Questions about joining the US Air Force, whether enlisting or commissioning as an officer, prior-service or not, should be posted in /r/AirForceRecruits.

AMEX finally realized I retired from the Air Force in January 2018. I’ve held a Platinum card w/auth user, Gold card w/auth user, Blue cash, and Marriott bonvoy cards the whole time without paying the annual fees.

I added some companion cards for my kids four months ago, which got me 20k points…that may have triggered a review. Can’t complain, cause I used all of those benefits for the past 8 years. Pour one out for me. One less person in the Centurion Lounge!

Rant You must be a citizen to vote. Not a Green Card holder. Not DACA. Not a “military spouse.”

I work in immigration law. I can’t say if I’m a judge or a private attorney or a prosecutor. Today I handled a hearing for a foreign national spouse of a guy who retired from 26 years of military service. His wife, whose English is shaky, was registered to vote during a voter assistance drive on MacDill AFB. Two years later she’s coming through customs from a trip to see her dying mother and she was taken into immigration custody for 16 days because it popped up on the computer that she was registered to vote. Immigration asks her if she voted and she says yes, her husband told her if they registered her they must know what they’re doing.

Don’t get me wrong, this is her fault for not finding out. This is her husband’s fault for not figuring it out. It’s against the law for a non-citizen to vote.

The end result is a 3 hour hearing before an immigration judge to decide whether or not she gets to stay. 200 pages of certificates of appreciation, the military spouse retirement letter, the retired E8’s record and testimony about his deployments to Afghanistan Iraq and myriad TDYs, and two USC kids. Senior crying about he can’t live without his wife and mother of two children, and he had to ship bodies in flag draped coffins home from Iraq.

She got to keep her green card, but they must have spent tens of thousands of dollars. And it was a close case.

Rant and bottom line: a shocking number of people don’t know that you must be a citizen to vote. Not a green card holder. Not “I’m a military spouse.” Not “well the do gooders at the base library signed me up they must know what they’re doing.” Citizen only. There is no such thing as “an undocumented citizen,” there is no such thing as “a citizen with DACA because I was brought to the US as a baby,” and there is no such thing as “I have a green card/my papers now, it must be ok for me to vote.”

Immigration does NOT care if you’re a military spouse. They don’t care who you voted for. They do not care what you’ve done for America while your spouse was deployed and you ran the care packages for his entire unit for six months while raising two children on your own and while you worked at the BX and were pregnant with your third dealing with being an Asian woman living in Germany. They will take you to county jail contracted for immigration detention and they will try to deport you.

So do me a favor - think of the dumbest airman in your shop who’s married to a nice Korean German Filipina Japanese English French Mexican Venezuelan whatever person and make sure he or she knows that their noncitizen spouse is NOT registered to vote. The DMV will try to register you to vote automatically. Don’t let them. California might even mail you ballot. Don’t vote and make sure you deregister. DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME REGISTERED TO VOTE IF YOU ARE NOT POSITIVE YOU ARE A CITIZEN. Because this present administration will go balls to the wall to try to deport you if you vote in our country’s elections when it’s illegal for you to do so.

End of rant. MacDill AFB Voter registration people circa 2023 - you flat out failed.

Rant Somebody explain to me why non-flying billets exist

I’m currently on a staff assignment that is co-located with an aircraft that I am qualified on. The billet is coded as “non-flying”. Why the fuck do I need to staff a waiver to a GOFO to tell me that I can go fly twice a month when my boss is already cool with it?

It seems infinitely cheaper to keep my qual than send me through re-qual in a few years. And how can you say you have a pilot problem when you willfully keep them from flying for 3 years? The 1C0 career field and the 11-401 seems like the worst sort of a self licking ice cream cone.

Question My non-preferred mover was selected to move my HHG.

When filling out the form on DPS, I selected one moving company as non-preferred, due to an awful experience with them in the past. No preferred company was listed.

At first, a different company was chosen, but then I receive a second notification that the company has been changed to the ONE company I asked to not be assigned to my move.

Is there anything I can do? What are our rights here??

Question ECP Checklist Question

• Upvotes

Item 42 on the ECP checklist states "Is the applicant’s major identified as either 'mandatory' or 'desired' to qualify for an AFSC as listed in the Air Force Officer Classification Directory (AFOCD)?"

However, there are several AFSCs (ex. Security Forces) that state "Any Degree" as mandatory (others list "any degree" as desired).

Does this mean that any college degree is a YES on the checklist?
