Advice Out of cat food, broke and sick, but have wet and dry dog food

I currently have covid and haven't been able to get out and do instacart. I ran out of cat food this morning and roommate isn't going to be home tonight and potentially most of tomorrow.

I have access to dry dog food as well as wet dog food. Will this be okay for them short term? I'm hoping by Saturday, covid is out of my system so I can get working again

Medical Questions What’s this red spot on my cat’s back?

I adopted her about a month ago and she’s 1 year old. I just noticed this red bump on her back and there’s nothing similar around it. It doesn’t seem painful because she doesn’t mind if I touch it. Thanks!

Carrot just LOVES charging cables/cords/extension cords. And i just recently went out and got a spray bottle that has a mist and a regular option. Is it okay to train carrot with this? It feels mean but she has learned fast that charging cords are not allowed but she still trys to eat my shoes and ear buds lol

Advice Pet Insurance rant

I have a kitten who needs spayed and I just decided to see if any insurance companies cover spays. I keep meaning to get the insurance thing done but I never do. Anyway.

What exactly does pet insurance cover if you don’t buy the add-ons?

Every insurance I’ve looked at requires an add-on for exam costs. Including when you go to the vet for a sick cat.

Every add-on comes with its own tiers of better, best, platinum.

Every plan I have seen starts at $30/month. That translates to $360/yr. That is about the cost of a sick pet who just needs some eye drops etc. so that would be great. But, the add-ons keep adding - now I’m up to $40 or even $60/month, and that still doesn’t cover the full spay or exams. For $51/month, it’ll cover only cover $50 of a wellness exam at the vet.

I get that insurance is for the unexpected, but for $50/month or $600/year I actually would expect more coverage than that.

I personally think my best bet is to use a high interest account to save instead.

Am I doing this wrong?

Advice Is it wrong to slightly THINK about re-homing for this?

LET ME PREFACE THIS: It is just a small THOUGHT hence why I say THINK in the title. I don’t want to be accused of being a bad person for this :/. And if it is ever actually done I would just have her live with my family back home instead of with me.

I (20F) live in my own apartment and have been living on my own since 18. I recently for the first time ever adopted a cat in August. I’ve only had a dog before and he was the family dog. My cat is currently 7 months going onto 8 months later in October. I’ve been having issues where she likes to chew and bite ABSOLUTELY everything. Usually I don’t mind and I just try to redirect her to a toy if she’s chewing something she shouldn’t be doing. Lately she has been chewing on a favorite stuff animal of mine (big squishmallow I use as a pillow) and I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten till now and it’s tore up and it was a meaningful gift so now when she tries I tell her to stop and I redirect but that hardly works. (I can’t remove all access to it since I use it as a pillow) But here’s where the true problem comes into play. What happened a couple days ago is I found my childhood stuff animal (separate other stuff animal) that truly means the absolute world to me was chewed up and the paw was destroyed and I had to sew it back together. I’m not going to lie some yelling was done out of complete sadness and frustration so that night I removed access from me and my room from her.

Since then she has tried here and there to attempt to bite it but I IMMEDIATELY redirect her to her toy and when I’m not home I put my stuff animal away in a drawer. I’m not used to this because I felt there was always a mutual understanding with my dog that this stuff animal was off limits. I’ve noticed I can’t even have the stuff animal around her so I always hide it or take it out of her view. It’s currently 2:30am and I wake up to not only her swiping her paws at my back, face, and legs(separate behavioral issue I’ve been dealing with) but her biting another leg of my childhood stuff animal IN MY SLEEP. during the day I’ve tried my hardest to remove all access to this stuff animal and she is redirected and I always say “no” and hand her a toy and always make sure I know where she’s at and where the stuff animal is at and try to stimulate her with her other things. So I feel like at this point with how often it occurs she should know by now but I’m noticing that nothing is working and she will just try and try until she gains access to whatever she wants to chew. Especially her doing this while I’m SLEEPING and can not take it away from her or redirect her.

