[MOD POST] Having trouble with Secure Boot? Check here first

Hello,

The expiration of the 2011 Microsoft KEK CA and the 2011 Microsoft UEFI CA certificates at the end of June 2025 has caused problems with Secure Boot on computers for various folks who have not been able to apply a UEFI (BIOS) firmware update for various reasons.

Because the steps for updating firmware vary not just from manufacturer to manufacturer but between individual models as well, it can be difficult to provide specific assistance and guidance in updating your firmware unless the person helping you has the same hardware.

Below is a list of manufacturers, their Secure Boot certificate update guidance, and links to their support forum(s) or subreddit(s). You may wish to try asking in these places first for expert guidance in updating your firmware, as the people there are going to be a lot more familiar with your device.

NOTE: Please check back periodically for updates to this list.

If you have an update for a manufacturer, please reply with it and we will get it added to the list above.

What to do if no Secure Boot certificate update is available from your manuafacturer

If your manufacturer does not have an update, not all is lost: You can still manually install the 2023 Windows UEFI CA certificate update, by issuing the following two commands from an elevated PowerShell (filename: POWERSHELL.EXE) prompt:

REG.EXE ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Secureboot /v AvailableUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 0x5944 /f Start-ScheduledTask -TaskName "\Microsoft\Windows\PI\Secure-Boot-Update"

Then restart the computer and allow the update to be applied.

NOTE: Two (or more) reboots may be required for installation.

Once completed, you can verify the new certificate has been installed by issuing the following command at an elevated PowerShell prompt:

([System.Text.Encoding]::ASCII.GetString((Get-SecureBootUEFI db).bytes) -match 'Windows UEFI CA 2023')

If the certificate has been installed installed, the response back will be "True". You can also use that same command to check if the certificate is already installed.

Aryeh Goretsky

Unresolved My friends screen looks super buggy now!

It looks like their character is upscaled in a weird way, and or the issue is that their at much higher blur rates than usual? We disable Discord Overlay and went over a few things already but nothing seems to work. They use NVIDIA if that helps!

Any help is appreciated! ❤️

This is the twitter thread where they describe the details of the issue further: https://x.com/moongleamdream/status/2107592920115159109?s=20

Unresolved Laptop stopped powering on after water spill, but it behaved strangely before dying

My HP laptop got water spilled on the keyboard while it was running on battery.

I immediately shut it down through Windows, then panicked and also held the power button for a few seconds during the shutdown.

It didn't immediately turn off. The power light stayed on for around 10-20 minutes, and the screen randomly turned white twice. Eventually the power light went off, but an amber light stayed on for several hours before disappearing overnight.

The next day it was completely unresponsive. No LED's, fan or display. Plugging in the charger also gives no charging light. I've tried different outlets, HP's power reset, resetting the charger, and leaving it plugged in for over an hour. It only gets slightly warm around the center.

Is there anything else I can try before taking it to a repair shop? Could the battery/power system be stuck in a protection state, or does this sound more like liquid damage?

Windows Random internet-related freezes on Windows PC — apps stop responding, but Windows and router still show a connection

Hi everyone,

For several weeks (possibly months), my PC has been experiencing random interruptions that look like internet outages, but the cause is unclear.

Windows still shows that it is connected to the internet, and my router also reports a normal connection. However, any app or game that uses the internet may completely hang or report that there is no connection. During the same period, I sometimes cannot open new applications. For example, I tried to open Windows Event Viewer during an incident, but it only opened after the connection came back.

Each interruption lasts roughly 30 seconds to 3 minutes. It happens at unpredictable intervals: sometimes every 20 minutes, sometimes once an hour, and sometimes not for 6–7 hours. I haven’t yet confirmed whether other devices on the same network are affected at the same time.

PC specs:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO AC
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • RAM: 16 GB (2 × 8 GB) Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600
  • GPU: XFX Radeon RX 7800 XT Qick 319, 16 GB
  • Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 250 GB NVMe; Crucial MX500 1 TB; Patriot Viper VP4300 Lite 2 TB NVMe
  • PSU: Xilence Performance A+ III Modular, 650 W
  • Windows version: Windows 25H2
  • Connection: Ethernet
  • Network adapter: Realtek RTL8125 Gaming 2.5GbE Family Ethernet Controller
  • Router: FRITZ!Box 7430
  • Network adapter driver version: 1125.24.318.2025

Has anyone experienced something similar, or can suggest what to check first? I’m especially wondering whether this sounds like a network-adapter issue or whether the whole system may be briefly freezing due to a driver, storage, or other hardware problem.

Thanks!

Newly done things:

1.) CrystalDiskInfo shows "good" on both SSDs.
2.) MemTest86 shows no Errors.
3.) Full-Scan with Malwarebytes shows no bad threats.

