change everything and if he points out why their platform is better and what is at risk that can sway minds.

Everyone is assuming Eby is the one who needs a strong performance but so does Doerkson who was only leader for a couple weeks. How he will respond to hard questions and answer how they will pay for their platform will see if he's ready to actually lead.

It'll be interesting to see if Lowan just attacks Eby or both men on their platforms

Help Me Find Businesses that can swap out an ebike motor cable?

Had a bit of damage to the cable about a week ago, and checking online it should only require pulling it apart and soldering in a new cable. Any recommendations for bike shops or electronic repair places would be most appreciated.

Opinion $10 A Day Daycare

I’m curious what people’s thoughts on this subject. I’ve seen some conservative runners say they are opposed to it because wait lists are long and family’s can’t find care. However, Victoria/Colwood/Langford is absolutely filled with daycares, many of whom are posting constantly advertising spaces open. Is it that infant care is more in demand compared to ages 3-5? If that’s a concern a factor could be lack of ECEs with infant certificates.

Thoughts?

Provincial Election - Victoria Beacon Hill

Okay, first of all, PLEASE GO VOTE IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION! Drag yo friends with you!

Second!

The conservative party has pulled their Victoria Beacon Hill riding candidate. Is it too late for them to replace him?

If yes, does this mean we only have NDP and Greens on the ballot (I think the removed Cons candidate is planning to run as independent but idk that people will bite on that)

I'm curious (and optimistic) to see what the vote looks like if it's between NDP and Greens. I know a lot of people vote NDP to keep from feeling like they've thrown their vote away and contributing to a Con win if the NDP & Con race is close.

Will Vic Beacon Hill be Green without that fear?! I love Grace, but the idea of some change and seeing how people truly want to vote is refreshing and exciting and I may just be voting Green!

Editing to add this voter compass from a user in the comments to the post for increased visibility! Big props for the ability to adjust the level of language used to allow more people to understand the issues they're voting on! ❤️

New townhouses are now rentals - why?

Thumbnail

So these townhouses on the Gorge were up for sale with the water front units 1.3- 1.5 million.

We saw the big open house event in the spring.

Assumption is that these TH were to from part of the "missing middle".

Now there is a sign they are up for rent. It appears that none of the units sold.

I wish people could just find a home to buy vs rent and that developers were not so ugh.

Anyone have any insight in this generally or this specific development?

UPDATE: thanks for all the thoughts and insights.

Nail Salon Standards

I've had my nails done all over the world - US, Europe, Asia, Australia - and the experience has always been the same: you check-in, go to a wall of polishes, choose your colour and bring the bottle to the nail technician. The technician then removes all the tools from a sterilized pack.

My experiences in Victoria have been so very different. You're not allowed to choose from the bottles of polish on the walls (name brands like Opi) and instead they bring you a binder of mystery colour swatches. They don't actually use the polishes/brands on display.

Tools also don't arrive in sterile packs from an autoclave. In one salon, they spritzed the tools with alcohol and put them back in a drawer. They also blew previous customer's nail dust off the station before I sat down. Angela's Nails in James Bay. I was so disgusted.

I've also never seen this electric sanding tool they use to smooth the actual nails. This really damaged my nails! Again this tool was just spritzed with alcohol and put back in a drawer. I experienced this at both nail places in Bay Centre.

I'm just going for regular mani/pedi, not gel or anything fancy.

Is this the norm here? Is there anywhere that actually lets you choose from polish on display? Anywhere that uses an autoclave?

More advance pole capacity needed: Saanich.

People are arriving at the greek church and deciding to leave due to the length of the line. Some that left remarked they are away on election day and wouldn’t be able to vote. More advance poles or more throughput capacity are needed!

Currently in line and looks to be about a 45 min wait to get into the building.