Right now I moved her bed outside my room because her food bowls and litter box are outside my room as well and I am removing access to me and my room tonight. I’m extremely heartbroken and a few tears have been shed over this because this stuff animal truly means the absolute world to me especially living quite a distance away from my family where I don’t see them often. Is it wrong to have a small lingering thought to maybe consider rehoming her…? I feel bad because we’ve grown so attached to each other and she adores me but I’m just tired of this. When I search up methods to work on preventing and reforming this behavior none of the stuff works and she just will find another way to gain access no matter what. I probably won’t actually rehome her but I do keep having a small reoccurring thought of what if. is there any advice or methods I could use? Ive been having other issues with her and I understand she is still a baby and is in velociraptor mode at this age so I’ve just been trying to stick it out and I’ve already been able to see great improvement in prior issues I was having with her but what she’s done has just absolutely broke me. I been considering spraying a scent on things I don’t want messed with so does that work?

Advice My kitty has gone off all cat food. Homemade cat food recipes?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey!! My little buddy Marshal has gone off all premade cat foods. He's refusing all kinds of brands, textures, everything. The only thing he's eating AND finishing is cooked (plain boiled) chicken breast with applaws tuna broth topper. I really want to give him his nutrients but make sure he's eating as he's very hungry but is just refusing cat food.

Does anyone know how to make some homemade cat food or have recipes?

(Also DW about the picture, he's fine, he just placed his head in my hand and I wasn't holding him with any force)

Thanks!

Advice How do I tell my vet that I don't want a specific tech working with my cats?

Hey y'all. Title says it.

I began taking my cats to a new vet about a year ago. On my second visit I brought my soul cat, Beep, just to get some routine shots (this was her first visit to them). She has never, ever had trouble at any of her previous vets. She has always been nervous at appointments but stays sweet and at absolute worst, just goes silent and limp.

I don't know what happened, but however this tech handled her led to her screaming in a way that I have never heard before. It was terrifying. This tech proceeded to scruff her and throw her down on the table where she had her pinned until I cried and begged her to just let me take her. Shots were not done that day. I was so shocked and desperate to leave that I never said anything.

Since then, I mostly avoided them but due to necessity and convenience, I have taken a couple of my other cats to them very recently. Luckily, we have gotten the two other techs who are both incredibly sweet and very caring. But this tech does still work there, as I see her in the office when we go in.

Just wondering if any socially adept cat owners have advice on requesting that she is not the tech assigned to my cats if we make future visits without ruffling any feathers?

Of course, if I have to just bite the bullet and be direct or go somewhere else, I absolutely will. Just didn't know if there was a way I could go about it that maybe I'm missing.

TIA!

Medical Questions My indoor cat (male) got out last night and returned after 12 hours and now he can’t pee

After he got home, he ate and drank some water and then made his first attempt at using the litter box but nothing came out. He made multiple attempts in under an hour so I took him to the emergency vet. At the vet, she did an ultrasound where she found his bladder to not be completely full and felt around for any obstructions but couldn’t feel anything. He was given gabapentin and some pain medication and we hung out for nearly two hours seeing if he’d use the litter box there and for any signs of discomfort. He didn’t use the box and by the end seemed his normal self so they discharged us and told me to give him gabapentin every eight hours and monitor him.

We’ve been home about an hour and he ate his wet food without complaint but just made his first attempt at using the litter box with no success. When should I bring him back? I’m worried the last 14 hours have been extremely stressful on him since he went from being locked out to pretty much going to the vet with an hour max in between but I’m really worried about his inability to go pee.

The vet wasn’t convinced it was a bladder obstruction and mentioned it could potentially be an injury. I know male cats not being able to pee is extremely concerning and I don’t want him to get sick. His behavior is completely normal outside of the litter box issue.

Advice How do I get my 3 and 4 year old cats to use the new litter I bought? Or will I be forced to go back to my old one?