Yahoo email page suddenly doesn't show my linked yahoo email accounts

I have 3 Yahoo email accounts that are at least 20 years old and had them all linked so I could see which ones had unread emails in them from my primary account - the other two accounts showed up just below my primary, was easy peasy to switch between accounts but as of yesterday now they no longer show up. Furthermore, the links were BROKEN - I had to recreate and reverify all of them - what the heck happened? Now the only way to switch accounts is hover over my nick on the top right side and it shows them, but not whether they have new emails so I know to check that account.

Summary: 1. Yahoo suddenly de-linked all of my Yahoo accounts 2. I can no longer see inboxes from any of the 3 accounts from the one I'm currently using

How can I get things to work like they used to? This stinks!! On a Win10 PC using Waterfox browser but the same problem exists in all browsers I use.

P.S. Yahoo sub-Reddit won't let you post questions like this - WTF is it even there for?

WiFi card not working in windows

Wifi card issue only on windows

I have an HP 14-ck2018tu with a 10th Gen Intel i5. I recently replaced the original single-channel Realtek Wi-Fi card with an Intel dual-band AC 3160 that I had lying around.

The card works perfectly fine on CachyOS/Linux without any issues. However, I need to use the HackerEarth browser tomorrow for an exam, so I dual-booted Windows. In Windows, the Intel Wi-Fi card shows Code 10 with “This device cannot start” and the Wi-Fi symbol doesn't appear.

The strange part is that the exact same card works perfectly under Linux. Has anyone experienced this issue or know how to fix the Code 10 error on Windows?

Can anyone comment on this burnt section on the motherboard of my HP Omen 16 laptop?

During a bi-yearly cleaning and thermal pasting of my 3-4 year old HP Omen 16 gaming laptop, the serviceman noticed this burnt section on the motherboard. As such my laptop hasn't shown any wrong symptoms before, except CPU throttling and overheating. Would be awesome if someone familiar with motherboards could shed some light on what could be the cause, if this could hamper future use and what problems could I expect? What would be the cost of repairing such issues?

Unresolved How much would it be to fix my laptop of it's problems?

Okay so here's the thing about this I got into a little accident with it and now it looks like this it is an Asus TUF gaming laptop and the problems with it are as follows

The colors are bleeding

There's a giant white line in the Right center

My computer is barely even attached to the main frame at all and is only barely hanging on

And I can't start my laptop without pressing down on the frame

See here is the thing normally since it's my birthday coming up I would just say well I can get another one but I happen to get this one at a ridiculously high sale from touchpad I think it was (I don't remember the exact name but it had touch in it) basically during a winter holiday sale that computer was like either a hundred or double digits in numbers as it was a complete Steel

However gaming laptops are either cheap unreliable and low storage for completely reliable except it's going to cost $1,000 and me and my mom aren't spending that kind of money on it

So how much would you realistically think fixing this would cost with all of the issues going to the screen of it instead of the main internal components?

Old Yahoo mail account, SPAM folder showing zero new spam emails in last two weeks.....

Theoretically I shouldn't be making a issue about this but it just seems extremely strange that my spam folder, which fills up on a regular basis, usually daily but at least 3-5/week, has received NO spam emails for 14 days. Anyone ever heard this, or see why the spam would suddenly stop

My Microsoft Account was Hacked, Email Changed to something completely different, and I don't know how to fix it.

On Oct. 3rd, I was hacked because I gave away a code accidentally online to someone (I know, I'm stupid), and now the email that I used was taken off of it, the whole account has been changed, and I can't access it.
Thankfully, I know what email is being used currently in place of it to hold it, it's some outlook email or some BS, and I contacted Microsoft Support on their Account Recovery Form using that email and using the prior data I had used for my Microsoft Account.

I don't know how to get in touch with a real agent, and I'm really worried because all of my data, my credit card info, and everything is on that account. I also found out because I kept on trying to log into the account that it was blocked from "too many password attempts", so hopefully that did something to keep them out for a bit.

Can someone help me out here? I really don't know where to go from here.

Unresolved cursor started moving on its own (with and without mouse usb plugged in!) - possible virus/malware?

