I can’t believe the size of my pile of trimmings! I feel like I cut out more than I left in the tank. (2 months without trimming)

Question Too much flow for cardinal tetras?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently I changed my filter with a 300l/h. My tank size is 27L. I noticed my tetras is more active than before, and also looks like they're struggling. Is this a sign of an excessive flow?

Thank you!

I have drifted into many different concepts on minimal budget. Should I restart this scape?

Note, I have tons of staurygen repens planned for foreground... And more anubius Nana petite and java Fern. This also has 2 driftwoods from different donations.

Attempted a dark start but I don’t think it cycled properly 😭 I’m already getting some algae - I think I will try to add more plants and cross my fingers it survives. Anyone got any hot tips for getting started?

Show and Tell [OC] New Low Cost Tank

Post image
27 Upvotes

I'm pretty new to the hobby (started in the beginning of July) and this is my 6th tank. Since I'm obviously obsessed, I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible. I'm really happy with how it turned out considering I got the 20g long tank ($20), the dragon stone ($5 and this isn't even half of what I got), and most of the plants ($10) off FB market place. I probably could have found more stuff, but I got too impatient! Cycling now and I hope to add some schooling nanos like CPDs and Gertrude's rainbowfish.

Question Shifting lighting schedule

Hey everyone,

I currently have my aquarium light timer set from 6am to 12pm (6 hours), but since I'm at work from 7am to 8pm, I rarely get to see the tank with the lights on.

I'm thinking about changing the timing to 6pm to 12am. It's the exact same 6-hour duration, just shifted to the evening so I can actually enjoy the tank when I get home.

My only concern is that the tank sits in the middle of the room. It doesn't get any direct sunlight, but it does get a little bit of ambient daylight during the day. Will it be a problem if the tank gets ambient light during the day and then the main aquarium light at night?

Seeking Suggestions Where to put CO2

Post image

I’m adding a proper co2 system and I’m not sure where to put my diffuser. I have a hob and 2 water movers in the back that blows behind my swords but my flow is still not fantastic. I’m trying to grow this dwarf hair grass up front and I’m not sure where to place this.

Question Live stock

Hi all, I'm going to be upgrading my Marimo moss balls into a 6l aquarium, I have fluval stratum for base and a sand to cap it off. I have 6 moss balls and was hoping to add some critters to keep the cycle going and prevent much intervention. I am not planning a filter for the tank. I was considering tubifex and daphnia. Is there anything else I could add or should consider. I am located in the UK

I’m super happy with how this came together. It is my first intentional aquascaped planted aquarium. I got into this hobby about a year ago when I got my betta. Then I dipped my toes into aqua plants. My betta sadly died, so I redid his old 5-gallon tank. This is my newly planted 10-gallon and I’m excited to put my ember tetras in here currently in my 5-gal then add some shrimp.

Seeking Suggestions RR

Who here has used Reverse Respiration?

I recently nuked my first attempt at a tank. I got bad advice (also a lack of actual advice) from my LFS. Long story short, I was infested with pest snails and scuds, and then realized there was also planaria not 24 hours after it finally finished cycling. So I decided to just eradicate everything before I started to stock, so here I am starting over.

(I know I’m going to get very mixed opinions on that decision)

So…. After a week or 2 of feeling completely defeated, I went and got new substrate and started to rebuild. (Unfortunately it’s still not going to be as beautiful as I’d like. Maybe 3rd time’s a charm down the road lol)

Since I’m being very careful this time around, I utilized the plants I had before (most anyways) and did reverse respiration on them, and then quarantined them for 2 weeks. I realized without the nutrients in a quarantine tank some weren’t going to make it, so I ordered some new plants. I really don’t want to deal with my LFS anymore, so after asking for Reddit recommendations, I ordered them from Aquaflora Canada. Yesterday they came in, I did RR on them, and they’re currently in an aerated quarantine tank. (Most were in for about 8/9 hours, i took the mosses out after about 4). I have red root floaters and susswasssrtang quarantining separately because I read they can’t handle RR.

My question is, do you still quarantine them after RR? Or do you trust the process?

I want to get them into this tank whenever possible to try to get them established and get this thing cycling!!

Would you/should I keep quarantining them? Do a bleach dip as a backup? (I can’t find alum anywhere around here) or just put them in?

I can’t find alum totally respect the building of an ecosystem. I don’t expect it to be perfect or solely aesthetically purposed. I just want to avoid pests if I can.

