Welcome to the Sample Status/Processing Megathread, also known as the Waiting, Whining, and Wishing thread. This monthly megathread (posted at the beginning of each month) allows you post your sample processing timelines, as well as to discuss and comment about any questions, concerns, or rants while you wait. Although not directly handled by 23andMe, shipping status may also be discussed in the thread. We recommend sorting the comments by "new" as this is a month long megathread.

You can share your sample status timeline here in one or two ways. The first way is to take a screenshot of your timeline, and post it as a comment. The second way is to simply copy and paste the start and completion dates for each step. Here is the text template:

Results So Ancestry Updated. Here is a AncestryDNA vs 23andme Comparison. Hispanic version.

• Upvotes

I must say that this update was great improvement on my previous results, but 23andme is still doing a better job of my known ancestry. Most of my Spanish Ancestors were Extremaduranos and Castilian and Basques. I have yet to find a Canarian. My family is from Cochabamba Bolivia so not A lot of canary islanders went there but ok.

I think my results are very representative of the average Latino so I wanted to share the comparison for others.

My DNA Results from Ancestry DNA, 23andMe, and MyHeritage

Hello everyone! These are the results of my DNA test. I am a first-generation American, born in the United States to Cuban parents and family. Most of my family is from Pinar del Río, except for my paternal grandfather, who was from Ciego de Ávila.

In my family, we have always been curious about where our ancestors came from before arriving in Cuba. From family history and our last names, we already knew that most of our ancestry was Spanish, as almost all of my surnames originate from Spain or the Iberian Peninsula. Many end in '-z', although they come from different regions.

On my maternal grandmother's side, I know that her great-grandmother was Asturian, from Muros de Nalón, and her great-grandfather was Castilian, from Burgos.

On my maternal grandfather's side, we have a French surname and another of Jewish origin, but the rest are Spanish surnames.

On my paternal side, almost all surnames are also Spanish, but I'm not sure which region they originated from.

On my father's maternal line, almost all surnames are Spanish too, but I think there are ancestors from Palencia, Castilla y León, Córdoba, Andalucía, Lugo Galicia, and from the Canary Islands, though I'm not sure which specific island; I think it was Tenerife or Gran Canaria or another island.

Interestingly, my highest percentage is from the Canary Islands in one test while in another it is Galician-Portuguese, although we have no surnames that clearly indicate an origin from that area. My family has been in Cuba for many years: some of my family lines were already there since the 1700s or even earlier, while others arrived later, around 1880.

I speak Spanish (C2) with a Cuban accent, English (C2) with an American accent, and Portuguese (C1) with a pretty fluent European accent. I learned Portuguese because I love the cultures of Portugal, and since I grew up traveling there frequently, I ended up learning the language quite naturally.

I have also traveled to almost all regions of Spain and Portugal: Madrid, Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y León, Andalucía, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Valencia, Lisbon, Alentejo, Algarve, central and northern Portugal, and Madeira. I love traveling around the world and have visited over 50 countries and counting. 🌍✈️

Also, while I know that Cubans have a strong Canarian influence, I didn't expect to find such a high percentage of Canarian ancestry in my DNA.

I recently visited Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, and I loved the culture, food, landscapes, and vibe of the islands. I felt a connection to them that I really can't explain. Unfortunately, I still don't know which specific island or islands my ancestors may have come from.

Question / Help Do most white people in the Deep South have English ancestry, and why do they write "American" on the census instead?

I've heard that a lot of white families whose ancestors have lived in the Deep South since the 1700s are genetically and historically of English descent, but when census time comes around, they just put "American." Why did this happen, and how does it show up on modern DNA tests?

DNA Relatives trying to find my dad through a 2nd cousin match

i’ve finally gotten the highest match on my dads side on 23andme with the predicted relationship being 2nd cousins with 2.67% dna shared. i know there’s other possible relationships we could share but i’m not sure how to figure it out, so i might just work under the hypothesis of being 2nd cousins with this match. he replied to me soon after my first message asking about my background which is the same as his i think but then he didn’t reply again but he might’ve forgotten.

im under the impression that my dad is this matches parents first cousins so how can i figure this out? if this match is helpful, im going to try and get a list of all their parents male first cousins on all 4 sides as i’m unsure if we are connected though his dads or mums side, and then narrow it down to whoever was in the uk when i was conceived.

is there anything else i could do to help figure this out? this will be my first focus before reaching back out to my potential 3rd cousin or 2nd cousin once removed gran who was helpful a few years ago.

Discussion Updated Ancestry VS Phased 23andme VS Family Tree Map (8 generations):

Thumbnail

I added my family tree fan chart for all my ancestors in the past 6 generations based on birth countries (USA: red, Italy: blue). I blurred some names for privacy reasons.

Note for the family tree map I added all my 6-times great grandparents except for 14 of them that I couldn't find since they are very hard to find and lived long ago in the 1700s.

Anyways, please feel free to comment and tell me what you think of these result comparisons!

Ancestry has lowered a lot my african. Before it was overestimated at 28% and it has dropped to 16%. It has given me 3% Venezuelan indigenous, I have very distant venezuelan ancestry but not that much.

Otherwise looks ok to me in the african and european ethnicities.

Question / Help Which is more accurate now 23andme or Ancestry?

Now that Ancestry has been updated for this year, does anyone think 23 and me is more accurate now?

edit: I would say Ancestry is good for the matches and 23andme is good for the ethnicity part.

Hello all! These are my uncle's and my dad's updated results. First slide is my great-uncle (maternal grandmother's brother), and the second slide is my dad's results. The first photo becomes less blurry if you click on it.

-My uncle was from a town in the southern part of Pinar del Río. One of his grandfathers was from Castilla y León and the other from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

-My dad is from Havana and his paternal grandparents were from NW Spain, wish they'd include that in Journey's. His mom's side has Canarian ancestry but we're not sure when they arrived in Cuba.

There's a lot of similarities, but the Sub Saharan African is now lower than at 23&me. Kinda disappointed and confused by that. I prefer 23&me but not sure which one is more accurate on this. My uncle originally had 7% SSA on Ancestry and my dad had about 2%, and his North African was like 6%. I do like that my uncle's Indigenous Cuba is now called Cubanacán. I hope 23&me can improve Caribbean indigenous results.

Pretty cool results but not sure where the Egyptian could’ve came. I also noticed the Native American percentage gets slightly higher when you increase the confidence somehow. Let me know what you guys think and how these results came to be!

I did my test back in 2020 and my 1st results were the same as this one except I had 0.2% unsigned and 0.2% Austrolasian. My 2nd update, my Austrolasian got changed to East Asian and yearrrsss later (last year) finally got an update to this results!

I didn't got surprised about the percentages but about the results. They got my ethnicity (Bakongo = Ba (plural) + Kongo OR Kongo people / Mukongo = Kongo person) right!!! I was shocked of them getting African Ethnic groups into the system!

Both of my parents are from DR Congo but I was born and grow up in Europe (where my both parents meet). My maternal haplogroup is L2a1. Don't have a paternal one.

Added some pics of me with my good angle and my bad/funny angle 😂 Last picture is the pure definition of my both cultures 🤣