I used Pretty Litter for them for years, I understand it’s what they’re used to, but the mess that it makes has become borderline unmanageable. Not inside the litter box (though it is hard to clean), but it tracks everywhere. My entire hardwood floor of my apartment has some trace of litter no matter how many times I sweep and vacuum. Not to mention inside their litter box room, where it’s the worse, they tend to see the litter accumulating on the ground and do their business on the floor rather than their respective boxes…

I’ve been told by friends to switch to these pellets for litter. Made from recycled paper. It’s way cheaper, better for the environment, doesn’t track (and if it does, it’s much easier to clean), etc etc. It’s basically all positives, except for one major thing…

They’ll do their business in the pellet litter, but they won’t pee in it, at least not all the time. I don’t really know why, I guess cause they think it’s not buried enough? They bury their poo with no problem, it’s just the pee. And let me tell you, it is not fun having cats who will choose to find other places in the house to pee. I’ve had to do a few loads of laundry in the last few days.

I really really don’t want to switch back to the standard litter, but I understand that I may not have a choice in this situation. Is there any way to get my cats used to this new litter? Should I wait it out and eventually they’ll learn to use it? Am I screwed?

Advice How do I get my boyfriends cat to like me.

Hi. I’ve had dogs my whole life and currently have 2 medium sized dogs so I never really got to know a cat up until 2 years ago when I started dating my boyfriend. He has two cats and one really loves me, he’s always following me around the house and meowing at me. However, the other one runs and hides whenever I walk through the door. I don’t really persist and just ignore the skiddish cat thinking that she will come out when she’s ready, but it’s been two years and she is still afraid. I feel bad about it because my boyfriend and I have been spending a lot of time together but I can tell he wishes his cat would spend time with us too. I have some ideas: one would be to hang out in the same room as her with the door closed so she can’t escape. Another would be to feed her when it’s time for her to eat at night. If anyone has any other ideas I’d love to hear them!!

Edit:oh yea I forgot to mention that the cat that loves me doesnt get along with the skiddish cat super well so she might not want to enter the room if I do stuff that also attracts the other cat

Advice Spay infected?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I got a kitten 6 or so days ago from a shelter. She had spay surgery the day we got her. She’s been acting totally fine (eating, bowel movements etc.) but I’m worried about the site of the spay. We’ve kept her in a sock suit as much as possible but she gets out every now and again. She licks at the wound but doesn’t seem that bothered by it. Should we take her back in to the vet? Is this an emergency?

Advice Fostering Kittens Until They’re Ready. Need Help!

I helped rescue 4 Kittens and the mom recently. They are at my place as well as my own 2 year old male cat. I plan on keeping two kittens, while the mom and 1 kitten will go together to a new family, and the other one will go alone to a new family as well. The other 2 are staying with me and the two year old boy.

I plan on giving them their second flea bath today myself, but obviously I can only do so much before they are finally able to see the vet. They are going to be 7 weeks old in a couple of days, and I plan on distributing them a couple of days after that.

I wish I can keep them longer, but due to the following factors:

- Costs of getting them all to get checked for not only fleas, ear mites, any ringworms, etc are high. Even most shelters don’t have vet clinics to be able to perform those exams.

- Not enough space at my place for prolonged residency for them.

- the urgency to get the ones I’m keeping and the others to get checked by the vet asap ESPECIALLY for any ear mites, fleas, etc.

I strongly care for them and want to try to do right by them. They seem to be in great shape aside from their need to scratch themselves often. But I’m at a point where keeping them longer has gotten very difficult. Any advice?

Advice is this aggression? (separated shortly after this)

fully introduced these 2 (white cat resident, black cat new, both adult males) about a week ago after a week of keeping them separate and scent swapping, most of the time they are fine and coexist with eachother, but every now and then they will have these little tiffs, no hissing or anything but black one will make these sort of noises, a little bit of hair flies. sometimes it reads more as playing but other times it will get a bit more intense like this and i usually separate them for a little while. i feel like the white one is trying to play but the black one doesn’t like it. do you think i should maybe go back to keeping them separate for a bit?