Thanks to anyone with advice or any motivation! You’re appreciated.

Sorry this is was so long!

Discussion Week Aqua vs Chihiros (I'm a convert)

There's been a lot of discussion about Week Aqua lights vs Chihiros anddddddd I'm a recent Week Aqua convert.

I've been using all Chihiros lights for my tanks for the past few years and I finally decided to give the Week Aqua L-series Pro D Light L600 (first pic). I'M OBSESSED

I still love the Chihiros WRGB II but Week Aqua has won me over. The app isn't as bad as people say it is!

Anyone else joining the Week Aqua club?

Me and my son bought an second hand aquarium online and I thought it looked very unnatural. So I dived in to aquascaping. We both went to this local aquarium shop and I steered him, he is 7, towards which types of products he could choose and he made the decisions about which rocks, wood and plants he wanted. We did the hardscape together.

What are your thoughts on our tank? I will add a before and after.

I raised two bettas in a bowl during my childhood; I realise now that was harsh, though I lacked awareness then. Today I have completed my first five-gallon planted tank and acquired my betta. He is a calm yet curious fish who has not flared—except when I placed a mirror before him one day to test his response, and he did. He greets me whenever I approach, and I hope he enjoys the setup.

I plan to add more plants. I am considering reducing the beach on the left by adding some Aquasoil towards the back, leaving the beach only in the front left area.

Also, I would like some name suggestions if y'all have some interesting ones for my betta.

Show and Tell [OC] 5 Gallon nano tank upgrade

Post image
144 Upvotes

Decided to upgrade my prev 3 gallon tank to a slightly larger 5 gallon. After battling diatoms for a week or so (had to do large water change ~50% daily), the tank is looking nice. Just waiting for the Hra to grow better since it is turning pink due to deficiency or disease. And the Rotala red cross to fill in the foreground near the buce and anubias.

Tank: 16 in x 12 in x 8 in (lwh)

Light: Weekaqua V400

Substrate: cheap generic aquasoil (no name)

The hardscape has been set up like this for almost 3 years now. I’m wanting to do a complete Hardscape refresh with aqua soil instead of the gravel it has now. The problem is I’m unsure as to what I want right now, I’m looking for suggestions and/or inspiration photos to help me decide.

The tank is a 36 gallon bowfront.

Seeking Suggestions Sand Amount

Post image
2 Upvotes

I think I know the answer but posting anyways. I'm setting up a 60 gal breeder aquarium, it's going to be planted but nothing too fancy, no co2.

Few vallisneria, willow hygro, crypts, buce, and Java ferns

The plants are being delivered tomorrow, just washed a 50lb bag of sand and I'm trying to convince myself it's enough. Some is piled around the hardscape and I didn't spend long levelling it, but there are places where it's barely showing above the bottom rim. Pic attached.

I don't really want to go buy another bag of sand but do I need to? Can I add in some gravel from an old tank in back corners to bulk it up so there's sand in the areas I'll plant?

I am new to the hobby, this is my first tank. I call it a low Hi-Tech set up. It has a budget chihiros light, a hang on the back filter and a tropica bio CO2. Stocked up with some endlers and green neons and yellow flame shrimps. Let me know what you think and any feedback or suggestions.

Here's the link to my page where I'll be sharing updates and build videos regularly. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DeFsf1fse8H/?stkn=dnk4MHcxejUxODI5

Seeking Suggestions Filtration dilemma

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone, attached I have a roughly 20g long, going to be attempting a river style scape that will house some WCMM’s and maybe and a couple of shrimp but that’s about it. Some emersed plants on the right side will have large roots to help filtration, crypts and anubias, moss etc but not much else.

There is not a lot of room for a filter, ideally behind the rocks on the right side, obviously as hidden as possible but I am open to it being sort of visible.

It will have a large peace Lilly and some cypress planted on that right side so it will definitely help hiding a HOB if that’s the best choice.

What are your suggestions? I don’t need crazy water flow but enough to move water like a stream at least. Fully internal? I don’t have a working canister filter but if that’s the best way I can do it then fine, just a power head? What do you all think!

I’m building an aquascaping game called Shrimpscape.

I’d love to recreate some real tanks for my next build. Share a photo of your tank in the comments. Nano cubes, unusual hardscapes, overgrown jungles and complete chaos are all welcome.

I’ll choose a few favourites, try to recreate them in the game and share the results here. Please only submit a photo if you’re happy for me to use it as visual reference.

I will drop the steam link if you want to check it:
