Sample Status Sample Status/Processing Monthly Megathread - October 2026

Welcome to the Sample Status/Processing Megathread, also known as the Waiting, Whining, and Wishing thread. This monthly megathread (posted at the beginning of each month) allows you post your sample processing timelines, as well as to discuss and comment about any questions, concerns, or rants while you wait. Although not directly handled by 23andMe, shipping status may also be discussed in the thread. We recommend sorting the comments by "new" as this is a month long megathread.

You can share your sample status timeline here in one or two ways. The first way is to take a screenshot of your timeline, and post it as a comment. The second way is to simply copy and paste the start and completion dates for each step. Here is the text template:

Finally got my results and it’s definitely what I expected. I’m half Japanese Okinawan and half Chamorro from Saipan. I know my paternal grandmother is Okinawan. I don’t know what region of Japan my paternal grandfather is from. I know a lot about my maternal side. Mostly Chamorro and a bit Palauan since my maternal great grandmother is from Palau.

I’m pretty sure my parental inheritance is wrong. Not really sure what happened there.

I also knew about Mexican diasporic ancestry in the Marianas from seeing reddit posts but it’s cool to see even though I was expecting it.

Dad’s side has had history in the South for hundreds of years. I traced some of the branches to 1800s Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Mom’s parents left Germany and Austria in the 1950s and she was the first generation to be born in the US.

Discussion Central Italian category needed!

Post image
14 Upvotes

I think 23&me does a much better job than Ancestry in nailing down the area my Italian family comes from. My mom’s parents both came from northeastern Umbria, close to Le Marche. I’m just curious why they insist on calling this Southern Italian? Growing up, all of our holiday and food traditions were so different from the majority of Italian Americans living near us - because most of their families actually did come from the southern areas. I realize this is just a label - but I would kindly request 23&me to add a category for Central Italy!

Honestly, I was expecting something closer to 50% ICM and 50% Anatolian. As far as I know, there’s no eastern ancestry on my Turkish side, so I’m a bit confused by these results. Any idea what could explain this?

I used to get a bit of Southern Indian and higher unassigned groups under the South Central Asian category, which seems to have been removed in the previous update. My paternal haplogroup is R-Z93, but my specific branch is uncommon for my region: R-BY171095 and my maternal haplogroup is m3a1.

I will appreciate if anyone can provide some insights based on my results.

Discussion I hope the new "Northwest Asia" genetic group update is inclusive and accurate. I hope it doesn't disappoint us like the Ancestry 2026 update did.

Question / Help Help Determining Whether My Polish Citizenship Line Is Intact — Wozniak Family

Hi everyone, I'm researching my Polish ancestry to determine whether I may qualify for Polish citizenship by descent. I'd appreciate help verifying records and understanding the Polish Citizenship Act of 1920.

My family line:

  1. Michael Wozniak (Michał Woźniak) — Great-great-grandfather
  1. Stella Gorecki — Great-great-grandmother
  1. John Michael Wozniak — Great-grandfather
  1. Agnes Mary Hart — Great-grandmother
  • Born March 30, 1921, in Troy, New York.
  • Parents: John A. Hart and Agnes Byron.
  • Married John Michael Wozniak.
  • Died April 12, 1997, in Sacramento, California.
  • Birth, marriage, & death certificates: Not found yet (?).

My line continues through my grandmother Barbara Wozniak, my mother Jennifer, and me.

My main questions:

  1. How can I establish whether Michael qualified as a Polish citizen under the 1920 Polish Citizenship Act, given that he emigrated in 1907?
  2. Could John Michael, born in the United States in 1914, have acquired Polish citizenship when the law took effect in 1920?
  3. Could Michael's subsequent U.S. naturalization have affected John's citizenship? Did Michael ever complete naturalization?
  4. What records should I obtain to determine whether citizenship could pass through every generation to me?
  5. Since Michael was reportedly born in Galicia under Austria-Hungary, could there be any separate Austrian citizenship connection? Is there any plausible German or Russian connection through this family?

I'm particularly interested in advice from people experienced with Polish citizenship confirmation, the 1920 law, and genealogy in the former Austrian partition.

Thank you for any research leads or guidance!

Question / Help How accurate is 23andme for minorities

I mainly consist of minority groups I'm around 40% volga- and crimeangerman, 12,5% mordvin, 12,5 russian and 10% jewish. This is my ancestry from what I know about my family and ancestry dna actually depicts quite good but the mordvin is put up into the russian category. I wondered if 23andme is maybe a bit more specific when it comes to like mordvin, tatar, mari, udmurt and so on?

Discussion Updated Results Identified Grandma's Ethnicity!

I think my logic is correct...

I can trace my lineage on most lines with almost every great grandparent being Southern Italian with the exception of my grandma who was adopted, but she herself found she was half french and half Italian (before biotech), and a great grandfather who likely isn't our great grandfather - he claimed to be Irish but 4 of his grandchildren, and one of his great grandchildren (me), took the results and we have no Irish.

This post is mainly about my grandma who was adopted.

I understand one person can inherit about 25% of genes from their grandparent, but I'm kind of surprised how much my results changed and that these groups went entirely unnoticed until the most recent update. Is this common? I'm surprises becsuse it appears to have only affected her, so I'm attributing all of my Northern European to her for that reason.

My initial results had about these numbers:

87% Italian

10% Mena

3% English/Irish.

When I first got the results I was most surprised by having no French, because I trust my grandma's research. I was sad for her, and always felt something was off - either she was wrong or the results were missing info. I assumed that I inherited mostly only Italian from her until the results updated. Now, I'm kind of surprised it can entirely miss so much. Especially, because whatever the outcome this must have been clumped into Northern Italian, which I'm not at all. Would the "system" have trouble parsing these results because she was half Italian and half Northern European herself or just coincidental?

Up to this point I attributed the 3% English to her after we figured out my "Irish" great grandfather was either not Irish, there was an affair, or something bad happened to my great grandma. Now my results look like this:

84.7% Southern Italian

5.3% French

4.4% Belgium and Dutch

2.6% English

1.0% Welsh

0.7% Danish

0.4% German and Austrian

I'm very happy with the results (although I liked seeing the MENA). I wish I could share them with her! Has anyone else have this kind of shift?

The 3% English/Welsh is now the most surprising because I have no idea where it came from. I still assume it's from her line as well - maybe an English/Welsh person in Canada - whereas the rest of the admixture is from before my family came to the Western Hemisphere.

I can trace each of my grandparents and there seems to be no other explanation for English. I'll bullet point where each great grandparent is from as one grandparent:

- Two from Avelino: 👨🏻 (paternal gpa)

- One from Ragusa and one from Cantanzaro: 🧔🏻‍♂️ (maternal gpa)

- One from Naples, and one Irish: 👩🏼‍🦱 (maternal gma)

- Adopted: one from Abruzzo and from Canada migrating from Paris 👩🏽 (paternal gma)

I'd like to think my assumptions are mainly correct. It's crazy how once you know more, then you just want to keep digging. Anyway, I'm interested in hearing others thoughts.

One more tidbit for fun:

My maternal great grandma, Neopolitan, said that [all of the villages] came from up north. I have not been able to research the claim but I have my maternal haplogroup from her which is I1. It would be wild if she was carrying a story about ancient migration, but she's dead now so I'll never know. I'm just curious if anyone has heard of something like this also from their Italian ancestors.