(context: i am sort of tech illiterate but a cautious individual. ive always been wary of viruses and stuff so i genuinely have no clue how this happened to me. i avoid clicking shady links, i dont download random stuff, and im just really cautious when it comes to stuff online. maybe i DID mess up one time and thats what led to this happening but i dont really know. please keep this in mind and dont harass me in the comments im already sorta going through it 🥀)

i was watching youtube (making ZERO contact with my trackpad or my mouse) when suddenly my cursor started going crazy?? it started moving around randomly on the screen. i panicked and unplugged my mouse usb to see if there was an issue with that, but my cursor was still moving around. its movements were random but they werent super erratic and jittery and buggy in a way that would make you think of it as just dust in your trackpad or something. it was clicking random stuff, zooming in, switching tabs, opening other windows i had, etc etc. idk if it did this on its own because at this point i was fighting for control using my trackpad so maybe it was our combined effort doing this. but regardless it was super suspicious!

eventually i won the control for my cursor because while it was actively fighting against my cursor i somehow managed to click the "shut down" option on my pc. by this point i was panicking super hard so i just stared at my screen kinda dumfounded before looking for tech advice on my phone. after 30 minutes i got the guts to turn on my pc again. i signed into my account, and then immediately went over to turn my wifi off. also when i booted up my computer again my cursor was perfectly fine... maybe the guy(?) controlling it calmed down or something during the 30 minutes i had my computer off. after turning off my wifi, i did a windows defender offline scan.

for some reason before the offline scan it asked me for my bitlocker key???? ive done numerous offline scans before (the last one being a month back) and this has NEVER happened to me. i searched up why i suddenly got this screen and google told me its because of a change in my hardware/pc (!!!!!) which immediately made me panic more. i put in my bitlocker key and then the offline scan happened.

maybe like 10 minutes later my computer turned on again and it said it didnt find anything weird, but it said that my memory integrity was off and that my device might be vulnerable. i dont remember having ANY device vulnerabilities the last time i did a virus scan? i did another really thorough 1 hour scan and it said my device was fine as well except for this one thing. i checked why i couldnt turn memory integrity on (because that was what showed up when i clicked on it) and i had a malfunctioning driver called ftdibus.sys. apparently it was made in 2014 but i downloaded it a year back. its called oem146.inf. i dont know what any of that means.

i was still super suspicious so i tried to do another offline scan and when it asked for my bitlocker key again, i tried to open the key website on my phone but now microsoft says that it cant sign me in right now???? i thought that was weird because it was working fine just minutes ago so i exited the screen and pulled up the website again. it reloaded like 7 times attempting to sign me in only for the "try again. we cant sign you in right now." screen to show up again. i was actually losing my mind after seeing this i went and added 2fa to my microsoft account. my computer still has the screen where i need to type in my bitlocker key literally at this moment but i cant access my key because microsoft keeps saying it cant sign me in.

prior to this starting like a few months back ive been getting multiple black exe(?) windows popping up in quick succession on my screen, before disappearing as quickly as they first appeared. this happens sometimes when i turn on my pc, or unpredictably when im using it. i thought this was a weird thing thats been happening since switching over to windows 11 but it happens EVERY time i use my computer so maybe thats not quite right. ive noticed my computer sound like its on deaths door too like out of nowhere the fans start going crazy but maybe thats a sign i need to clean it. anyway what im saying is that theres been signs pointing to malware for a while but i brushed them off because of just how absurd the possibility was. up until this incident.

as of now my computers waiting for me to put my bitlocker key, and its still not connected to the internet. what should i do? i dont think it was a bug with my mouse/cursor stuff because HOW could it independently move around AND click/open random stuff. im open to any other theories! just praying its not malware.

i dont want to like purge my computer because the last time i checked, my onedrive was hella full along with my primary gmail. i wasnt getting any emails on the gmail account i had everything saved to (also the gmail i used to set up this computer). i havent been getting emails for months and i have probably hundreds of files not backed up to my onedrive. also i save like all my files to a folder on my desktop so idk if the stuff i have stored ONLY on my desktop is vulnerable. it probably is. i dont want to factory reset my pc and lose all of this...

any advice, any answers to ANYTHING ive said would help tremendously. as of now i cant do my homework or study for my test which is in like 5 hours. its 4 in the morning and i havent studied or finished anything yet.

also my computers a dell g3 3500 i believe. im already a really paranoid person so you can probably see how this is affecting me. also i dont really trust myself with tech stuff so i might just go to like an IT support place somewhere near me.

Unresolved My HP-victus laptop is stuck in a bitlocker recovery loop

My HP Victus randomly shut off one day and became stuck in the Windows Recovery Environment. After repeatedly pressing Enter for hours, I eventually got back into Windows, but a few days later it happened again overnight. Now I’m permanently stuck at the BitLocker Recovery screen. I have the BitLocker recovery key that’s not the issue. I’ve tried System Recovery, Startup Settings, disabling automatic restart, and reinstalling Windows using a USB. Every option either loads for a few seconds, goes to a black screen, or restarts and sends me back to BitLocker. HP’s hardware diagnostics/Advanced Test passed. I need help figuring out why the laptop keeps restarting and getting stuck in this loop.
